Chapter 1

The storm hit just as my rental car crested the final ridge, transforming the Pacific Northwest wilderness into a wall of driving rain and howling wind. Lightning split the sky, illuminating the massive fortress that rose from the mountainside like something from another century—all dark stone and towering spires that seemed to claw at the storm clouds above.

I gripped the steering wheel tighter, my wolf stirring uneasily beneath my skin. Something felt wrong. The closer I got to Alpha King Vladislav Burke's territory, the more my instincts screamed at me to turn around and drive back to Seattle, back to Marie and our quiet life planning our mating ceremony.

But I couldn't. This land treaty was too important—not just for my small pack, but for maintaining the delicate balance between werewolf territories and human government oversight. As the only lawyer in our pack with federal connections, I was the obvious choice for this negotiation.

The massive iron gates swung open as I approached, operated by guards I couldn't see through the rain. My headlights swept across a courtyard filled with shadows that moved too purposefully to be tricks of the storm. Pack members. Dozens of them, maybe hundreds, all watching from doorways and windows as I parked near the main entrance.

The moment I stepped out of the car, it hit me.

Power. Raw, ancient, overwhelming power that crashed over me like a physical blow. My wolf whimpered and dropped to its belly in my mind, every instinct screaming submission. My knees buckled, and I barely caught myself against the car door, gasping as the dominance aura pressed down on me like a crushing weight.

I'd never felt anything like it. In my small pack, our Alpha's presence was warm, protective. This was something else entirely—predatory, possessive, absolute.

"Welcome, Byron Watson."

The voice carried easily through the storm, and I looked up to see him standing in the massive doorway of the fortress. Alpha King Vladislav Burke was exactly as imposing as the stories claimed—tall, broad-shouldered, with silver-streaked dark hair and eyes that seemed to glow in the lightning flashes. But it wasn't his physical presence that made my wolf cower. It was the sheer force of his dominance, centuries of absolute authority radiating from him in waves.

I forced myself to straighten, to walk toward the entrance on unsteady legs. Every step felt like moving through thick mud, my wolf fighting the urge to bare its throat in submission. The pack members I glimpsed in my peripheral vision watched with predatory intensity, and I realized with growing unease that I was the only outsider here. The only one not bound to this Alpha's will.

"Your Majesty," I managed, my voice rougher than I'd intended. "Thank you for hosting these negotiations."

His smile was sharp, revealing teeth that seemed too white, too perfect. "The pleasure is entirely mine. I've been looking forward to meeting you for some time, Mr. Watson."

The way he said my name made my skin crawl, like he was tasting it. As I climbed the stone steps, his gaze never left me, studying me with an intensity that made me feel like prey being evaluated by a predator.

The entrance hall was massive, with vaulted ceilings that disappeared into shadow and tapestries depicting wolf hunts and conquest. But what struck me most was the silence—hundreds of pack members lined the walls and balconies above, all watching me with the same predatory focus as their Alpha King.

"You're smaller than I expected," the Alpha King said, circling me slowly. His dominance aura pressed closer, and I had to lock my knees to keep from dropping to the floor. "But the bloodline is unmistakable. Pure. Untainted."

Bloodline? I opened my mouth to ask what he meant, but his next words stopped me cold.

"Your mate—Marie, isn't it?—she must be quite special to have caught the attention of such quality genetics."

Ice shot through my veins. How did he know about Marie? I'd mentioned her in my initial correspondence, but only briefly, professionally.

"She is," I said carefully, my hand unconsciously moving to touch my neck where her mark would soon rest. "We're planning our mating ceremony when I return to Seattle."

Something flickered in the Alpha King's eyes—amusement, perhaps, or satisfaction. "How... quaint. Though I suspect your plans may change once you understand the full scope of our arrangement."

Before I could ask what he meant, he turned and began walking deeper into the fortress. "Come. We have much to discuss, and the night is still young."

I followed, because I had no choice. His Alpha tone left no room for refusal, and my wolf was too cowed to even consider resistance. But with each step deeper into his domain, the weight of his attention pressing down on me like a physical thing, one thought echoed in my mind:

I should never have come here.
