Chapter 3

The forgotten Italian restaurant Diana had chosen sat tucked between a defunct dry cleaner and a shop selling discount electronics, its faded awning barely visible from the street. Inside, checkered tablecloths and the lingering scent of garlic created an atmosphere of deliberate anonymity—the kind of place where conversations disappeared into the ambient noise of clinking silverware and muted conversations.

Diana was already seated when I arrived, her sharp eyes cataloging every detail of my appearance as I approached. She'd aged well in the five years since I'd last seen her—still lean and predatory, her graying hair pulled back in a severe bun that emphasized the calculating intelligence in her gaze.

"You look different," she said without preamble, gesturing for me to sit.

"I am different," I replied, settling into the worn leather booth across from her.

She studied me for a long moment, taking in the tailored lines of my clothing, the confident set of my shoulders, the absence of the desperate edge that had defined our last meeting. "Good. You'll need to be."

A manila folder sat on the table between us, thick with documents and photographs. Diana's fingers drummed against its surface—a nervous habit I remembered from our operational days.

"Rachel Gibson has been very busy," she said, sliding the folder toward me. "Though she goes by Victoria Crane now."

I opened the folder, my enhanced vision quickly processing the financial reports and surveillance photographs scattered inside. Victoria's face stared back at me from multiple angles—entering board meetings, dining with key investors, her arm linked possessively through my father's at various social functions.

"Three years," Diana continued, her voice clinical. "Three years of systematically positioning herself as indispensable while quietly undermining every ethical practice your family's company once maintained."

The financial documents painted a damning picture. Contracts with shell companies, donations to questionable charities, investment decisions that benefited Victoria's personal portfolio while draining company resources. She'd been thorough, methodical—and completely unchallenged.

"Your father's judgment has deteriorated significantly," Diana said, leaning back in her chair. "Victoria has him completely under her influence. He sees what she wants him to see, hears what she wants him to hear."

I flipped to the next section, my jaw tightening as I read. "And Ivy?"

"Ah, yes. Your half-sister's management of the Blackwood Foundation." Diana's smile was razor-sharp. "Catastrophic doesn't begin to cover it."

The reports were devastating. Three major humanitarian projects had collapsed under Ivy's oversight, their failures covered up by falsified progress reports and creative accounting. Millions of dollars had vanished into administrative costs and consultant fees, leaving desperate communities with nothing but broken promises.

"The company is more vulnerable than anyone realizes," Diana said quietly. "Victoria's been bleeding it dry while Ivy's incompetence destroys its reputation. They're both so focused on maintaining their facades that they haven't noticed the foundation crumbling beneath them."

I closed the folder, my mind already calculating possibilities, strategies, countermoves. The scope of their damage was breathtaking, but it also represented opportunity. Companies in crisis could be rebuilt, restructured, reclaimed—if one knew how to exploit the right pressure points.

Diana leaned forward, her voice dropping to barely above a whisper. "Take it back, Sera. All of it."

The words hung between us like a challenge, a dare, a recognition of what we both knew I was capable of. I met her gaze steadily, seeing my own determination reflected in her calculating eyes.

"I know," I said simply. "It's the only path forward."

We parted ways outside the restaurant, Diana disappearing into the evening crowd with the practiced ease of someone who'd spent decades avoiding notice. I walked several blocks before hailing a taxi, my mind processing everything I'd learned while the city lights blurred past the windows.

The gallery opening was already in full swing when I arrived, the converted warehouse space filled with the carefully curated chaos of the art world. Marcus Chen spotted me immediately, weaving through the crowd with the fluid grace that had made him one of the city's most successful gallery owners.

"Carol," he said, using the name I'd given him during my months working here. "You look radiant tonight."

I accepted the champagne flute he offered, noting how his eyes lingered on the expensive cut of my dress, the quality of my jewelry. Marcus had always been perceptive—it was what made him dangerous and useful in equal measure.

"Thank you for the invitation," I said, allowing him to guide me toward a particularly striking abstract piece. "Your exhibitions are always... illuminating."

"Speaking of illuminating," Marcus said, his tone carefully casual, "I heard about Dominic Kane becoming Alpha. Silver Moon Peak is quite the rising star in supernatural circles."

I kept my expression neutral, taking a delicate sip of champagne. "Is that so?"

"Oh yes. He's been very active in the social circuit. Quite focused on his image as the newly single Alpha, from what I understand." Marcus's smile held just a hint of malice. "Building alliances, making connections. Very... strategic."

The champagne turned bitter on my tongue, but I maintained my composure. "How ambitious of him."

"Indeed." Marcus studied my face with the intensity he usually reserved for evaluating potential masterpieces. "Though I suspect such ambition often comes with a price."

I set down my champagne flute, the crystal ringing softly against the marble surface. "He'll regret it."

