Chapter 3

I smelled the change before I saw it. Cedar smoke and something floral, too fresh, drifting from the dining hall as I came down the corridor. By the time I reached the doorway, the seating had already been rearranged.

A fourth chair sat at the head of the table, wedged between Aidan's and mine. Jocelyn was already in it, her knees angled toward him, her hands folded in that practiced, modest way.

"She'll be joining us going forward," Aidan said, not looking up from his plate. "Every meal. It's settled."

He said it the way he announced pack business—flat, final, no room built in for a response. No one had asked me. No one had told me before this moment.

I sat down anyway. I unfolded my napkin. I told myself it was one chair, one dinner, and I had survived worse this month.

Jocelyn reached across the table for the water pitcher. Her sleeve caught the edge of my plate, tipping it a half inch, and her arm brushed mine on the way back.

"Oh—sorry, Luna," she murmured, eyes wide, already retreating. "I didn't see you there."

It looked like an accident to everyone at that table. It was not an accident. I had watched her calibrate smaller gestures than this for weeks. She had chosen the angle, the timing, the softness of her voice, all of it built to read as clumsy innocence to a room that wanted to believe in her.

Aidan smiled at her. "You're fine."

Through the bond, I felt it—warm, uncomplicated, easy. Pleasure at her nearness. The exact opposite of what I'd felt from him in years. Not desire, exactly. Comfort. The comfort of a man who had found something that asked nothing hard of him.

I set down my fork.

"Excuse me," I said quietly, and stood.

No one looked up. Aidan didn't ask where I was going. Jocelyn didn't stop talking to him long enough to notice I'd left. I walked out of the hall and no one called me back, and the silence behind me said more than any word could have.

That night, I sat at the wardrobe with the floorboard pried up and my journal open on my knees.

I went through it page by page, the way I hadn't let myself in years—not skimming, not filing, but reading. The southeastern renewal. The northwestern border arrangement, signed at 4:47 on a Tuesday no one but me would remember. Three eastern pack agreements that gave Ironvale a trade corridor Aidan called his masterstroke at last spring's gathering. Contacts through the Lycan court's outer circle that I had reached quietly, using a name I hadn't spoken aloud in six years—contacts Aidan didn't know existed, would never think to ask about, because in his mind, none of it required asking.

An hour passed. Barnaby lay against my leg, his breathing steady, and I let my hand rest in his coat while I turned the last page.

Then I closed the journal and did something I had never done before. I thought, seriously, about what I would carry if I left this room and did not come back.

The list was short. That told me something too.

The next afternoon, I went looking for a treaty draft I'd left in Aidan's office three days earlier—a copy I needed to cross-reference against my own notes. It wasn't where I'd left it. The stack beside it had been shifted, corners no longer aligned the way I always left them. On the corner of the desk sat a folded scrap of paper, and when I picked it up, I found it was blank—but the surface held a faint oil sheen, the kind a phone screen leaves when it's been pressed flat against paper to photograph it.

I heard footsteps in the hall and slid the scrap into my pocket. Jocelyn appeared in the doorway a moment later, a small notebook clutched against her chest, her smile arriving a half second too late.

"Just helping Aidan organize his correspondence," she said. "He asked."

"Of course he did," I said, and left before my face could tell her anything.

I didn't go back to my quarters. I rode instead to Eleanor's care suite, the way I did every week, and found her sitting by the window with a blanket over her knees, watching the light move across the floor.

"You came," she said, and took my hand before I'd even sat down. Her grip was stronger than her body should have allowed. "You always come."

We talked about nothing—the weather, a bird that had built a nest outside her window—for most of the hour. Then, near the end, she tightened her fingers around mine.

"Whatever is happening in that pack house," she said, "you are worth more than he knows how to see."

I didn't answer. I couldn't. I just sat with her until the light went gold, and then I kissed her forehead and told her I'd see her soon.

Before I left, I stopped at the healer's office and authorized a payment from my private accounts—enough to cover six months of care, quietly, without explanation.

The healer glanced at the number, then at me. "That's further out than usual, Luna."

"Just being careful," I said, and walked out into the dark.
