Chapter 1

The air rushed into Leah’s lungs with a violent, burning gasp, like a drowning woman breaking the surface of a frozen lake.

She bolted upright, her hands instantly flying to her chest. Her fingers clawed frantically through the fabric of her emerald silk nightgown, searching for the sticky, warm rush of blood, the ragged tear of a bullet hole, the shattered bone from a three-story plunge onto wet asphalt.

I’m dead, her mind screamed. I died in the rain, choking on my own blood while Tristan—

"If you are finished with your theatrics, Leah, the pen is right in front of you."

The voice was like a bucket of ice water poured directly over her raw nerves. It was deep, velvet-edged, and vibrating with a familiar, dangerous undercurrent of absolute control.

Leah froze. Her frantic breathing hitched in her throat as her eyes adjusted to the warm, amber glow of the room. This wasn't the cold, concrete alleyway behind Julian’s estate. There was no rain. No scent of cheap copper and burning rubber. Instead, the air was thick with the scent of expensive sandalwood, aged leather, and high-end masculine cologne. She was sitting on a plush, silver-gray king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets. The room was sprawling and familiar, bounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the glittering, neon-lit skyline of the city’s financial district.

It was Tristan’s master bedroom.

Slowly, her trembling hand reached out toward the nightstand, where a sleek, black smartphone lay. She tapped the screen. The digital clock glowed back at her, sending a jolt of sheer electricity through her veins.

October 14, 2023. 11:45 PM.

Three years ago.

Leah’s breath hitched as she gazed at the time.

"We don't have all night," a sharp voice cut through her spiraling thoughts.

Leah snapped her head toward the center of the room. Sitting behind a massive, custom-built mahogany desk was Tristan.

Seeing him alive sent a physical ache through her chest. In her past life, she had spent the last two years of their arranged marriage calling him a tyrant, an unfeeling monster, and a cold-blooded dictator. She had loathed the very sight of his perfectly tailored charcoal suits, his flawless, angular jawline, and those piercing, obsidian eyes that seemed to read her innermost secrets. She had believed every single lie Julian and Bianca whispered in her ear, painting Tristan as the architect of her misery.

Yet, when Julian’s bullet had torn through her chest on that balcony, it was Tristan who had breached the doors. It was Tristan who had thrown his own body over hers, taking a secondary round to the shoulder, his hands trembling with a terrifying vulnerability as he desperately tried to stanch her bleeding. His final words to her hadn't been an indictment of her betrayal, but a broken, choked confession: I’m sorry I couldn't protect you. I’ve always loved you, Leah.

And she had realized his love only as the light left her eyes.

Now, he sat across from her, looking impossibly, beautifully alive. His jaw was tightly clenched, a small muscle ticking near his ear, a telltale sign that he was at the absolute limit of his patience. Flanking him were two older men in sharp, high-society legal suits. Mr. Vance and Mr. Sterling, the senior partners of Tristan's premier corporate law firm. On the dark wood of the desk lay a thick, crisp stack of legal documents, topped by a heavy, platinum Montblanc pen.

The un-amended divorce papers.

Leah's stomach dropped as her memories locked into place. She remembered this night with brutal clarity. In her first life, she had spent three weeks throwing screaming tantrums, smashing Tristan's expensive crystal decanters, and staging public hunger strikes to force him into signing a dissolution of their marriage. Julian had convinced her that once she was free from Tristan, they could merge her family’s residual trust assets and build a life together.

This was the exact night she had proudly signed away her matrimonial rights, taken a measly, insulted lump-sum settlement, and walked right into the spider's web Julian had spun for her. By signing those papers, she had handed Julian the legal leverage he needed to infiltrate Tristan’s tech empire and bleed it dry.

"Mrs. Hampton," Mr. Vance spoke up, his tone perfectly polite but dripping with thinly veiled condescension. "As per your explicit demands, Mr. Hampton has agreed to all of your terms. There will be no contest regarding the division of assets. You are receiving the downtown penthouse, the European accounts, and the immediate termination of the co-habitation clause. All we require is your signature on page twenty-four."

Leah didn't say a word. She merely sat there, staring at Tristan.

Tristan leaned back in his leather executive chair, crossing one long leg over the other. His expression was an unreadable mask of pure granite, but his dark eyes bore into her, heavy with a mixture of profound exhaustion and deep-seated bitterness.

"Leah," Tristan said, his voice dropping an octave, cutting through the lawyer's polite drone. "Sign it. You’ve fought for this for six months. I’m tired of the noise in my house."