Marcus raised an eyebrow, his expression shifting from casual interest to genuine curiosity. "Will he?"

I met his gaze directly, letting him see the steel beneath my polished exterior. "Yes. He will."

The certainty in my voice seemed to surprise him, and I watched as he reassessed everything he thought he knew about the woman who'd once organized his storage room and answered his phones. The transformation from Carol the assistant to whoever I was becoming was written in every line of my posture, every calculated word.

I was making my way toward the exit when my phone buzzed against my clutch. Diana's encrypted message was brief but urgent: "Emergency. Dominic Kane has made contact with your sister. He doesn't know who she is."

I paused in the gallery's doorway, the implications crashing over me like ice water. Dominic was already moving, already positioning himself for his next strategic alliance. And he'd chosen Ivy—beautiful, naive Ivy who had no idea what kind of predator was circling her.

The game had just become infinitely more complicated.

The weekly pack meeting droned on as I sat in my usual spot at the far corner of the grand hall, invisible as always. Eight years of being Alexander's mate, yet I might as well have been a ghost haunting the Blackwood Pack house. My fingers absently traced the silvery scars on my palms—permanent reminders of the healing ritual that had bound us together and saved his life. I kept my eyes down, focusing on the intricate patterns of the wooden floor rather than the cold, dismissive glances from Eleonora Blackwood across the room. The former Luna never missed an opportunity to remind me of my place—a placeholder, an inconvenience, never truly worthy of standing beside her son. 'So we're agreed on the territory negotiations with the Silver Creek Pack?' Alexander's commanding voice filled the room, his Alpha aura pulsing with authority that made the wolves around him instinctively lower their gazes. All except me. The mate bond had granted me that small mercy at least—immunity to his Alpha tone. Sometimes I wondered if that was why he resented me so deeply. 'Yes, Alpha.

I felt the familiar warmth of my wolf, Lyra, stirring inside me as I placed a protective hand over my swollen belly. Five months pregnant with James's heir—our miracle, our future. The pack house was quiet tonight, most wolves already retired to their quarters after the full moon celebration. "Something's wrong," Lyra whispered in my mind, her anxiety rippling through our shared consciousness. I frowned, setting down the herbal tea I'd been sipping. "What is it?" "Our car... someone's taken our car." I moved to the window of our Alpha suite, peering out into the moonlit courtyard. The space where my silver SUV should have been parked was empty. A chill ran down my spine that had nothing to do with the night air. "James?" I called through our mate bond, reaching for the comforting presence of my Alpha.

Sabrina left on a Tuesday night. She didn't say goodbye. She didn't leave an explanation, not really — just a folded note on top of her packed suitcase that said she refused to be auctioned off like livestock. The handwriting was neat and unhurried, like she'd had time to think about it. Like she'd been planning it for a while. I found out the same way I found out most things in our house. I was summoned. "Kitchen. Now." My mother's voice through the door, flat and clipped. I came downstairs in my socks to find both my parents standing at the kitchen island.

The scent of vanilla cake and blue frosting filled the dining room, but it couldn't mask the underlying aroma of anxiety coming off my five-year-old son. "Do you think he's coming, Mommy?" Jonas asked, bouncing on the balls of his feet. His golden eyes, so much like his grandfather's, darted between the 'Happy 5th Birthday' banner I’d hand-painted and the front door. "Of course, baby," I lied, smoothing his unruly hair. "It's a big day. The first shift milestone. Daddy wouldn't miss it." For five years, I had been the invisible woman of the Silverclaw Pack. Unmarked. Unacknowledged. I ran the pack's finances, organized the patrols, and managed the logistics, all while Alpha Creed Foster played the role of the tortured leader suffering from "Bond Hesitancy." I swallowed the humiliation daily, telling myself it was for the pack, for Creed, and most importantly, for Jonas.

The rumors of my divorce from Ryland Payne had circulated for two years. Over those two years, he had paraded around with the secretary whose husband had once saved his life, appearing at every event and trampling my dignity underfoot. I had never uttered a single word of complaint. That changed on the anniversary of our son's death, when he showed up at the memorial art exhibition I had organized for our boy, with that woman and her child in tow. The necklace around that woman's neck featured the longevity locket I had personally designed for my son. I lost all control and smashed the exhibition, then rushed forward to snatch it back, only for Ryland to block me desperately. I slapped him across the face in front of everyone, and he shoved me down onto the shattered picture frames in retaliation. The next day, the entire internet branded me as the deranged woman. "Two years ago, if she hadn't lost her mind and gone speeding through the rainstorm, the little heir of the Payne family would never have died on the spot!" "Exactly, she killed her own son through her recklessness, and now she wants to hurt her husband's benefactor. What a venomous witch." I turned off my phone, and my gaze turned to ice, inch by inch. Ryland Payne, this time, I decided to leave you for good.
