Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Novel Cover

Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King

The new intern, an Omega in our pack, mixed up a patient’s medical history, which led to a severe allergic reaction. As her supervisor and a Delta warrior in the Red Pack, I had to take responsibility. I never expected Sam Burke, the Beta of the Blue Pack and my mate, to suspend me because of it. "Lucia, what gives you the right to feel wronged? Her mistake is your responsibility!" he said sharply, his alpha tone cutting through the air like a command. "Apologize to the patient’s family and take the next week off." With that, he casually put his arm around the intern’s shoulders and walked away, leaving me to deal with the fallout on my own. The weight of his words pressed down on me, and I felt my wolf whimper in the back of my mind, sensing the betrayal. That evening, I stumbled across Sam’s Instagram post: a lavish necklace with the caption, "Comforting a hurt little one tonight." I thought it was a gesture meant for me, until I received a message saying he wouldn’t be coming home. In that instant, all my love and trust shattered. This time, I’m really done with you, Sam.

Chapter 3

Sam Burke returned that evening, the early winter’s chill clinging to him as he stepped into the room. His broad frame, usually so imposing as the Beta of the Blue Pack, seemed tense, his dark eyes scanning the open suitcase on the floor.

“Lucia,” he called, his voice carrying the weight of his rank, though it wavered slightly. The furrow in his brow deepened, and for once, the calm, collected Beta seemed unsettled.

I didn’t respond, tossing the last piece of clothing into the suitcase with more force than necessary. My wolf stirred in the back of my mind, a low whine escaping her as the scent of his distress reached me. I shoved her down, refusing to let her weaken my resolve.

Sam sighed quietly, the sound almost imperceptible. He knew me too well—knew that once I made a decision, I rarely wavered. Even as a Delta in the Red Pack, I had always been stubborn, a trait that both frustrated and endeared me to him.

“Can we talk about this?” he asked, his tone softer now, almost pleading.

I turned to face him, my arms crossed. “Talk about what? You’re already wearing the mate’s mark!” My voice rose, the pain in my chest sharp and unrelenting. “I’m just giving you both the space you seem to need, isn’t that right?”

He moved faster than I expected, his powerful frame closing the distance between us in an instant. He grabbed the suitcase and pulled me into his arms, the force of it sending us both tumbling onto the bed. His scent—musky and familiar—wrapped around me, and for a moment, I hated how much it still affected me.

Taking a deep breath, he spoke quickly, the words rushing out as if he feared I’d stop him. “The mark was meant for you. I asked Sophie to help me because you always say I’m clueless about these things. I wanted to surprise you, to show you that I want you as my mate.”

His voice was earnest, the kind of honesty that only Sam could deliver. He wasn’t one to lie, not to me. And despite everything, I believed him.

“I realize my mistake,” he continued, his hands gripping my shoulders as if afraid I’d slip away. “I was trying not to be too hard on Sophie after hearing about a Delta in another pack who… struggled under pressure. I neglected your feelings and caused you unnecessary pain.”

His words hit me harder than I wanted to admit. Maybe I had misjudged him this time. My wolf whimpered softly, urging me to forgive him, but I pushed her down again, refusing to let her sway me.

I tried to sit up, but his arms tightened around me. His usually calm eyes were now tinged with desperation, the weight of his rank and responsibilities momentarily forgotten in his need to fix this.

After a long pause, I finally spoke, my voice quiet but firm. “This is the only time.”

There was still doubt lingering in my chest, but I couldn’t let a bond that had lasted this long fall apart over an Omega who’d only been around for a short time.

He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead, his touch reverent, as if I were something precious. “Lucia, I promise. You’re the only one I love and the only one I’ll mark as my mate.”

True to his word, Sam moved swiftly to clear things up. The next day, he made a public announcement about our bond in the pack’s gathering hall. The air was thick with the scents of anticipation and curiosity as he stood before the assembled wolves, his presence commanding as always.

“Lucia Griffin,” he began, his voice steady despite the tension in the room. “I, Sam Burke, Beta of the Blue Pack, ask you to accept me as your mate.”

The room erupted into murmurs of congratulations, but my attention was fixed on Sam. He knelt before me, his dark eyes locked on mine, waiting for my response.