"You truly want me to sign this, Tristan?" Leah asked, her voice remarkably steady as she swung her legs out of the bed.

Tristan’s eyes flashed with narrow suspicion. "Don't pretend you need to contemplate it now. You practically brought a sledgehammer to my office last week demanding these exact pages. Are you going to throw another tantrum, or are we final appointment tonight?"

"People change their minds," Leah murmured, walking slowly toward the desk. Every step felt like she was rewriting the fabric of time itself.

"Not you," Tristan countered coldly, his hands resting on the armrests of his chair, fingers tensing. "You don't change your mind, Leah. You change your weapons. What is it this time? Do you want a larger percentage of the tech shares? Or did your father tell you to squeeze a bit more out of my logistics division before you walk out the door?"

"Mr. Hampton, if I may," Mr. Vance interrupted, sliding a gold-rimmed pair of glasses down his nose. "The current layout heavily favors Mrs. Hampton. To adjust the corporate equity distribution at this stage would require rewriting the entire third annex. It would take weeks."

"I am aware of what it favors, Vance," Tristan snapped, never breaking eye contact with Leah. "I asked her a question. Speak, Leah. You've been screaming for my blood for half a year. Why are you quiet now?"

Leah stopped right in front of the mahogany surface, looking down at the legal document that had marked the beginning of her execution in the past life. She looked at the platinum pen.

"I am quiet because I am listening," Leah said softly. "And I'm realizing how blind I’ve been."

Mr. Sterling cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable with the sudden change in atmosphere. He slid the document a fraction of an inch closer to her. "Right there at the bottom of page twenty-four, please, Mrs. Hampton. Once your signature is verified, my firm will file the decree with the family court first thing tomorrow morning. You will be legally single by noon."

"Legally single," Leah repeated, her fingers brushing the cool metal of the Montblanc pen. She didn't pick it up. Instead, she laid her palm flat over the center of the contract, feeling the crisp, heavy parchment underneath. "And entirely unprotected."

Tristan’s jaw tightened further. "Unprotected? You are walking away with a settlement that could fund three generations of your family's vanity projects. Don't play the victim in a divorce you engineered."

"Is there an issue with the clause regarding the European accounts, Mrs. Hampton?" Mr. Vance asked, his brow furrowing as he pulled out a secondary folder. "We can review the liquid asset breakdown again if you feel the immediate cash transfer is insufficient."

"The terms are exactly as your personal counsel requested," Mr. Sterling added, his tone growing impatient. "We spent three weeks in arbitration with your lawyers to ensure you got exactly what you wanted. Mr. Hampton did not contest a single line."

"I know he didn't," Leah said, her voice catching for a split second as a wave of intense guilt washed over her. She looked at Tristan, noting the faint dark circles under his eyes, the subtle tension in his broad shoulders. He was working eighteen-hour days to launch his company's new AI mainframe, all while dealing with her manufactured domestic warfare. "He didn't contest it because he wanted to give me what I asked for. Even if what I asked for was my own destruction."

Tristan let out a sharp, cynical breath, leaning forward. His shadow fell across the desk, commanding and suffocating. "If you are going to demand more money, Leah, save your breath. My patience has a financial ceiling, and you’ve reached it tonight. Sign the papers or don't, but stop the performance."

Leah let out a soft, breathy laugh, not one of mockery, but of pure, unadulterated relief. "I don't want your money, Tristan."

"Then what do you want?" Tristan hissed, his eyes burning into hers. "More control over the tech shares? A public apology broadcasted to the press to salvage your reputation? What is the price for your signature tonight?"

"I don't want a single cent," Leah said, her eyes locked onto his. "And I don't want a divorce."

The room went entirely still. Mr. Vance froze mid-gesture, his pen hovering in the air. Mr. Sterling blinked rapidly, looking between the married couple as if he had suddenly lost the ability to speak English.

Tristan didn't blink. His expression remained carved from stone, but his dark eyes narrowed into deadly slits. "What did you just say?"

"I said, the divorce is off," Leah announced clearly.

Before anyone could move or intervene, Leah grabbed the thick stack of divorce papers in both hands. With a sharp, violent snap of her wrists, she tore the first five pages straight down the middle.

The sound of ripping paper cut through the silent room like a gunshot.

"What on earth—" Mr. Vance stammered, standing up so fast his leather briefcase slid off his lap, scattering blank legal forms across the floor.

"Mrs. Hampton!" Mr. Sterling gasped, his hands flying to his mouth. "What are you doing? That is an official corporate-vetted instrument!"

