Chapter 2

The full moon hung low and heavy over the forest clearing. Forty wolves circled the perimeter, their breath misting in the cold air. I stood at the edge of the treeline, still in human form, watching them.

I couldn't shift. My wolf was there—I could feel her presence like a weight behind my ribs—but she wouldn't surface. Seventeen years of suppression had locked her so deep that even the pull of the full moon couldn't drag her out. Every other wolf in the pack had transformed within seconds of entering the clearing. I was the only one left standing on two legs.

The only Luna who couldn't run with her own pack.

I felt their eyes on me. Some curious. Some pitying. A few openly mocking. I kept my chin level and my hands loose at my sides. I had learned long ago not to show weakness.

Then Hadlee dropped.

She was mid-stride, her pale grey wolf weaving between two larger males, when she let out a theatrical howl and collapsed. Her body hit the ground hard, limbs splayed, chest heaving. The sound she made was somewhere between a whimper and a scream.

Every wolf in the clearing froze.

Hadlee's wolf thrashed in the dirt, clawing at the ground, her muzzle twisted in exaggerated agony. Pack members swarmed her immediately. Someone howled for Marcus. Another wolf nudged her flank, trying to get her to stand.

I didn't move. I watched from the treeline, twenty feet away, and I knew exactly what this was.

Marcus arrived in seconds. His massive black wolf tore through the clearing, scattering smaller wolves in his wake. He skidded to a halt beside Hadlee's trembling form and shifted back in a violent surge of cracking bone and reforming muscle. He dropped to one knee beside her, his hand on her shoulder. "What happened?"

Hadlee's wolf shifted back. She lay on the ground, naked and gasping, her hand clutching her chest. Tears streaked her face. "Her aura," she choked out, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Josie's aura—it's broken. Unstable. My wolf can't handle it. It's like—like she's poisoning the bond."

Sixty wolves turned to look at me.

I stood perfectly still. My wolf stirred inside me, a low growl building in the back of my throat, but she didn't surface. She couldn't.

Marcus rose slowly. His eyes locked on mine. His jaw was tight, his shoulders squared. The Alpha aura rolled off him in waves, thick and suffocating. He crossed the clearing in five long strides and stopped three feet in front of me.

"Apologize," he said. His voice was low and cold. "On your knees. Now."

The clearing went absolutely silent.

I looked at him. At the man I had spent nine years building a life with. The man I had sacrificed everything for. The man whose pack I had strengthened with alliances he didn't even know existed.

I said, "No."

His jaw clenched. His hands curled into fists at his sides. For a moment, I thought he might use the Alpha tone again—force me to my knees in front of everyone. But he didn't. Instead, he turned to face the assembled pack.

"Effective immediately, Josie is relieved of all Luna duties." His voice carried across the clearing, sharp and final. "Hadlee will assume all ceremonial and administrative responsibilities until further notice."

Behind him, Hadlee rose from the ground. Not a scratch on her. Not a bruise. She wiped the tears from her face and curtsied to Marcus, her voice breaking with gratitude. "Thank you, Alpha. I won't let you down."

I didn't flinch. I held Marcus's gaze for three full seconds. Then I turned and walked back toward the pack house, spine straight, chin level.

The mate bond on my neck burned cold.

---

The next morning, I walked into the pack's administrative office and stopped in the doorway.

Hadlee was sitting at my desk.

She had rearranged everything. My files were stacked in a messy pile on the floor. My chair—the one I had sat in every morning for nine years—was pushed back, and Hadlee's legs were crossed on top of the desk. Three Omega pack members stood in front of her, heads bowed, listening as she rattled off orders.

She looked up when I entered. Her smile was bright and victorious. "Oh—you can go, Josie. I've got everything covered here."

One of the Omegas, a young girl named Mira who I had personally trained, glanced at me. Her eyes were wide and apologetic. She mouthed, *I'm sorry.*

I looked at the desk. My desk. Where I had managed Ironvale's supply routes, alliance correspondence, and pack welfare records for nine years. Where I had quietly held this pack together while Marcus took credit for every success.

I said nothing.

I walked to the filing cabinet, opened the top drawer, and removed the folder containing the current week's border patrol schedules. I tucked it under my arm and turned to leave.

Hadlee called after me, her voice sharp. "Those are pack property."

I closed the door behind me.

---

I went to the nursery.

It was a small room off the east corridor, hidden behind a locked door that only I had the key to. I had been building it in secret for over a year. Pup blankets in soft grey and white. Hand-carved wooden toys stacked in a cedar chest. A small name-plaque mounted above the window, reading *our little wolf* in my own handwriting.

I had planned to bring Marcus here on our ninth anniversary. To tell him I was ready to start a family. To show him this room as proof that I still believed in our future.

I sat on the floor with my back against the cedar chest. My fingers traced the carved letters of the plaque. The wood was smooth under my thumb.

My wolf was silent.

The mate bond on my neck was the temperature of winter stone.

I sat there for a long time, staring at the empty room, and I thought about all the things I had given up. All the things I had buried. All the things I had built for a man who couldn't even see me.

And I wondered how much longer I could keep doing this.
