Regretting What She Got
Chapter 4
Polly tossed the DNA report onto the table and took a seat at the center table. Griselda's eyes were unfocused as she sat beside Polly, mumbling intelligibly.
"Mason is my son. That explains why I've always felt this inexplicable urge to pamper him. My son!"
Danielle's eyes were teary as she reached out toward Mason to hug him.
However, Mason couldn't even be bothered to mask his disdain for her as he stepped aside to evade her touch.
"Before we get to the bottom of this, Ms. Danielle, I hope you can preserve your decorum. Keeping your distance will benefit both of us."
The people gathered there had been let into a huge scandal.
"A real-life case of swapped babies! Even the powerful Campbell family failed to realize this huge mistake?"
"I think that it's impossible that the hospital would cause such a mix-up. It must've been someone's doing."
"Mr. Campbell isn't a stupid man. There's no way he'd ask his staff to swap his kid out, right? People probably know what's up."
"It's a classic case of a nanny wanting more than what she's been given. She wants to turn a wealthy heir into her grandson with nothing more than an apology!"
They'd destroyed Griselda. If the Campbell family took her back, it would only disgust them. Yet, who would be willing to allow their servant's son to inherit the family's wealth?
Everyone was curious. What would be my decision?
"In that case, we'll swap the children. Although the Campbells are loaded, we're not selfless to the point where we'll raise someone else's kid."
Everyone's mouths fell open.
The Jacksons were ecstatic. They were celebrating their win before it had even occurred.
Zachary had always kept his calm in such situations. However, anger warped his features, an inappropriate reaction to the current situation.
"We've raised Mason for nearly twenty years and now you're abandoning him just because of what Polly said? Are you heartless, Daisy?"
I ignored him. "Mason is Danielle's child. I did a DNA test on him a long time ago. I knew he wasn't mine from the day we brought him home."
Everyone was properly gaping at us at this point.
"Is Daisy mad? She knew he wasn't her son but pampered him for many years."
"This piece of gossip is getting more intriguing by the minute. Haven't the Jacksons saved her life before?"
Cold sweat beaded on Zachary's forehead, but in a valiant attempt to salvage his reputation, he insisted, "Daisy, you must've remembered mistakenly. After the premature birth, you and the baby were both weak. You even got postnatal depression.
"I've seen how well you've treated Mason through the years. How could he not be your biological son? Don't make a scene. Today should be a day of celebration."
Zachary's tone softened as he spoke. He seemed to be a little afraid of me.
Why would I play into his desires? I projected our DNA report onto the big screen. The date was the date Mason was born.
Indisputable evidence had been presented. Zachary could no longer muster up the will to continue making excuses.
"Oh dear! Mason really turned out not to be Daisy's son!"
"I heard that Griselda was abused before she left the Campbells. How could Daisy watch it happen without interfering?"
"The only heir to the Campbell family has turned into a mess. Mr. Campbell would probably have a hard time explaining it to his elders."
The gossiping voices grew louder and louder. Zachary awoke from his stupor and scolded me, "Daisy, you evil bitch! What has our child done to warrant you watching him suffer without speaking out? Are you happy with what happened to her?"
Guilt, disappointment, and sadness flitted across his face. He played the part of a gentle father extremely well.
While everyone was criticizing me, Griselda had begun tussling with Polly. "I've wanted to do this for ages, you evil hag!"
A scream pierced the air as the two of them tumbled out of the window.
Everyone hadn't expected this to happen. However, I was relieved by this development.
