Chapter 2

# CHAPTER TWO

The morning sun filtered through the dusty dormitory blinds, casting golden stripes across my unpacked boxes. I ran my fingers over the embossed Astral Crest emblem on my student handbook—the tangible proof that I'd made it here despite everyone's doubts. My second day. A fresh start.

I was hanging the last of my clothes when a commotion erupted in the hallway—hushed whispers and shuffling feet. Before I could investigate, a familiar scent hit me like a physical blow. Cedar and rain. Kaelen.

My wolf whined, recognizing her mate even as I steeled myself against the bond that still hummed between us, raw and painful.

The knock came seconds later. Three sharp raps that made my heart stutter.

"Aria, please." His voice was ragged, desperate. "I know you're in there."

I froze, a sweater clutched in my trembling hands. How had he found me so quickly? I'd told no one where I was going.

"Go away, Kaelen," I called, hating how my voice betrayed me with its tremor.

"I can't." The door rattled as he leaned against it. "My wolf is going crazy without you. I haven't slept since you left."

Good, I thought viciously, even as tears pricked my eyes.

More whispers from the hallway. Other students gathering to witness the drama. My cheeks burned with humiliation.

I yanked open the door, intending to tell him off privately, but the sight of him knocked the breath from my lungs. Kaelen looked wrecked—his usually perfect hair disheveled, dark circles under his bloodshot amber eyes, his clothes rumpled as if he'd been sleeping in his car.

Before I could speak, he dropped to his knees in the middle of the hallway.

"Please," he whispered, reaching for my hands. I stepped back, keeping them out of reach. "What I did—sleeping with Elena—it was the biggest mistake of my life."

Gasps echoed from the growing audience in the hallway. My face flamed hotter.

"My wolf has been howling for you every minute," he continued, oblivious to our spectators. "I'll do anything, Aria. Anything to prove I'm worthy of a second chance."

The raw desperation in his voice tugged at something inside me, but I crushed it down. I'd spent years letting my family dictate my worth. I wouldn't let Kaelen's regret manipulate me now.

"Our mate bond is severed," I said, my voice flat and cold despite the lie. The bond couldn't be broken so easily, but he didn't need to know that. "In my heart, at least. If you truly respected me, you'd leave me alone."

His face crumpled. "Aria—"

I stepped back and slammed the door, leaning against it as my legs threatened to give way. Through the wood, I heard the whispers intensify.

"That's her? The one with the broken mate?"

"Did you see him begging? Pathetic."

"I heard he fucked her best friend..."

I pressed my palms against my eyes, willing the tears not to fall. I'd come here to escape, to prove myself. Instead, Kaelen had followed me, making me a spectacle before I'd even attended my first class.

---

The lecture hall for Advanced Werewolf Politics was intimidating—tiered seating facing a massive blackboard covered in territorial maps of the four Veridian Quadrants. I slipped into a seat in the middle row, painfully aware of the stares and whispers following me.

"This seat taken?"

I looked up to find Damon Ashford—the Alpha of Northspire—standing beside me, one eyebrow raised in question. My breath caught. I'd seen him from afar yesterday during orientation, but up close, he was even more striking—tall and lean, with sharp cheekbones and calculating gray eyes that seemed to see right through me.

"It's a free country," I managed, though the entire lecture hall was practically empty.

His lips quirked. "Hardly. It's four territories, each with distinct power structures and governance models." He settled beside me, his presence commanding the space. "Which is precisely why this class is so vital."

Throughout the lecture, Damon leaned close, offering insights that went beyond the professor's explanations. His knowledge of territorial dynamics was impressive, and he seemed genuinely interested in my opinions, drawing me into discussions that challenged my thinking.

"The Northspire approach emphasizes intellectual dominance over physical," he murmured as the professor discussed resource allocation. "Why fight for territory when you can simply outsmart your opponent into surrendering it?"

After class, he walked beside me through the courtyard, his hand occasionally brushing mine. Students parted before us, their expressions ranging from curiosity to envy.

"My private library in Northspire Tower has texts on territorial negotiation that aren't available in the academy archives," he said casually. "We should study together sometime."

His fingers lightly touched my lower back as we navigated around a fountain—a gesture that could be interpreted as courtesy but felt distinctly possessive.

"I've been researching mate bonds," he added, his voice deliberately casual. "Specifically, methods to completely sever unwanted connections. Fascinating subject."

I glanced at him sharply. Was this his way of offering help? Or staking a claim?

"I appreciate intellectual curiosity," I said carefully, "but some bonds aren't so easily broken."

His gray eyes gleamed. "Nothing worth having comes easily, Aria."

---

I returned to my dormitory that evening to find the door ajar. Alarm prickled along my spine as I pushed it open.

Destruction greeted me. My clothes strewn across the floor. Books torn. My acceptance letter—the one I'd retrieved from Kaelen's apartment and carefully smoothed out—ripped to confetti. And across my mirror, written in red lipstick: WHORE.

I stood frozen, staring at the devastation, when a soft knock came from behind me.

"Holy shit," a female voice breathed. "They really did a number on you."

I turned to find a petite girl with cropped black hair and multiple ear piercings surveying the damage.

"I'm Sage," she said, stepping inside without invitation. "Sage Nightfall. And you're Aria Blackwood, the virgin who's got all four Alphas in a frenzy."

"I don't—" I started, but she was already picking up scattered books.

"This is standard treatment," she explained, gathering torn pages. "Virgin wolves who attract Alpha attention get this welcome package courtesy of every jealous bitch hoping to catch an Alpha herself."

I knelt beside her, collecting shredded clothes. "I'm not trying to attract anyone."

Sage snorted. "Doesn't matter. You're untouched. Unclaimed. That makes you a prize." She glanced at the lipstick message. "Especially with your ex-mate making a scene this morning. Now everyone knows you're available."

As we cleaned, Sage explained the brutal politics of Astral Crest—the alliances, the betrayals, the hierarchy that placed virgin wolves at both the top and bottom of the social ladder.

"You need to watch out for the Lunar Dominance Trial," she warned, helping me remake my bed. "Ancient tradition where Alphas can formally battle for the right to claim an unmated virgin. It's barbaric, but the academy still honors it."

My stomach twisted. "They can't force me to mate with someone."

"No," she agreed, "but they can make your life hell if you refuse the victor." She paused, studying me. "And there's something else you should know. Lucian Ravencrest has been asking questions about you."

The name sent a chill through me. The Shadow Alpha. The most feared of the four rulers.

"What kind of questions?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Sage's expression grew serious. "The kind that mean he's watching you. And when the Shadow Alpha takes interest in someone, they either become his greatest asset..." She glanced nervously at the door. "Or they disappear entirely."
