Rejected Mate's Silent Vow Novel Cover

Rejected Mate's Silent Vow

In the fifth year of my marking bond with Alpha Jrue Garcia of the Shadow Moon Pack, he suddenly expressed his longing to become a father. A month later, I discovered I was pregnant. While organizing the Alpha’s quarters—a responsibility I, as Luna, took seriously—I stumbled upon his secret. Jrue had an unattainable love, a "white moonlight" figure. He planned to give our first child to her, Lilian Perry, who couldn’t have children. Everything was part of Jrue’s scheme. So, I went to the pack healer to arrange an abortion and watched as he continued dreaming about a blissful future. When the Moon Festival arrived—a sacred time for our kind to honor the Moon Goddess—he invited Lilian to join the pack gathering. That was when I tossed the abortion paperwork in front of him, leaving him completely shattered. --- “Please schedule an abortion for me, as soon as possible,” I said to the pack healer, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me.

Chapter 5

The procedure was over quicker than I had anticipated. Lying in the cold, sterile operating room with the bright lights of the pack clinic glaring down on me, I felt something leave my body. Even though the pack healer had administered a numbing potion, a sharp pain pierced through me—not just physical, but a deep, soul-rending ache that made my wolf whimper softly in the back of my mind. A single tear slid from the corner of my eye as I gazed into the blinding white light above.

I failed this child.

As I was wheeled out of the operating room, I saw Jrue ahead, his towering Alpha frame unmistakable even from a distance. His focus was entirely on Lilian, who stood beside him, her delicate scent of jasmine wafting through the air. He didn’t even notice his Luna being pushed past him.

“The Alpha and his mate are so striking together. I’ve seen her come in often for check-ups, and he’s always by her side,” one of the pack healers remarked, her voice tinged with admiration.

“I heard she can’t carry pups because of her health,” another whispered.

“But does it matter? The Alpha clearly adores her. It’s something to envy.”

I stared up at the ceiling, numb to the discussion about my mate and another woman. My heart felt like a stone in my chest, heavy and unyielding. Since I’d discovered I was pregnant, I’d attended every prenatal appointment alone. Jrue always had the excuse of being swamped with pack duties—meetings with the Betas, skirmishes with rogue wolves, or negotiations with neighboring packs. Now, it was obvious: it wasn’t about his responsibilities; he simply didn’t want to be there with me.

Jrue seemed to harbor resentment since our last encounter at the clinic, and after our unpleasant exchange, he hadn’t reached out. Meanwhile, Lilian had been admitted too, her room just down the hall from mine. Even being so close, during all my time in the clinic, Jrue hadn’t noticed I was there. Of course, with Lilian being his perfect ideal—his “white moonlight”—how could he see anyone else? Her presence was like a beacon, drawing him in with her grace and beauty, while I remained invisible in the shadow of her perfection.

As the healers wheeled me further away, I caught a glimpse of Lilian’s delicate hand resting on Jrue’s arm, her fingers brushing against the mark on his wrist—the mark that should have symbolized our bond, our promise. But now, it felt like a cruel joke, a reminder of how easily he’d turned his back on me.

“Lilian,” Jrue said, his voice low and tender, the kind of tone he’d never used with me. “Are you sure you’re feeling alright? You don’t have to push yourself.”

She smiled up at him, her eyes soft and adoring. “I’m fine, Alpha. You worry too much.”

The words cut deeper than any blade. He worried for her, while I had been left to face this alone. My wolf growled softly, a sound of both pain and defiance, but I silenced her. There was no point in fighting this anymore. The bond between us—once strong and unbreakable—had been shattered the moment he’d chosen her over me.

As I was wheeled into the recovery room, I closed my eyes, trying to block out the sound of their voices, the scent of her jasmine, and the overwhelming presence of his Alpha aura. But even in the silence, the weight of his betrayal pressed down on me, a constant reminder that I was no longer his Luna, no longer his mate. I was just a shadow, fading into the background of a story that no longer belonged to me.

The teacup slipped from my grandmother's trembling hands, shattering against the hardwood floor. The delicate china fragments scattered like snowflakes, but I barely noticed them. My eyes were fixed on her face—pale as moonlight, her lips tinged blue. "Grandma?" My voice cracked as I rushed to her side. "What's wrong?" She tried to answer, but instead of words, a rattling breath escaped her lungs. Her eyes widened in panic as she clutched at her chest. The familiar scent of her lavender perfume mixed with something sharper—fear. "Naomi..." she finally managed, her voice barely audible. "Can't... breathe..." I dropped to my knees beside her chair, my hands hovering helplessly over her frail body.

The sound of the boat's engine cut through the morning mist as I stood on the dock, my hands clasped neatly in front of me. Today was supposed to be a celebration—Xavier's Coming-of-Age ceremony—but my stomach twisted with dread. Two years of careful cultivation were at stake, and I couldn't afford any disruptions. I smoothed down my simple white lab coat, a stark contrast to the expensive designer clothes Xavier preferred. The boat docked with a gentle bump against the wooden pier, and I straightened my spine, preparing myself for another day of playing the meek, wolfless healer. "Welcome to Moonflower Island," I said softly as Xavier stepped onto the dock, his tall frame casting a shadow over me. "I've prepared the facilities for your celebration." Xavier didn't even glance my way. His attention was fixed on Makayla, who emerged from the boat's cabin like a vision in a flowing sundress that highlighted her curves. He wrapped his arm possessively around her waist, pulling her close. "Finally," he said, his voice carrying across the water.

After a year of carefully trying to conceive, I finally discovered I was pregnant. I had planned to surprise my mate, but he arrived at the bistro where we were supposed to celebrate with his “special friend,” the woman who was always in the back of his mind. In the chaos that followed, an oblivious Delta warrior pushed me to the ground. Seeing the bright red blood made my head spin, and, just like that, I lost the pup. When the anesthesia wore off, the first thing I saw was a post by his beloved, showing intimate photos of the two of them. In the pictures, she sat half-naked, nestled in Alpha Henrik Freeman's lap, sharing a passionate kiss. “We planned this toast together, but I didn’t expect you'd go and share it with someone else!” I commented bitterly, “Quite bold, aren’t you? Not worried about the scandal?” With that, I spread the rejection papers all over our pack house. Yesterday marked a full year since Henrik and I started trying to conceive, and I found out I was pregnant. Today, the pup is gone.
