Chapter 5

Marcus Hale stood in the doorway of the banquet hall at half past four, watching the final preparations unfold.

He had been Beta long enough to read a room before anyone spoke. The tables were draped in Ironvale's colors—deep green and silver—and the autumn harvest centerpieces smelled like apples and woodsmoke. Everything looked correct. Everything felt wrong.

He counted three things that shouldn't be there.

First: the Luna had not spoken to the Alpha all day. Marcus had passed them twice in separate corridors, and neither had acknowledged the other's existence. Not anger. Not avoidance. Just the flat, careful distance of two wolves who had stopped pretending.

Second: the head-table seating had been repositioned. Jocelyn Greene had overseen it personally this morning, and the Luna's chair—the one with the carved moon on the back—now sat two seats removed from the Alpha's. A visiting dignitary's chair had been wedged in between, and beside that, a smaller seat that matched nothing else in the hall.

Third: Aidan's ring had not stopped turning. Marcus had stood beside him during the afternoon briefing, and the Alpha's fingers had worked that silver band in slow, restless circles the entire time. The tell of a man whose wolf was uneasy and whose pride wouldn't let him name it.

Marcus pulled out his phone and scrolled to a name he hadn't contacted in eight months. Garrett, a delta in the eastern Ashwood Pack. They'd trained together years ago. Good wolf. Discreet.

He typed: *Checking in. How's Ashwood's ranked structure these days? Any openings?*

He told himself it was contingency planning. He told himself he was being smart.

He sent the message and pocketed the phone before anyone saw.

---

I arrived at the banquet hall twenty minutes before the formal start.

The corridor outside was already crowded—ranked wolves and their families filing in, voices rising in that careful, performative cheer people use when they know they're being watched. I smoothed the front of my ceremonial jacket and felt the weight of the journal and the wolfsbane dish tucked inside the inner pocket.

Barnaby had whined when I left. I hadn't looked back.

I stepped into the hall. The noise didn't stop, but it changed—conversations continuing at the same volume, but with a new quality. Awareness. Every wolf in the room knew I had entered, even the ones who didn't turn to look.

I walked toward the head table.

Jocelyn was already there.

She sat in my chair—the Luna's chair, the one with the carved moon on the high back—wearing a gown the exact shade of my ceremonial colors. Pale silver-blue, embroidered at the collar, cut to flatter. She had pinned her hair up with a thin circlet that caught the light when she moved.

She looked up as I approached. Her smile was warm, surprised, as if she hadn't orchestrated every detail of this moment weeks in advance.

"Luna Macie," she said, rising halfway in a gesture of deference that didn't involve actually vacating the chair. "I hope you don't mind—Alpha Aidan asked me to sit here for the ceremonial greeting. Just for tonight."

I looked at her. I looked at the chair. I looked at Aidan, seated one place over, his posture relaxed, his attention already half-turned toward the Gamma on his other side.

He knew I was standing there. He didn't look up.

Through the bond—faint now, threadbare, but still conducting—I felt nothing. Not guilt. Not defiance. Just the flat, empty absence of a man who had already decided and considered the matter closed.

I glanced at the table. My nameplate had been moved. It sat two seats down, beside a visiting elder from a neutral pack I barely knew.

Jocelyn was still standing, still holding that half-risen posture, her expression open and apologetic. Performing concern for an audience that wanted to believe in her.

I met her eyes. She held my gaze for one second, two—and then her mouth curved, just slightly. Not a smile anyone else would see. Just the faint tightening of someone who had won and knew it.

I walked to my new seat. I pulled out the chair. I sat down.

The hall filled in around me. Wolves took their places. Conversations resumed. Clara, seated two tables away with the ranked females, leaned toward the wolf beside her and began an animated discussion about the centerpiece arrangements, her voice deliberately loud, deliberately bright.

Aidan lifted his glass. He turned to the Gamma and said something I couldn't hear. The Gamma laughed.

Jocelyn settled into the Luna's chair like she had always been there.

I folded my hands in my lap. I felt the journal's weight against my ribs. I felt my wolf stir beneath the years of suppressant—sluggish still, but waking.

The Banquet had begun.

Aidan stood. The hall went quiet.

He raised his glass, and every wolf in the room raised theirs in response. His voice carried across the space, strong and sure.

"To Ironvale," he said. "To the pack that built itself. To the strength we've earned."

The hall erupted in affirmation. Glasses lifted. Voices echoed the toast.

Aidan's eyes swept the room. They landed on me for half a second—no recognition, no acknowledgment—and moved on.

He sat down. Jocelyn leaned toward him, her hand resting lightly on the arm of the Luna's chair, and said something that made him smile.

I watched them. I felt the bond flicker and go still.

Then I reached into my jacket, closed my fingers around the edge of the wolfsbane dish, and waited.
