Chapter 5

POV: Ellie

The front door clicked open at one seventeen in the morning.

I sat on the wooden stool at the edge of the kitchen island, hands resting flat against the cold quartz. The lights were off, save for the pale glow of the range hood filtering across the clean countertops.

Muffled voices drifted from the entryway.

"Careful with her shoes," Luke whispered, his tone low and tender. "I've got her shoulders."

"Thank you," Madison murmured, her voice tight with exhaustion. "I don't know what we would have done tonight without you, Luke. Seriously."

"Don't worry about it. Go get some rest. I'll lock up."

Soft footsteps carried Madison down the breezeway toward the converted garage. A door clicked shut.

Luke walked into the kitchen, unbuttoning the cuffs of his slate-gray wool sweater. He reached toward the refrigerator, yawned, and then froze as his eyes adjusted to the dim light.

He flinched, his hand dropping from the handle. "Jesus, Ellie. You scared the hell out of me. Why are you sitting in the dark?"

"Waiting for you," I said.

My voice was quiet, even, devoid of the tremor that used to accompany any late-night tension between us.

Luke rubbed the back of his neck, his shoulders slumping in an exaggerated display of fatigue. "I am so, so sorry, babe. You have no idea what kind of night it's been. The regional director wouldn't let anyone leave until we mapped out the third-quarter projections, and then my phone died on the drive back. Did you eat?"

I looked at him. The gray sweater was rumpled at the elbows. A faint scent drifted across the island between us—cold sea air, garlic butter, and the sweet vanilla mist Madison sprayed in her hair every morning.

"How was the seafood at Point Cove?" I asked.

The silence that followed was sharp enough to draw blood.

Luke’s mouth remained parted by a fraction of an inch. His eyes flickered, the easy, practiced excuse dying in his throat before it could form.

"What?" he managed.

"Point Cove," I repeated, keeping my gaze locked on his face. "The Cliff House. Maya had the chocolate dessert with whipped cream. Madison posted a picture an hour ago."

Luke stared at me. The momentary shock on his features didn't dissolve into guilt. Instead, I watched the subtle, familiar hardening around his jaw as he shifted from defense to offense.

He let out a short, dismissive breath and shook his head.

"Ellie, it's not what you think."

"What do I think, Luke?"

He stepped closer to the island, leaning both palms against the edge of the counter, towering over me just enough to establish his usual authority.

"Madison had a full-blown panic attack around five o'clock," he said, speaking slowly, deliberately, as if reasoning with an unreasonable child. "Richard’s attorney served her with an emergency motion to freeze their joint checking account. She was completely hysterical. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't drive, and Maya was terrified, crying her eyes out in the backseat."

"So you took comp time from work," I said.

"I had to calm her down!" Luke snapped, his voice rising before he remembered the sleeping child down the hall and dropped it to a harsh whisper. "What was I supposed to do, Ellie? Leave her hyperventilating in an empty parking lot? She needed to get away from the city. She needed fresh air. I drove them out to the coast so she could clear her head."

"And the dinner?"

"We were already an hour away, and Maya hadn't eaten since noon," he said, throwing his hands up in disbelief. "What kind of monster wouldn't buy a six-year-old dinner when she's starving? You're interrogating me like I committed a crime."

"You lied to me," I said.

"I didn't lie to you—"

"You texted me at six forty-five and said you were stuck in a corporate meeting."

Luke flinched slightly, but he didn't back down. "Because I knew how you'd react! I knew you'd get rigid and insecure and start overthinking things, exactly like you're doing right now. I was trying to spare your feelings."

"Spare my feelings," I said, letting the words roll across my tongue like dry gravel.

"Yes, Ellie!" He pulled a stool back with a sharp scrape of wood and dropped into it, scrubbing both hands over his face. "Look at yourself. You're sitting in the pitch dark at one in the morning, stalking Madison's social media, looking for reasons to be furious."

"Today is October twelfth, Luke."

He paused, his hands still hovering near his temples. A brief flicker of uncertainty crossed his brow, then vanished beneath a layer of pure irritation.

"Okay?" he said defensively. "And?"

"It's our fourth wedding anniversary."

The kitchen grew heavier, the silence stretching out until the low hum of the refrigerator sounded deafening.

For half a second, I thought I saw a crack in his armor. His throat moved as he swallowed. But the crack sealed over almost instantly, replaced by that cold, self-righteous armor he always wore when he refused to be the villain.

"Ellie, it's a calendar date," he said, his tone dripping with exasperation. "A date. You can celebrate an anniversary on a Friday or a Saturday when people aren't swamped. Madison is in the middle of a literal crisis. Her entire life has been torn apart. Her husband threw her onto the street with a small child."

"And so our marriage takes the backseat."

"It's not a competition!" Luke leaned forward, his eyes flashing with anger. "Why do you insist on turning this into a contest between you and a woman who has nothing? You have a house. You have a secure job. You have a husband who comes home to you every night. She has *nothing* right now, Ellie. Nothing."

"I made braised short ribs," I said softly, looking past him to the empty stove. "I bought the Cabernet we drank in Sonoma. I waited until ten o'clock with the candles lit."

"And I'm sorry you wasted a meal, okay?" he snapped, the apology sounding like an insult. "If you had just answered your phone instead of sulking—"

"I called you at nine twenty. It went straight to voicemail."

"Because my battery was low! Jesus, Ellie, stop keeping score!" Luke stood up abruptly, pacing two steps toward the sink before spinning around to face me. "You’ve never been this kind of petty woman. Since when are you so small-minded?"

The room seemed to drop ten degrees.

*You've never been this kind of petty woman.*

There it was.

The brass ring he always held out for me to jump through. The neat, suffocating little box where I was supposed to tuck away my pride, my hurt, and my boundaries just to earn the title of the good wife. The cool wife. The sensible, selfless woman who smiled while her husband spent his chivalry, his money, and his affection on another woman.

For four years, that phrase had been my leash. Every time he used it, I would swallow my anger, apologize for making a fuss, and redouble my efforts to be understanding.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look down at my hands.

Slowly, carefully, I slid off the barstool and stood up.

I picked up the dry dish towel from the counter, folded it precisely in half, and set it down beside the sink.

Then I looked him dead in the eye.

"Then what kind of woman am I supposed to be, Luke?"

My voice didn't waver. It didn't carry a shred of heat, or sorrow, or tears. It was completely, terrifyingly flat.

Luke opened his mouth to deliver another fast, cutting justification, but nothing came out.

His lips stayed parted, hovering over words that suddenly refused to materialize. He looked at my face, expecting the usual moisture in my eyes, the familiar trembling of my lower lip, the slight duck of my chin that signaled I was about to apologize for being difficult.

There was nothing.

No hurt. No jealousy. No desperate plea for him to choose me.

Just a blank, icy wall staring back at him.

Luke shifted his weight from one foot to the other. For the first time since he had dragged Madison Vance through our front door three weeks ago, his confidence wavered. A knot of genuine unease tightened across his forehead.

"Ellie..." he began, his voice dropping an octave, reaching out with one hand to touch my arm. "Come on. Don't be like this. You know what I meant."

I took one step backward.

His fingers brushed empty air, closing around nothing.

Luke’s hand froze mid-reach, suspended in the space where I used to stand. He stared at me, his chest rising and falling in shallow, uneven breaths, looking at his wife as if she had suddenly turned into a complete stranger.

The invisible tether that had bound me to his approval didn't just snap.

It evaporated into the cold dark of the room, leaving him reaching for a ghost.
