Rejected By The Alpha, Crowned By The Pack
Chapter 2
Bonnie knew I was struggling, and when she found out how Melina Reynolds, Orlando’s beta, was treating me, she was livid. At the pack gathering, she confronted Melina, her voice sharp with authority. “You might have good looks, but you should find somewhere else to flaunt them before it’s too late!”
Ever since my father passed away, Bonnie had remained loyal to him, never considering another mate. Now, she stood tall, her Alpha aura radiating as she glared at Melina. “How could you be so disrespectful? I don’t see what Orlando finds appealing in you!”
Melina giggled, covering her mouth in mock modesty, her beta status doing nothing to curb her arrogance. “Orlando prefers me because I’m more fun compared to some people who are just lifeless in bed.”
“Sophie Reed,” she sneered, her tone dripping with contempt, “how dare you cling to the title of Luna.”
Bonnie, shaking with anger at Melina’s outrageous jibes, shouted, her voice echoing through the hall. “Sophie is like a daughter to me, and if Orlando even thinks of taking another mate, I’ll make sure he regrets it! I’ll never let someone like you become Luna of this pack!”
Melina gave her a disdainful look, her lips curling into a smirk. “And you think you can stop me? You’re just an old woman past her prime.”
“Orlando is obsessed with me, and soon I’ll be the one by his side, bearing his heirs.”
Infuriated by Melina’s arrogance, Bonnie reached for her phone to call Orlando, her hand trembling. But Melina, quick as a flash, grabbed it and smashed it on the floor. “Trying to tattle on me, you old hag?”
Then Melina kicked Bonnie, her heel digging into Bonnie’s side, and slapped her hard. Bonnie, who had always been treated with the utmost respect as the former Luna, had never faced such humiliation. I rushed over to help her, finding her lying still on the floor. Frightened, I pulled out my phone and dialed the pack’s emergency line.
As Bonnie was taken away in the ambulance, I caught Melina’s eye. She mouthed, “Serves you right!” before strutting away confidently, her beta insignia glinting in the light.
The doors to the emergency room finally opened, and the healer wheeled Bonnie out, his expression grim. He sighed, his voice heavy with regret. “Her condition is critical. We’ve done everything we can. You should notify her family to say their farewells.”
Bonnie’s face was pale, her breathing shallow. I clutched her hand, tears streaming down my face. “Mom, it’s me, Sophie!”
Bonnie barely opened her eyes and whispered weakly, “Orlando! Or...lando!” Seeing her like this, I quickly wiped my tears. “Mom, I’ll call Orlando right now!”
After Bonnie was settled in her room, I grabbed my phone to use the mind link to reach Orlando. He would believe me if he saw Bonnie’s state! But after several attempts, there was no response. Frustrated, I paced around the room. “Please answer! Please pick up!”
Finally, after what felt like forever, the mind link connected. Shockingly, it was Melina’s voice that answered. “Where’s Orlando? His mother had a stroke and has little time left. He needs to come now!”
Melina sneered at me through the link. “Sophie Reed, your acting is quite something! I didn’t expect you to wish ill on your mother-in-law for attention!”
“Isn’t the woman in the hospital your real mother? A stroke is a lucky break for you! Now I can finally take my rightful place as Luna!”
She then severed the link abruptly. I stared at the blank space where her voice had been, trying to reconnect, but the link was closed. Damn Melina, playing games now. I decided to go find Orlando myself.
Just as I was about to leave, Bonnie called out, her voice barely a whisper. “Sop...Sophie! Don’t go! Orlando is a lost cause.”
“There’s no time. Listen to me! Call this number on WhatsApp.”
Following Bonnie’s instructions, I used her phone to video call someone. With her final strength, Bonnie divided her assets, leaving everything to me, and cut ties with Orlando.
I sobbed, holding Bonnie’s hand tightly. “Mom, I don’t care about the money. I just want you here with me!”
Bonnie sighed, her hand trembling as she touched my face. “Sophie, I’ve let you down. After I’m gone, leave Orlando.”
“You’re still young, find a mate who treats you well! It was selfish of me to keep you close.”
“Sophie...you must…be happy!”
With those last words, Bonnie closed her eyes, her hand slipping lifelessly beside the bed. The pack’s healer entered quietly, bowing his head in respect as he confirmed her passing. I felt my wolf whimper in the back of my mind, a quiet, mournful sound. But I steeled myself. Bonnie’s legacy, her strength, would live on through me.
