Chapter 1

Cayden Gomez and I were destined to be mates, bound by the Moon Goddess herself.

But when Kaitlyn Snyder whispered her lies, he turned his back on that bond.

In one brutal moment, he shattered me.

His claws tore through my chest, and he shoved me into the depths of a rogue-infested territory.

That was the moment I realized my efforts were in vain.

As punishment, the mate bond—once vibrant and full of emotion—was severed, leaving me hollow. No jealousy, no anger, no pain. Just emptiness.

Later, when Cayden finally noticed my indifference, he demanded, his voice trembling, “You used to care so much. Why don’t you react when I’m with her?”

I only looked at him, calm and detached, as I performed the rejection ritual. “I, Selene Robertson, reject you, Cayden Gomez, Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, as my mate.”

And I walked away without a second glance.

---

On my birthday, Cayden stood before me, his Alpha aura radiating cold authority.

“Selene,” he said, his voice low and dangerous, “I never wanted to hurt you.”

“But you crossed a line. Kaitlyn is pregnant with my pup. How could you try to harm her?”

Before I could respond, his claws slashed through my chest, the pain searing through me as he pushed me over the edge of the territory’s boundary.

I tumbled into the rogue-infested wasteland, the impact knocking the breath from my lungs.

Above me, I heard Kaitlyn’s voice, trembling with false concern. “Alpha, I don’t know why she would do this to me. I’m just so grateful you were here to protect me.”

Cayden’s voice was cold and dismissive. “She deserves this. Anyone who would harm you deserves to suffer.”

Kaitlyn feigned hesitation. “But… she’s your mate.”

Cayden’s response was final, his Alpha tone cutting through the air like a blade. “Mate? Kaitlyn, you’re the only one I want by my side.”

Those words echoed in my ears as I lay broken on the ground, the scent of blood and rogue territory surrounding me.

And then, as the bond between us flickered and died, I heard the whisper of my wolf, faint and distant.

“It’s over,” she said, her voice heavy with resignation.

The mate bond was gone, leaving only silence in its wake.

I had always imagined this moment differently. In every version I'd dreamed up over the past nine months, there were warm hands waiting. A mate's voice, low and steady, telling me I'd done well. The sharp, sweet smell of a new beginning cutting through the sterile air of the Healing Center. Instead, I lay alone on a narrow cot in the coldest room they had, and I brought my daughter into the world with nothing but the sound of my own ragged breathing to mark the moment. I'm Haven Morris. Fated mate to Bryan Williams, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack. Late Bloomer. Wolfless, they liked to call me. A label that had followed me like a shadow for seven years—longer than most Omegas had to endure, and I wasn't even an Omega by blood.

The silver flute felt warm against my palms as I stood beneath the Shadowcrest Pavilion's moonlit arch, its familiar weight grounding me in this moment I'd dreamed of for three years. The Inter-Pack Gathering stretched before me like a sea of expectant faces—hundreds of werewolves from across the East Coast, their eyes reflecting the ceremonial torches that cast dancing shadows across the ancient stone amphitheater. My fingers traced the intricate engravings on grandmother's flute, the same patterns she'd taught me to read like sacred text. Tonight, I would perform the Moonrise Serenade, a piece so complex that only a handful of wolves in our generation could master it. Alexander had promised me this moment, had whispered against my ear just hours ago that I would make him proud. The autumn wind carried the mingled scents of different packs—pine from the northern territories, salt from the coastal clans, earth from the mountain dwellers. But underneath it all was Alexander's commanding presence, cedarwood and smoke, wrapping around me like an invisible claim. "My fellow Alphas, Betas, and honored pack members," Alexander's voice boomed across the gathering, that familiar authority that made my wolf purr with pride. He stood at the center of the ceremonial circle, magnificent in his formal black attire, every inch the powerful leader who'd chosen me. "Tonight marks not only our annual celebration of unity, but a moment of profound significance for the Shadowcrest Pack." I straightened, preparing for my introduction.

For five years, I was locked away in the freezing royal dungeon, starved and used as a bloody plaything by the kingdom's sadistic Cabinet Minister, Brandt Fischer. He tortured me daily for one twisted reason: I simply looked like someone else. When he visited my cell to casually announce my father's execution and drag a silver dagger across my neck, he expected me to beg. Instead, I laughed, sank my teeth directly into his carotid artery, and was violently thrown against a jagged stone wall to my death. As my skull cracked and my blood stained the moss, I thought about my so-called family. The moment Brandt had demanded me, my father, the Duke, handed me over without a single hesitation to save his own political career. I was nothing but a disposable pawn, left to rot in the dark while the monsters who ruined my life thrived. I died suffocating on my own blood and absolute, destructive vengeance. Then, I opened my eyes. I was lying in my silk-sheeted bed, reborn as my fifteen-year-old self. Today was the exact day Lord Daryl Langley, the God of War, would be ambushed and crippled—the event that allowed Brandt to seize ultimate power. I immediately stole a horse, rode to the palace gates, and threw myself directly in front of Daryl's moving carriage. "I just didn't want to see a hero die like a slaughtered pig." I didn't care if I had to shatter my own ankle to hijack his convoy. This time, I was going to save the general, and he would become the blade I use to slaughter them all.

I froze mid-step, my hand clutching the doorframe as hushed voices drifted from around the corner. The pack house was usually buzzing with activity this time of morning, but today, an unnatural tension hung in the air. "Luna Emilia is going to be devastated," came a whispered voice—Megan from the kitchen staff, if I wasn't mistaken. "Alpha Cooper took her to Moonveil Territory last night instead of accompanying Luna to her pregnancy check with Dr. Cross." My heart stuttered. The pregnancy check. Today was the day we'd been waiting for—the day we might finally confirm that this pregnancy had taken hold after three devastating losses. "I heard he called it 'urgent pack business,'" another voice replied—James, one of Cooper's Delta warriors. "But everyone knows what's really going on with him and that girl." "Does Luna know?" Megan's voice dropped even lower. "How could she?

The first rays of dawn filtered through the silk curtains of my room in the pack house, painting everything in shades of gold and rose. Today was the day. After ten years of waiting, of growing together, of building something beautiful from childhood friendship into destined love, Elian and I would finally complete our mate ceremony. I stretched beneath the covers, my hand instinctively moving to rest on my still-flat stomach. The pregnancy was so new that even I could barely believe it—a miracle, Dr. Mitchell had called it, given the rarity of Alpha fertility. The timing felt perfect, like the Moon Goddess herself had blessed our union with this gift. Downstairs, I could hear the bustling activity that had started before sunrise. Pack members moved with purpose through the corridors, their voices carrying excitement and warmth. The ceremonial grounds behind the pack house would be transformed into something magical by evening, with white flowers and silver ribbons honoring the Moon Goddess who had brought Elian and me together all those years ago.
