Chapter 2

That evening, just as I lay down on my bed, I received a call from my boyfriend, Jarred Russo.

He said to me without mercy, "Let's break up, Miranda. I'm tired of this. Don't come bothering me anymore."

I listened to his voice expressionlessly. After he finished speaking, I could faintly hear a woman's soft laughter in the background.

Although I knew whose voice it was, I still pretended to be shocked. "Are you cheating on me? Who are you with right now? Jarred, you can't do this to me."

The angrier I sounded, the more amused he seemed.

"I'll be honest with you. I was only with you because you could get me a referral to your company. Now that I've achieved my goal, I don't want to force myself to stay with you anymore."

So that was it. Because my resume was quite impressive, I was hired by a major company right after graduating from college. Later, after I established myself at the company, I helped both Jarred and Kate get hired through internal referrals.

"Stop pestering us, Miranda. We're going to be rich soon. We won't be in the same class as you anymore.

"Our circles are different, so why force yourself to fit in? Let's just leave it at that."

Kate had taken the phone and spoke to me.

"You two? You actually betrayed me!" I gasped, sounding completely shocked.

This made both of them burst into laughter.

I took the opportunity to say, "I'd like to see how well you two do without me. You just bought a crappy, old house. What's so great about that?"

"You'll find out soon enough. You're just an ordinary office worker. How could you ever compete with me?"

After hanging up, I let out a cold laugh. How utterly foolish. In this law-abiding society, if such a large sum of money really fell from the sky, could it escape the police's attention?

The next day, I went to work as usual and saw Kate and Jarred both go to the manager's office to resign. Faced with such sudden applications, our manager, Hank Johnson, was somewhat puzzled and tried to persuade them to stay, but Kate arrogantly refused.

"Sorry, Hank, but I just came into some money. It's not much, just a few million dollars, so working isn't necessary for me anymore."

Hank almost wondered if he had misheard, and the surrounding colleagues immediately gathered around.

"Kate, are you daydreaming? Where'd you even get that much money? Did you rob a bank?"

"Did you win the lottery? How did you pick the numbers? Is there a trick? Teach me!"

"You're joking, right? You're talking out of your ass. This is hilarious."

When she heard these flattering or opposing voices, Kate decided to show them what was happening. "How about this? Come to my new house in three days, and you'll see for yourselves."

She then directly sent the address to the work group chat. Upon seeing how determined she was, Hank couldn't say much more and approved both of their resignation applications.

While packing up, Kate noticed the branded bag on my desk and immediately exploded. "How can you afford that?"

After a few seconds, she realized something. "Oh, I get it now. You deliberately bought a fake to impress people, trying to outdo me.

"I suggest you give up. There's no need to pretend. A canvas bag worth a few dollars would suit you better."

I rolled my eyes and brought my bag right up to her face. "Open your damn eyes and look carefully. How could a fake have stitching this good?

"I just bought it from the boutique yesterday. Do you want me to show you the payment record?"
