Rejected by Fate's Alpha Novel Cover

Rejected by Fate's Alpha

The Alpha Queen brought my cousin to the Silver Moon Pack three years ago, and since then, every suitor who came to propose to her met with misfortune—either death or severe injury. The pack began to whisper that she was cursed, a harbinger of doom. Fearing for her, the Alpha Queen decided that Jaycee would marry alongside me, as a co-mate to Remington, the Alpha of our pack. Remington and I had grown up together, and I couldn’t bear the thought of him falling victim to the so-called curse. I protested fiercely, causing a scene in the packhouse, but my mother, the Alpha Queen, locked me in the storage room. From there, I could only watch as Jaycee was taken to the packhouse as his mate, while I was left to enter in the dead of night as his chosen one. When he saw me, he whispered, "Evelyn, your mother mixed up the order, but it doesn’t matter. My heart belongs only to you." He explained that Jaycee wanted a child to secure her place in the pack, believing it would shield her from further scorn. "Once she has a child, she’ll step aside, and you’ll take your rightful place," he promised. But after that night, I never saw him again.

Chapter 4

Around noon, Annika brought me lunch. This time, it wasn’t leftovers, but the portion was pitiful—just a bowl of plain oatmeal and a few wilted vegetables. Clearly, it was whatever was left from the pack’s meal.

I asked casually, “Where’s Alpha Remington?”

Annika hesitated, her expression uneasy. “A few of the Beta’s friends missed the Marking Ceremony yesterday. Alpha’s with them now, accompanying Luna Jaycee for a chat.”

I muttered to myself, “I know those people. Why didn’t he invite me to join?”

Annika looked uncomfortable, her lips pressing together as if she wanted to say more but didn’t dare.

I forced a bitter smile. “It’s fine. Just tell me.”

She sighed softly. “Alpha… never mentioned to anyone that you were his chosen mate.”

Even though I had braced myself for it, the words still cut deep. My chest tightened, and my wolf, *Aria*, whimpered faintly in the back of my mind.

Remington, you once told me your heart belonged only to me. Was that the truth?

I didn’t touch the lunch Annika brought. Instead, I left it for Fluffy, who wagged his tail gratefully as he ate.

By evening, I woke up coughing, my body trembling under the thin blanket. I felt cold and feverish, my skin burning to the touch.

I tried to call for help, but my voice came out hoarse and weak. Fluffy barked anxiously beside me, but no one else seemed to hear.

I reached for the water pitcher on the table, but my hand slipped, and I tumbled to the floor.

Suddenly, the door slammed open, and for a moment, hope flared in my chest—was it Remington?

But my heart sank as I saw Bowen, a drunken rogue, stumbling into the room. His eyes lit up with predatory glee as he scooped me up from the floor, his breath reeking of alcohol.

“Well, well, what do we have here? A little beauty hiding in this corner,” he slurred, his hands tightening around me. “C’mon, give me a kiss.”

I was too weak to fight him off, my fevered body refusing to cooperate. As his greasy lips came closer, I grabbed a pair of scissors from the table and tried to stab him, but he twisted my wrist, and the blade sank into my shoulder instead.

The pain shocked him sober, and he dropped me, backing away in panic.

At that moment, the door opened again.

This time, it was Remington, with Jaycee trailing behind him.

Jaycee gasped dramatically, covering her eyes and burying her face in Remington’s chest. “Oh, Alpha! Evelyn, how could you do something so shameful?”

Bowen stammered, pointing at me. “She’s the one who seduced me! She said she was lonely and wanted me to stay. Then she stabbed herself for… for fun!”

Tears streamed down my face as I looked at Remington, shaking my head desperately. “I didn’t. It’s not what he’s saying. I swear.”

Jaycee lowered her hands, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. “We all saw it, Evelyn. Alpha even said he didn’t want to neglect you and came to check on you. How could you betray him like this?”

I ignored her, my eyes locked on Remington’s. “We’ve known each other for ten years. You know who I am. Please, believe me.”

But his expression was cold, his Alpha aura pressing down on me like a weight. “Evelyn, I thought I knew you. But today, I’m starting to think I never did.”

Just then, Fluffy ran to Jaycee, barking at her furiously.

She shrieked, clinging to Remington. “Alpha, I’m scared! Why is this filthy thing here?”

Tears welled in her eyes, and Remington, without hesitation, unsheathed his claws.

“No!” I screamed, but it was too late.

