Chapter 1

Violet's POV

"Where is the blood?" Alpha Kane roared as he jumped off the bed, forcing me out of my pretend sleep as I faked a yawn and stretched.

I knew this day would come. I'd anticipated it with dread, but no matter how many times I thought this moment over in my mind, it never really prepared me for this moment.

I could feel the blood rush in my head as I jumped out of bed, dragging the bedsheets to cover my naked body.

"What's going on?" I asked as my heart thumped in my ears.

"Give me that!" Alpha Kane dragged the bedsheet from my hold, exposing me to the harsh cold coming in through the windows. "Answer me, you whore! Why the fuck is there no blood?!" He wasn't asking. He was demanding.

With not only his voice, but also a tough authority that brought me to my knees.

I had three options. I could pretend to be as clueless as he was, but that opportunity had passed. Second, I could come up with a lie, and finally, I could get to my feet and run out of this mansion right now and ensure I'm never caught so I never have to tell them the truth.

The truth about how I'd done this same Dual Lotus sacrifice with a wolf when I was 18 and terribly sick. How I'd lost my virginity to save my life, how a wolf had offered himself, but I never saw him after that, neither do I know if he still exists.

"This was the plan you had with your lousy pack, right? Take advantage of my pack all in the name of-"

"My pack would never do that!" I immediately defended, even though he had technically just nailed the truth.

The whole pack knew about this, yet I was sent here instead of my sister to marry the fearsome king of Bloodbane pack for the sake of a promise our great grandparents made centuries ago.

And I was no longer a virgin, the very thing he was promised in return for aiding us and backing us up for the war that just passed.

"Oh really? Do you really think I wouldn't find out if I wanted to?" He neared me, his fangs getting bared out of anger and the uncontrollable switching of his eye colors, from his wolf green that shone through the room like emerald and the Alpha wolf piercing through my soul right now.

"I'm sorry, I really didn't know anything about it," I whimpered as I backed away. It was the only thing I could think to do, get away from this man. That was until my back hit the painted wall and I realized I was pressed between two hard places.

"Please," I pleaded as I started to sob.

I hated how weak I sounded. I hated that I had to sound this weak when I was also wronged and robbed of my choices. But for the sake of everyone back home, I would endure this.

Not because I was selfish and self-sacrificial, but because I had no other choice to. My father, the alpha of the pack, said to me as we laid his grandmother to rest just the day before I was shipped off to Bloodbane's pack as a bride for sale, "We have laid to rest the last person who has your back. So keep your witch blood in check and do us all a favor by never coming back. It's the least you can do for us," he'd said, and he was hundred percent right.

It's the least I could do for them.

So when Alpha Kane held my jaw and dangerously tipped my head to the side and said, "You have two options. You either leave this room and never show your face in my pack, or I call the security for fraud and you and your whole pack are razed to the ground." My breath hitched and I felt some iota of hatred for myself.

Because despite the danger at this moment, my body still reacted to him.

We might not be mates, but the love he showered my body was the most I'd ever gotten in my whole life, and I was ashamed to admit my body, my wolf, and my soul craved for more.

To be ravished like that again. "Are you even listening to me?"

"Hmm hmm," I nodded and exhaled back to the present. "Please don't burn down my pack," they would haunt me even in their death. "But I have one question. If you allow me to escape, wouldn't that cause even more issues?" I asked.

"You sure are a bold one for daring to negotiate with me," he said, but I wasn't feeling any bold, not with the tremors in my calves and core. "I can claim you ran away and that would be the end of it. No one dares question the alpha," he said with a flick of his finger. And I had no doubt about his words.

"Thank you very much, Alpha Kane," I said as I hurried towards the closet to find an outfit to wear, given how he'd shredded mine just before we climbed into bed.

"And just what are you doing?" He asked from behind me, making me shiver and drop the clothes in my hand.

"I need to wear something," I said.

"No, you don't need to wear anything. Leave this pack naked, I don't care. Just never show your face. After all, you've fucked others."

That was how I had no choice but to change into my wolf form and sprint out through the window and into the woods, running with everything like my life depended on it, because it did.

Alpha Kane's last words were, "If I set my eyes on you again, I'll make sure they are the last things you see before sending you to hell."

And for someone whose strength rivaled everyone else's and was called the alpha of death, I had no doubt he'd fulfilled that promise to millions of others in the past.

When I jumped out the window, I was working purely on adrenaline and didn't notice the sprain in my ankle, nor the fact that my pheromones were leaking and we were still underneath the auspicious hour of the blood moon.

