Chapter 3

CARA POV:

He stood there, impossibly tall, dressed in a dark, immaculate suit that made him look more like a visiting king than a pack member. His stormy gray eyes, sharp and intelligent, took in my pale face and wide, panicked gaze.

His gaze flickered past me, toward the alcove I had just fled. He hadn't heard or seen anything, but his Alpha instincts were clearly telling him something was wrong. His eyes narrowed, returning to me.

"What is it?" he asked, his tone demanding.

Panic seized me. If he found out, if he told anyone what I'd seen, my fragile plan would be ruined. Danny would know I was aware of everything.

"Nothing," I choked out, trying to pull my arm from his grasp. His fingers didn't budge. "Please, I... I felt faint."

He didn't believe me. I could see it in the hard set of his jaw.

"Please," I whispered, my voice breaking. I hated the weakness in it, but I used it. It was all I had. "Whatever you think you saw, or didn't see... please, don't say anything. I'm begging you."

He studied my face for a long, silent moment. An unreadable emotion flickered in his eyes. It wasn't pity. It was something sharper, more assessing. Finally, after an eternity, he gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod. He released my arm, left.

When his figure completely disappeared, the fear and pleading in my eyes completely disappeared. But my head is a mess, until I was back in the sterile silence of the room Danny and I shared.

The room was filled with 'us.' Photos on the wall, his clothes mixed with mine in the closet, trinkets from trips we'd taken. Lies. It was all lies.

A cold rage, clean and sharp, sliced through my pain.

I grabbed a wicker basket from the corner and began to move through the room. I pulled our smiling photos from their frames. I gathered the little gifts, the dried flowers, the stupid souvenirs. I stripped the bed of the pillowcases that smelled like him.

I carried the basket to the stone fireplace, my movements deliberate. With trembling hands, I lit a match. I watched as the first photograph—us, on our mating day, his arm wrapped around me—curled, blackened, and turned to ash.

I dumped the rest of the basket's contents into the flames. I watched our life together burn.

With the fire still roaring behind me, I picked up my phone. I found the contact for the pack administrator who handled sponsorships.

"James," I said, my voice devoid of all emotion. "This is Cara Weiss. I'm calling to terminate my sponsorship of Cindy Hooper. Effective immediately."

There was a surprised silence on the other end. "Uh... of course, Luna. Is there a reason?"

"The reason," I said, looking into the fire, "is my own."

I hung up before he could ask another question. It was a small act, a quiet declaration of war.

But I just didn’t expect Danny to confront me so quickly.

CULLEN POV:

I was leaving my meeting with the old Alpha, Moran Senior, when I felt the disturbance in the air. The scent of an Omega in distress—wildflowers and rain, laced with the bitter tang of betrayal.

It was her. The wolfless mate of my fool of a nephew.

My instincts, usually dormant and controlled, stirred with an unfamiliar agitation. I followed the scent and found her stumbling from the garden, her face a mask of shattered composure.

When I caught her arm, a strange current passed between us. It wasn't the jolt of a fated bond; it was something else, a resonance my wolf couldn't immediately place. It was... significant.

She was terrified. Not of me, but of what I might have seen. Her plea to keep silent was desperate, but her eyes held a flicker of something hard beneath the fear. A survivor's glint.

I let her go. I watched her run back to the pack house, a broken thing, yet not entirely defeated.

I was intrigued.

My wolf paced in my mind, not with the possessive roar of a mate found, but with the restless energy of a predator that has scented a complex and fascinating prey. The Moran family was rotten, and this girl was caught in the middle of it.

Or was she?

Her plea for silence was not just about hiding her pain. It was strategic. She was hiding something more than just her discovery of an affair.

I walked toward the alcove she had fled. The air was thick with the lingering scents of Danny and another she-wolf. The story was obvious.

But her reaction was not. A typical Omega would be howling, confronting, making a scene. She was doing the opposite. She was hiding. She was planning.

This Cara Weiss was far more interesting than I had been led to believe.

I made a mental note. I would have my people look into her. Not out of any sense of familial duty, but out of a cold, sharp curiosity.

A game was being played in the Silver Creek Pack. And I had the distinct feeling that the weakest-looking piece on the board was the one I needed to watch.
