Chapter 3

The ledgers spread across Daemon's mahogany desk like accusations waiting to be proven. I perched on the edge of his chair's armrest, close enough that my thigh brushed against his shoulder as he traced columns of numbers with one long finger. The intimacy of the position wasn't lost on either of us—I could feel the heat radiating from his body, could smell the faint scent of his morning cologne mixed with something darker, more primal.

"These discrepancies are... interesting," Daemon murmured, his voice carrying that low rumble that always made my pulse quicken. "Your son-in-law appears to have a rather creative approach to bookkeeping."

I leaned closer, letting my hair fall forward to brush against his neck as I pointed to a particular entry. "That shipment there—herbs from the eastern territories. The quantity doesn't match the payment records from three months ago."

His body went still beneath me, and I felt the shift in his attention like a physical thing. "How would you know that?"

"Because my family used to supply those same routes." The words tasted bitter, but I kept my voice steady. "Before Marcus decided we were... inconvenient."

Daemon's hand found my wrist, his thumb tracing circles against my pulse point. "Keep talking."

"The eastern herb traders are notorious for their precision. They never round numbers, never estimate. Every gram is accounted for." I pointed to another discrepancy. "But look here—Marcus's records show round numbers. Suspiciously round."

"Suggesting?"

"That he's either skimming from the shipments or inflating the costs. Possibly both." I straightened, putting deliberate distance between us. "Of course, these could just be clerical errors. Marcus has always been more of a... hands-on leader than a detail-oriented administrator."

The way Daemon's eyes darkened told me he'd caught the subtle barb. Good. Let him wonder about Marcus's competence. Let the seeds of doubt take root.

"I think," he said slowly, "I need to have a conversation with my son-in-law about his business practices."

I slid off the armrest, smoothing my skirts with practiced innocence. "I'm sure it's nothing serious, Your Majesty. After all, what do I know about running a pack's finances?"

His smile was sharp as winter steel. "Indeed. What could a simple Omega possibly understand about such complex matters?"

The mockery in his tone made heat flare in my chest, but I kept my expression serene. We both knew I was anything but simple.

Three days later, I found myself standing in the servants' corridor outside the palace kitchens, watching Elara—the elderly Omega who'd served the royal family for decades—as she folded linens with methodical precision. Her graying hair was pulled back in a severe bun, but her eyes held a warmth that reminded me painfully of my grandmother.

"Miss Aria," she said without looking up, "you've been asking a lot of questions lately."

"Have I?" I moved closer, helping her fold a particularly large tablecloth. "I suppose I'm just curious about palace life. It's all so different from what I'm used to."

Elara's hands stilled. "Your grandmother, Sage Morwyn, once saved my youngest daughter from fever sickness. Refused payment, said healing was the Goddess's work, not hers."

My breath caught. "You knew my grandmother?"

"Knew her, respected her, mourned her passing." Elara's eyes met mine, and I saw understanding there. "Just as I mourned what happened to her family. Terrible thing, those accusations. Sage Morwyn would have died before selling contaminated herbs."

"She did die," I whispered. "Of heartbreak, when she saw what they did to us."

Elara's weathered hand covered mine. "Then perhaps it's time someone set things right. The King has... particular interests. Places he goes when the moon is dark and the palace sleeps."

My pulse quickened. "What kind of places?"

"The kind where power takes different forms. Where control is... negotiated." She pressed a small card into my palm. "The Obsidian Rose. Tomorrow night. Tell them Madame Cordelia sent you."

I stared at the elegant black card, its silver lettering catching the lamplight. "Elara, I—"

"Your grandmother saved my child. Let me help save yours."

The Obsidian Rose existed in a world I'd only heard whispered about in the darkest corners of taverns. Located beneath an exclusive art gallery, the club's entrance was hidden behind a bookshelf that swung open only for those who knew the right words. The password Elara had given me—"Shadows dance at midnight"—felt foreign on my tongue, but the doorman's knowing smile told me I'd spoken correctly.

The interior was a study in elegant darkness. Black silk draped the walls, and crystal chandeliers cast intimate pools of light across scenes that would have scandalized half the kingdom. Men and women moved through the space with predatory grace, their expensive clothing doing little to hide the raw hunger in their eyes.

I'd chosen my outfit carefully—a deep burgundy corset that emphasized my curves while maintaining an air of mystery, paired with a flowing black skirt that whispered against my legs as I walked. The ensemble had cost me the last of my savings, but it was worth it to see the appreciative glances that followed my movement through the crowd.

"Well, well. Fresh meat." The voice belonged to a tall Alpha with silver threading his dark hair and scars across his knuckles that spoke of violence barely contained. "I don't recognize you, little Omega. First time playing in the deep end?"

I tilted my head, letting a slow smile curve my lips. "Is it that obvious?"

"The way you're looking around like a deer in headlights? Absolutely." He stepped closer, his scent—leather and aggression—washing over me. "Lucky for you, I enjoy breaking in newcomers. Why don't you come with me, and I'll show you how things work here?"

"How generous." I let my fingers trail along his forearm, feeling the way his muscles tensed beneath my touch. "But I think I'd prefer to find my own way. The anticipation is half the fun, don't you think?"

His eyes darkened with frustrated desire, but before he could respond, another voice cut through the tension.

"Marcus, I see you're harassing the new arrivals again."

I turned to see a woman approaching—tall, elegant, with silver hair piled high and eyes like chips of ice. Her black leather dress fit her like a second skin, and the way the Alpha immediately stepped back told me she commanded respect here.

"Madame Cordelia," Marcus muttered, his earlier confidence evaporating. "I was just—"

"Being your usual charming self, I'm sure." Her gaze shifted to me, and I felt weighed, measured, evaluated. "And you must be Elara's recommendation. She said you had... potential."

"I hope so," I replied, meeting her stare steadily. "I'd hate to disappoint."

"Oh, I doubt you will." Her smile was sharp as a blade. "Tell me, dear, what brings you to our little sanctuary?"

I let my gaze drift across the room, taking in the carefully orchestrated scenes of power and submission, until it landed on a familiar figure in the far corner. Daemon sat in a high-backed chair like a throne, his dark eyes surveying the room with the casual authority of a man who owned everything he saw.

"I'm looking for a challenge," I said softly, never taking my eyes off the Lycan King. "Something that will test my limits."

Madame Cordelia followed my gaze and laughed—a sound like silver bells and broken glass. "Oh, my dear girl. You aim high, don't you?"

"Always." I straightened my shoulders, feeling the weight of destiny settling around me like a cloak. "After all, what's the point of playing if you're not willing to risk everything?"

Across the room, Daemon's eyes found mine, and the air between us crackled with electric possibility. His slow smile was an invitation and a warning all at once.

Game on.
