Chapter 1

I felt it before I saw it—that terrible shift in my son's aura that sent ice through my veins. One moment Leo was sitting up in his hospital bed, laughing at the comic book I'd brought him, and the next his small body convulsed, his breaths coming in desperate, wheezing gasps.

"Leo!" I reached for him as he collapsed back against the pillows, his skin turning an ashen gray. "Someone help! My son needs help!"

My hands trembled as I pressed the emergency call button repeatedly, my wolf Lily howling in panic inside my mind. The Silver Creek Pack's medical wing had been our home for the past three days as Leo's mysterious symptoms worsened, but nothing had prepared me for this violent turn.

Healer Davis rushed in, his normally calm demeanor replaced with tight-lipped concern as he checked Leo's vitals. "His shifting channels are completely blocked," he muttered, more to himself than to me. "The blood curse is progressing faster than we anticipated."

"What does that mean?" I demanded, gripping Leo's hand. His fingers felt ice-cold against mine, his labored breathing filling the sterile room. "What's happening to my son?"

"His wolf can't emerge to help heal him," Davis explained, his voice grave. "The curse is preventing the shift that might save him."

I knew then what we needed. "Jonathan's serum. We need to give him the experimental treatment."

Davis hesitated, avoiding my eyes. "I'll call the Alpha immediately."

The minutes stretched like hours as I whispered reassurances to Leo, stroking his dark hair away from his forehead. My beautiful boy, only twelve years old, showing such early signs of Alpha potential. His inner wolf had awakened just months ago—far earlier than normal, a sign of his powerful bloodline. Now that same gift was being strangled by this cruel curse.

"Mom," Leo whispered, his voice barely audible. "It hurts. I can't feel Max anymore." Max, his wolf. The name he'd chosen with such pride.

"Shh, baby. Dad's coming. He'll make it better." I pressed my lips to his forehead, tasting the salt of my own tears that had fallen onto his skin.

The door swung open, and relief flooded through me as Jonathan strode in, his powerful Alpha aura filling the room. But that relief froze solid in my chest when I saw Amanda Sterling following close behind him, her son Ethan in a wheelchair.

"Jonathan," I said, rising to my feet. "Leo needs the serum. Now."

Something in my mate's expression made my wolf growl a warning. His eyes, usually warm amber when they looked at our son, seemed distant, clinical.

"Rebecca," he said, using my full name rather than the affectionate 'Becca' of our twenty years together. "We need to discuss this rationally."

"Rationally?" My voice cracked. "Our son is dying!"

Jonathan's jaw tightened, his Alpha authority radiating from him in waves that pressed against my skin. "The serum is experimental. We have only one viable dose."

"Then use it on Leo!" I pleaded, gesturing to our son whose breathing was becoming more labored by the second.

"I can't do that." His voice turned cold, using that Alpha tone that had never before been directed at me. "The serum must go to the candidate with the highest chance of survival and the purest bloodline potential."

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet. "What are you saying?"

Jonathan turned to Amanda, who stepped forward with her son. I noticed for the first time the vial in Jonathan's hand—the precious serum that could save one life.

"Ethan's condition is responding better to preliminary treatments," Jonathan stated flatly. "His bloodline shows no signs of the genetic anomaly that might be complicating Leo's case."

"Genetic anomaly?" I whispered, disbelieving. "He's your son!"

"And as Alpha, I must make decisions for the good of the pack, not just my family." He turned away from me, kneeling beside Ethan's wheelchair. "Bloodline purity must be maintained."

As Jonathan administered the serum to Amanda's son, I felt something fundamental crack inside me—the mate bond that had been my anchor for twenty years splintering like ice under too much weight.

I turned back to Leo, gathering his failing body in my arms. His eyes, so like mine, found my face.

"Why doesn't Alpha Daddy want to help me?" he whispered through our parent-child bond, his mental voice already fading.

I had no answer as I felt his last breath whisper against my neck, his small body going still in my arms. My wolf's anguished howl tore through my mind, drowning out everything except the terrible knowledge that my mate—the man I had given my life and love to for twenty years—had just chosen another woman's child over our own.

And in that moment, as Leo's spirit left us, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again.
