Chapter 2

Sophia Pov

The screech of burning rubber sliced through the air, loud enough to rattle my teeth.

I clamped my eyes shut, bracing for the bone-shattering impact, my heart stopping entirely.

The heat of the engine blasted against my bare legs.

When the expected pain didn't come, I forced my eyes open. The massive, matte-black front wheel of the lead motorcycle had stopped a mere two inches from my knees.

Behind it, an entire army of blacked-out bikes halted in perfect unison.

Hundreds of them choked the boulevard, their engines low, rumbling growls that vibrated right through the soles of my shoes.

The rider of the lead bike swung a long leg over the frame. He stood well over six feet, built like a mountain of pure muscle encased in a dark leather cut over a black hoodie.

With a slow, deliberate movement, he reached up and pulled off his helmet.

The breath caught in my throat. He had a sharp, chiseled jawline shadowed with dark stubble, and hair that fell in dark waves across his forehead.

But it was his eyes that held me captive, a piercing, lethal silver that seemed to look right through my soul.

Gasps erupted from the sidewalk behind me. The paparazzi, who had been relentlessly pursuing me from the hotel lobby, suddenly stopped in their tracks.

"Oh my God," a reporter whispered, his voice trembling. "That's Lucas Knight."

"The Biker King, Lucas Knight," another chimed in, lowering his camera in sheer terror. "What is he doing in the middle of the city?"

Lucas Knight. The name alone sent shivers down the spine of every elite family in Los Angeles.

He didn't just rule the underground motorcycle club empire; he held the city's entire criminal and corporate underworld.

Even billionaires like Ethan Sullivan avoided crossed paths with him.

And I was currently blocking his way.

The adrenaline that had kept me running suddenly evaporated, replaced by a wave of crushing exhaustion.

The humiliation from the ballroom, my father's cruel words, and the near-miss with death crashed into me all at once. My vision blurred. My knees gave out, and the ground rushed up to meet me.

I braced for the hard asphalt, but it never came.

A strong, calloused hand clamped around my waist, lifting me effortlessly before I could hit the pavement.

I was pulled flush against a broad, solid chest that felt like granite. A sudden jolt of electricity shot straight through my skin at the contact, making my breath hitch.

"Easy there," Lucas growled. His voice was a deep, gravelly baritone that vibrated against my own ribs.

I looked up, trapped in his intense gaze. Close up, his scent washed over me, leather, woodsmoke, and a raw, masculine musk that made my head spin.

I tried to pull away, embarrassed, but his grip only tightened, anchoring me against him.

His eyes suddenly narrowed, shifting from my face down to my neckline.

My cream dress had shifted, exposing my collarbone and the antique silver necklace resting against my skin.

It was a unique, delicate piece passed down to me by my late mother, a silver crescent moon wrapping around a rare, deep-blue star sapphire.

Lucas froze. The icy indifference on his face shattered, replaced by a sudden, burning intensity.

Before I could react, he raised his free hand. His rough knuckles brushed accidentally against the sensitive skin of my throat, sending a fierce shiver down my spine.

He hooked two fingers around the pendant, lifting it slightly to inspect it.

"Where did you get this?" he demanded. The casual tone was gone, replaced by a raw, demanding edge.

"It... it was my mother's," I stammered, my voice barely a whisper.

His silver eyes locked onto mine, searching them for what felt like an eternity. The sexual tension between us turned thick, suffocatingly hot despite the cooling evening air.

He looked at the necklace, then back at my tear-stained face.

Behind us, the rapid-fire clicking of camera shutters broke the silence.

The paparazzi had recovered from their shock and were snapping photos of the infamous Biker King holding the disgraced billionaire heiress in the middle of the street.

Lucas flicked a lethal glance over his shoulder at the reporters. The sheer dominance in his posture made them step back.

Instead of pushing me aside or leaving me to the wolves, Lucas turned back to me. Without a word, he lifted me into his arms, scooping me up as if I weighed nothing.

"Wait... what are you doing?" I gasped, instinctively wrapping my arms around his neck to keep from falling.

My fingers dug into the soft leather of his jacket, feeling the hard muscle shifting beneath.

"Getting you out of here," he said shortly.

He walked over to a sleek, black luxury SUV that had pulled up from the back of the convoy.

One of his men immediately threw the door open. Lucas slid me onto the plush leather backseat before climbing in right after me.

"Drive to the private hospital," Lucas ordered the driver. "Now."

As the SUV tore away from the curb, leaving the flashing cameras in the dust, I slumped against the seat.

I was safe from the media, but sitting next to this dangerous, overwhelming man felt like stepping from the frying pan into the fire.

My phone in my clutch began to vibrate. I pulled it out, my eyes widening at the notifications flooding my screen.

The paparazzi photos had already hit the internet.

The headlines were wild, spreading like wildfire across every social media platform.

"DUMPED BY SULLIVAN, CLAIMED BY KNIGHT: Sophia Carter Spotted in the Arms of the Biker King Minutes After Public Rejection!"

"Has Sophia Carter Become Lucas Knight's Newest Woman?"

A second later, the screen changed to an incoming call from Ethan.

I stared at it, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. I didn't answer. The call went to voicemail, and a barrage of texts immediately followed from my ex-fiancé.

Ethan: What the hell is the meaning of this, Sophia?

Ethan: Why are you with Lucas Knight? Do you have any idea what these rumors will do to the Sullivan reputation?

Ethan: Answer your damn phone! You are making a fool out of me!

I stared at the messages, a cold satisfaction washing over my grief. Ethan hadn't cared about breaking my heart, but the moment his own fragile ego and reputation were threatened, he was furious.

Vanessa's calculated attempt to destroy my name had completely backfired, replaced by a scandal that was entirely out of their control.

"He's not worth your tears," Lucas spoke up, breaking the silence.

I turned my head to look at him. He was watching me, his long legs crossed.

"You don't know anything about it," I whispered, turning my face away to hide the fresh tears welling in my eyes.

"I know enough," he replied smoothly.

The SUV came to a smooth halt in the private, underground parking garage of a high-end medical facility.

The driver stepped out to open the door, but Lucas motioned him away.

The space inside the vehicle suddenly felt incredibly small. Lucas leaned forward, narrowing the distance between us.

The heavy, intoxicating tension returned in full force, making my pulse race for an entirely different reason.

He reached out, his large hand gently capturing my jaw. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear with surprising gentleness.

His touch was warm, sending a spark of fire straight to my core.

He looked deeply into my eyes, his gaze dropping briefly to the silver necklace against my chest before rising back to meet my stare.

A dark, knowing smile touched the corners of his lips.

"I've finally found you," he murmured.
