Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Novel Cover

Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King

The auditorium buzzed with excitement as I smoothed down the front of my graduation gown for the tenth time. My fingers trembled slightly, a mixture of nerves and anticipation making my heart flutter against my ribs. Today was supposed to be the beginning of everything I'd worked for these past four years. I scanned the sea of black caps until I found him—Ethan Sterling, valedictorian and future Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack. My Ethan. His broad shoulders stood straight as he waited at the side of the stage, index cards clutched in his hand. Even from this distance, I could see the confidence radiating from him like an aura. "He's going to nail this speech," whispered Jessica beside me, squeezing my hand. It was one of the rare occasions Ethan had allowed her near me in the past year. "And then you'll finally get what you deserve." I nodded, swallowing hard.

Chapter 2

I stumbled through the emptying auditorium, my vision blurred by tears I refused to let fall. The congratulatory chatter and laughter around me felt like daggers to my heart. Four years. Four years of my life given to a man who had just discarded me like yesterday's trash.

Jessica caught up to me in the hallway, her face flushed with anger. "That absolute piece of—"

"I need to talk to him," I cut her off, my voice surprisingly steady despite the hurricane raging inside me.

"Lily, no. He doesn't deserve—"

"I need answers, Jess." I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand. "Four years. I deserve at least that."

She grabbed my arm, her eyes fierce with protective fury. "I'm coming with you."

"No." I gently removed her hand. "This is between me and him."

I found Ethan in a deserted corridor near the reception hall. He was alone, adjusting his tie in front of a decorative mirror, looking every bit the triumphant Alpha. The sight of him—so calm, so unbothered—made my blood boil.

"Why?" The word escaped my lips before I could stop it, echoing in the empty hallway.

Ethan turned, his expression momentarily surprised before settling into something cool and detached. "Lily. I thought you'd left."

"Why?" I repeated, taking a step closer. "Four years, Ethan. Four years I gave you everything. I organized your life, I helped you study, I stood by your side at every pack function despite how they all looked at me. And you couldn't even give me the courtesy of a warning?"

He sighed, as if my pain was merely an inconvenience. "I assumed you understood the reality of our situation."

"What reality?" My voice cracked. "The reality where you let me believe I had a future with you?"

"Be reasonable, Lily." His tone hardened. "You're a wolfless omega. Did you honestly think you could be Luna of the Silver Moon Pack?"

The words hit me like a physical blow. "You made me believe it. Every time you kissed me, every time you told me you loved me—"

"I did care for you," he interrupted, his voice softening into something that might have fooled me once. "But an Alpha has responsibilities. The pack comes first. Always."

"Then why keep me around?" I demanded, anger finally overtaking hurt. "Why waste four years of my life?"

Something shifted in his eyes then—a flash of possessiveness, of irritation. "You were useful. And you were mine."

"Were," I emphasized, taking a step back. "I'm done, Ethan. I'm leaving the pack."

The change was instantaneous. His Alpha aura flared, pressing against me like a physical weight. His eyes flashed with his wolf's anger as he closed the distance between us in two long strides.

"You're not going anywhere," he growled, his voice dropping into that commanding Alpha tone that made lesser wolves cower. "You belong to the Silver Moon Pack. To me."

I pressed myself against the wall, my heart hammering. "You just announced Madison as your mate in front of everyone."

"Madison is my Luna," he said, placing his hands on either side of my head, caging me in. "That doesn't mean I'm letting you go. You still have your uses."

The implication made my stomach turn. "I won't be your side piece, Ethan."

His laugh was cold. "You don't have a choice. If you try to leave, I'll make sure no pack from here to the Canadian border will take you in. A wolfless omega with no family, no connections? You'll be rogue prey within a week."

Fear clutched at my throat, but something else was rising within me—a defiance I didn't know I possessed.

"I'd rather be alone than spend another minute being your doormat," I whispered.

His eyes narrowed dangerously. "We'll see how long that courage lasts when you're sleeping in alleyways." He pushed away from the wall. "Be at the pack house by sunset to collect your things. You'll be moving to the omega quarters. And Lily?" His voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "Don't test me."

He walked away, leaving me trembling against the wall, the full weight of my new reality crashing down around me. I wasn't just heartbroken—I was trapped.

And for the first time in my life, I was truly afraid of what tomorrow would bring.

The heavy oak doors of the pack hall were sealed shut, trapping the suffocating scent of panic inside. At my feet lay the crumpled parchment of the decree from the Lycan Royal Court. The thick wax seal of the Obsidian Moon Pack stared up at me like a blood-red eye, sealing my fate. Prince Jackson, the ruthless, bloodthirsty monster of the North, had demanded an Omega tribute. The decree specifically named my half-sister, Marigold. "I won't send her!" Alpha Reid's voice cracked, completely devoid of the commanding strength an Alpha should possess. I watched in numb horror as my husband of five years pulled Marigold tightly against his chest. His hand rested possessively on her hip, and she buried her face in his neck, sobbing softly. A collective gasp echoed through the gathered Silverfang pack members. The whispers and rumors were true.

The contraction hit me like a freight train, doubling me over in the middle of the pack emergency meeting. I gripped the edge of the conference table, my knuckles turning white as pain radiated through my abdomen. "Luna London?" Marcus's voice cut through the sudden silence. "Is it time?" I nodded, unable to form words as another wave crashed over me. Eight years of building this pack with Sullivan, and now our pup was finally coming—six weeks early. "The Alpha!" someone shouted. "Where's Alpha Sullivan?" The room erupted into chaos. Marcus pushed through the crowd, his face tight with concern. "I'll find him. Someone get Luna London to the pack hospital." Another contraction seized me, stronger than the first.

Pain seared through my body like liquid fire, each heartbeat sending fresh waves of agony through my veins. I tried to sit up, but my limbs felt leaden, refusing to obey my commands. The silver poisoning had spread faster than I'd expected, my immune system weakened by months of neglect and emotional abuse. "Hudson," I whispered, hoping my mate would hear me through our bond. The silence that answered was deafening. I forced myself to stand, gripping the bedpost for support as the room spun around me. My skin burned to the touch, fever spiking through my body as the silver toxins worked their way through my system. I needed Marcus, the pack healer, before the poison reached my heart. The hallway seemed endless as I staggered toward the healing quarters, each step requiring all my remaining strength. The pack house was unusually quiet—most members were at the border patrol meeting I should have attended as Luna.

The venison had been in the oven for three hours. I knew because I'd been watching the clock above the kitchen door the way you watch something you don't actually care about — just to have somewhere to put your eyes. The pack house smelled like rosemary and rendered fat and the kind of warmth that makes a place feel like home, which was funny, because this place had never been home. Not once in three years. I pulled the roasting pan out and set it on the iron trivet. The meat was perfect. Honey-glazed, herb-crusted, the skin crackling at the edges exactly the way Eleanor had taught me the first Thanksgiving I spent here, back when she still believed her son was going to come around. From the great hall, I heard Emmett laugh. It was a real laugh — loose and easy, the kind he never used around me. Daisy said something I couldn't make out, and he laughed again.