“Yes,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper but carrying the weight of my decision.

Just as he slipped the mate’s ring onto my finger, someone bumped into me, causing the ring to slip off and roll away. Sophie, the Omega who had been standing nearby, let out a gasp and ran out of the hall in tears.

Sam quickly stood, his protective instincts kicking in as he shielded me with his body. His brow furrowed as he glanced toward where Sophie had disappeared, his concern for her unmistakable.

And in that moment, despite everything, I felt the cracks in my resolve begin to widen.

A thousand crystal prisms fractured the golden light of the Watkins mansion ballroom, casting a warm, celestial glow over my eighteenth birthday. To the elite of the city mingling around me, this was merely the societal debut of the beloved Watkins princess. To me, it was a miracle of flesh and bone. Every breath of jasmine-scented air, every clink of champagne flutes, was a victory against the dark. From across the room, my mother caught my eye. She offered a soft, knowing smile that carried the ancient, nurturing weight of the Pawnshop Proprietress she once was. Beside her, my father—the Judge who had pulled my shattered soul from the eighteen levels of hell—nodded, his gaze fierce and protective. For a fleeting second, the opulent ballroom faded, and I felt the phantom heat of purgatory licking at my ankles. My thumb moved instinctively, rubbing the small, raised white scar on my left wrist. Two hundred years of waiting leaves a mark the soul refuses to let the flesh forget.

I tapped my pencil against the edge of my sketchpad, staring at the half-finished design for the ceremonial necklace I planned to surprise Marcus with for our fifth anniversary. I whispered to my wolf, who purred contentedly in my mind. *Beautiful, like all your creations, Victoria.* My inner wolf had always been my greatest supporter, even before Marcus. I smiled, setting down my pencil and stretching my arms above my head. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our shared study, casting a warm glow over the polished oak desk. Marcus had left his tablet behind this morning in his rush to handle what he'd called an "urgent pack matter." I reached for it, thinking I could review some of the anniversary celebration plans we'd been discussing. We'd granted each other access to our devices years ago—a symbol of trust between mates. The screen lit up at my touch, revealing a messaging app I rarely used. A notification blinked insistently in the corner—from Amber Rodriguez, our new pack coordinator.

The late afternoon sun streamed through the administration office windows, casting long shadows across the scattered enrollment forms that covered my desk. I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and reached for another stack of papers, the familiar routine of organizing pack documents usually bringing me a sense of purpose. As the pack's Omega, these administrative tasks were among the few responsibilities that made me feel useful, even if they were considered beneath the notice of higher-ranking wolves. My fingers moved methodically through the forms for the upcoming pup training season, checking names against birth records and ensuring each young wolf was properly registered. The work was meticulous, requiring attention to detail that most pack members found tedious. But I found comfort in the order, in the neat columns and careful documentation that made sense of our pack's future. That's when I saw it. Gracie Hoffman's enrollment form lay innocuously among the others, her small photo clipped to the corner showing a sweet face with curious gray eyes. But it wasn't her picture that made my hands freeze mid-motion. It was the line marked 'Father' in neat, official script: Callum King.

After enduring five tumultuous years with Nikolas Adams, the Beta of our pack, because of Yara Thomas, the manipulative Gamma, I was utterly worn out. I decided to be with my childhood friend, Kashton Diaz, the Alpha who had always been by my side. We spent seven years together, and everyone believed Kashton adored me, being attentive to every detail in our lives. But right after we submitted our mate bond declaration to the pack council, I stumbled upon a stack of letters. They were from Kashton to Yara. The letters expressed Kashton’s deep love for Yara. At the end of one letter, he wrote: “For Yara’s happiness, I’m willing to sacrifice and spend my life with someone I don’t love, as long as she’s happy.” It turned out the happiness I thought I had was just a beautifully crafted lie, a trap designed just for me. I didn’t cry or create a scene. Instead, I submitted my application to join a research institute in the Pacific Northwest, focused on improving food resources for our pack. --- After picking up the mate bond severance papers from Marcus Watkins, a Delta in our pack, I headed to the payphone on the street corner.