This time was chosen for us to consummate the ceremony because it was taught that the goddess would bless our union, and even if we weren't mates, we could still be bound for life.

A twig snapped and echoed into the night. I froze, surprised at the echo, until I perked my ears and the sound of dangerous growling in the distance grew closer.

I needed to run, faster. But no matter how fast I tried, I felt surrounded, until I was in a circle I could no longer escape.

Other wolves. Rogues surrounded me, having caught up to my scent, and they were after me to seek companionship.

Neither my sprained ankle nor my poor luck could save me this night.

Their snarls surrounded me from all corners and their eyes glimmered in the dark, piercing like a predator watching his prey.

My wolf whimpered, feeling small and cornered, and all I could do was back away with my tail tucked in, until I felt something wet land on my rear, only to look up and see a massive wolf two times my size with a deep slash running across his left eye, salivating as he bared his fangs at me.

On the third day after the Alpha lost his memory, I asked him to sever our mate bond. He agreed instantly, as if it were the easiest decision in the world. A month later, he found me with his medical records in hand. His towering frame loomed over me, his broad shoulders casting a shadow. "We were expecting a pup," he said, his deep voice tinged with red, his Alpha aura heavy in the air. I nodded, my voice steady despite the storm inside me. "Yes, we were." The cold seeped into my bones as I stirred awake, my body aching against the frozen stone floor. My eyelids felt heavy, my throat raw from screaming for help that never came. The silver-lined walls of the dungeon glinted mockingly in the dim light, designed specifically to weaken werewolves like me. I tried to sit up, wincing as pain shot through my ribs. How long had I been here? Hours? Days? The windowless cell made it impossible to tell. "Finally awake, Omega?" I flinched at the voice, looking up to see Beta Marcus standing at the cell door. His expression was unreadable, but I knew him well enough to see the faint disgust in his eyes.

The full moon hung like a silver medallion in the night sky as I stood at the edge of the pack house balcony, watching our warriors gather below. The familiar pre-patrol energy filled the air—wolves stretching their limbs, some already half-shifted with amber eyes glowing in the darkness. I should have been down there with Nathan, as I had been every full moon for five years, but tonight he'd asked me to oversee the pack house security instead. "It's more important to have someone I trust here," he'd said, not meeting my eyes. I knew what he meant: someone he trusted but didn't need beside him. Someone useful but not essential. Someone who could be placed wherever convenient. I straightened my spine, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear as I reviewed the security protocols one last time. My wolf, Aria, paced restlessly within me, sensing my unease. *He'll come say goodbye before they leave,* I assured her, though the words felt hollow even in my thoughts.

The dawn light filtered through the heavy curtains of my father's chamber, casting long shadows across his gaunt face. Beta Ashford, once the strongest wolf in Silvermoon Pack, now lay withered against silk pillows, his breathing labored. The rare illness consuming him had stolen his vigor, leaving behind only a shell of the man who had raised me. "Victoria," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Come closer, daughter." I knelt beside his bed, taking his frail hand in mine. His skin felt like parchment, thin and cool to the touch. "Father, please rest. The healer said—" "The healer cannot save me." His amber eyes, though clouded with pain, fixed on mine with startling clarity. "My time grows short, Victoria. Before I join the Moon Goddess, I must see you secured." My chest tightened.

To an orphan like me, the Donovans’ approval was oxygen. I thought I was living a fairy tale as Ivan’s fiancée, finally finding a place to land. That illusion shattered the night I overheard my future father-in-law whisper behind a study door. "We can't keep paying Kayla forever. If this comes out, it ruins the merger." The name hung in the air like toxic smoke. Driven by a sickening gut feeling, I dug deeper. I found a tuition bill for a prestigious kindergarten for a boy named Leo—paid for by the Donovans. I disguised myself as a pest control worker and infiltrated the address on the bill. Inside the playroom of a massive mansion, I found the smoking gun. It wasn’t a receipt. It was a commissioned oil painting. It depicted my fiancé, Ivan, smiling with his arm around a beautiful woman, a young boy standing between them. The plaque read: *Our Happy Family - 2023.* They weren't just cheating; they were living a parallel life. They thought I was just the naive, grateful scholarship student who would never look too closely. They were wrong. At our lavish fifth-anniversary party, in front of five hundred of Manhattan's elite, Ivan waited for my loving toast. Instead, I signaled the AV booth. The giant screen behind us flickered to life. But it didn't show our wedding photos. It showed the painting. And then, I played the recordings.