Fluffy let out a single, heart-wrenching yelp before collapsing to the floor, blood pooling beneath him.

The pain of losing him, combined with the betrayal, was too much. I felt *Aria* howl in agony as I coughed up blood, my vision fading to black.

The last thing I saw was Remington’s cold, distant gaze as I passed out.

The silver glass bit into my palm as I sawed through the restraints. Five years. Five years of planning this moment, memorizing guard rotations, stealing fragments of broken mirror during the weekly hose-downs. The storm outside Wolf's Bane Asylum screamed louder than the voices in my head—the ones that whispered I was already dead, that escape was just another form of torture. My wrists burned where the silver touched skin. I didn't care. Pain was an old friend now. The guard's footsteps echoed down the corridor. I pressed myself against the wall, every muscle trembling from malnutrition and years of wolfsbane injections. My wolf—Luna, she used to be called—hadn't spoken in so long I'd almost forgotten her voice.

I stood at the edge of the grand hall, my fingers trembling around the ceremonial silver goblet. Five years of practice had taught me how to move through these events like a ghost—seen but not truly present. The annual inter-pack alliance ceremony was the most important diplomatic event of the year, and as Luna of the Shadowmoon Pack, my role was simple: smile, nod, and reflect well on my Alpha. My Alpha. The words tasted bitter in my mind. Marcus Sterling was never truly mine, nor I his. The mate mark on my neck burned with phantom pain, a constant reminder of our fraudulent bond. "Luna Elena," a voice called, pulling me from my thoughts. "The Blackthorn delegation awaits your greeting." I moved forward, the weight of my ceremonial gown dragging behind me like chains. The visiting Alphas and Lunas stood in a semicircle, their eyes calculating as they assessed me—the famously quiet, submissive Luna of the powerful Shadowmoon Pack.

The freezing rain of the Silver Lake territory didn’t just soak you; it bit straight through to the marrow. I shifted back into my human form at the edge of the clearing, my knees buckling slightly as my feet hit the muddy earth. Steam rose from my naked skin, mingling with the metallic scent of fresh blood and the pine-heavy air. I was Valentina Ross, the Lead Tracker of this pack, and I had just spent three days in a blizzard hunting an elk that had strayed too close to the border. It was a kill that would feed the elders for a week, but right now, all I could feel was the throbbing gash on my thigh where a rogue branch had sliced me open miles ago. I dragged the carcass to the drop-off point for the Delta butchers, shivering violently. I needed warmth. I needed care. I needed my mate. “Oliver,” I whispered, stumbling toward our cabin.

The full moon bathed the clearing in silver light, casting an ethereal glow over the gathered pack members. Their faces blurred into a sea of expectant smiles as I stood beside Alexander, my heart thundering against my ribs. This was everything I'd dreamed of since I was a little girl—finding my fated mate, becoming Luna of a powerful pack, starting our forever. "Are you ready?" Alexander whispered, his breath warm against my ear. His eyes, the color of burnished amber, held mine with an intensity that made my knees weak. I nodded, unable to form words as the pack Elder stepped forward, his weathered hands raising toward the moon. "Under the watchful eye of the Moon Goddess, we gather to witness the sacred bond between Alpha Alexander Kane and his chosen mate, Victoria Sterling," the Elder's voice carried across the hushed clearing. "May their union strengthen the Shadowmoon Pack and bring forth powerful heirs." Alexander's fingers tightened around mine as we recited our vows. The traditional words flowed from my lips like honey, sweet promises of devotion and loyalty that I meant with every fiber of my being. When it came time for the marking, I tilted my head, exposing the vulnerable curve of my neck.

The thick cream envelope sat on my kitchen counter like a ticking bomb. The Moonrise Werewolf Academy logo gleamed in gold embossing, mocking me with its prestige. My hands trembled as I slid my finger under the seal, already knowing what I'd find inside. "Dear Mrs. Boyd," I read aloud, my voice hollow in the empty kitchen. "We regret to inform you that your daughter Emma's acceptance to our institution has been rescinded due to administrative reconsideration." The letter continued with polite, meaningless apologies, but my eyes locked on the final paragraph: "The available position has been offered to Jake Stevens, whose application was strengthened by an Alpha with exceptional healing credentials." My coffee mug hit the counter with a crack. "Exceptional healing credentials?" I whispered. "That's my husband they're talking about." Fury propelled me out the door. Twenty minutes later, I stood in the academy's marble lobby, the letter crumpled in my fist. "Mrs.