Leah didn't stop. She folded the thick stack and tore it again, and then again, her movements frantic, deliberate, and fiercely unyielding. She ripped the ironclad, multi-million-dollar divorce agreement into dozens of jagged, useless shreds, letting the white pieces flutter through the air like a mock snowstorm, scattering across the dark mahogany desk and onto the expensive Persian rug below.

"The divorce is off," Leah repeated, tossing the remaining scraps of paper directly into the small wastebasket beside the desk with a satisfying thud. She turned to the two stunned lawyers, her expression completely composed, her posture mimicking the high-society matriarch she was born to be. "Gentlemen, thank you for your time tonight, but your services regarding this matter are no longer required. You may bill my personal account for the hours wasted. Good night."

"Mr. Hampton?" Mr. Vance stammered, looking at Tristan like a man who had just watched a ghost materialize in front of him. "Sir, what do you want us to do? This contract took weeks of intensive negotiation. The board has already been briefed on the impending restructuring—"

"Leave," Tristan commanded. His voice wasn't loud. It was barely above a whisper, yet it carried an absolute, terrifying authority that made the air in the room instantly grow colder.

"But sir, the filing fees and the non-disclosure agreements—" Mr. Sterling tried to interject, his face flushing red.

"I said, leave us," Tristan repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal frequency. He didn't look at the lawyers. His dark eyes were locked entirely on Leah, heavy with an intense, suffocating mask of absolute suspicion.

The lawyers didn't need to be told a third time. They scrambled, throwing their remaining folders into their briefcases, bowing hastily, and practically running out of the master suite. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them with a definitive, heavy snap, leaving Leah and Tristan entirely alone in the sprawling room.

The silence returned, thick, volatile, and charged with an explosive energy. The scraps of paper lay between them like the debris of a bloody battlefield.

Leah took a deep breath, stepping around the desk to close the distance between them. She wanted to touch him. She wanted to assure herself that he was warm, that he was real, that she hadn't hallucinated his survival across the boundaries of death. "Tristan, I know you're angry, and I know you don't trust me, but—"

Tristan exploded out of his chair with a terrifying, fluid speed.

Before Leah’s brain could even process the movement, he bridged the gap between them. His hand shot out, his long, powerful fingers wrapping around her waist like a band of solid iron. With a single, effortless surge of strength, he hoisted her backward, slamming her lower back against the edge of the heavy mahogany desk.

Leah gasped as her breath was knocked out of her, her hands instinctively flying to his broad shoulders to steady herself against his sudden, overwhelming weight.

Tristan leaned in, crowding her completely, pinning her body between his massive frame and the hard wood of the desk. His face was mere inches from hers, so close she could feel the hot, rapid brush of his breath against her lips. His jaw was locked, his eyes burning with an intense, predatory fury that made her pulse spike. His grip on her waist tightened, his fingers digging into the emerald silk of her nightgown with a force that bordered on painful, yet it was the most grounding, beautiful sensation she had ever felt.

"What kind of game are you playing, Leah?" Tristan hissed, his voice vibrating with a lethal blend of rage and profound distrust. He tilted his head, his eyes raking over her face, searching for a tell, a smirk, a sign of deception. "Tearing up the papers? Dismissing my legal team? What is this? A new psychological tactic to delay the proceedings?"

"It’s not a game, Tristan," Leah whispered, her heart hammering violently against his chest.

"Don't lie to me!" Tristan roared, the sound echoing off the high ceilings of the bedroom. His dark eyes flashed with an unhinged intensity. "Did Julian tell you to do this? Did your pathetic childhood sweetheart convince you that if you play hard to get, I’ll get desperate? Did he tell you that if you stay in this house a little longer, you can leak the remaining security codes for my tech launch? Is that what this sudden change of heart is? A tactical strike from inside my own bed?"

"Julian has nothing to do with this," Leah said, looking directly into his furious, pained eyes. She didn't flinch from his anger; instead, she tightened her fingers on his shoulders, leaning into his touch despite the iron grip he held on her waist. "I am done with Julian. I am done with the lies. I am done with the fights."

"You expect me to believe that?" Tristan laughed, a dark, humorless, mocking sound that cut right to her soul. "Yesterday you told me you couldn't stand the sight of my face. Yesterday you swore you would see me ruined in court. Tonight you're tearing up legal documents and looking at me like... like you actually care if I live or die."

"Because I do care, Tristan," Leah said, her voice trembling but fierce, tears of raw grief and determination pricking the corners of her eyes. "I almost made the biggest mistake of my life. I am not leaving this house. I am not leaving you."

Tristan’s gaze narrowed to deadly, razor-sharp slits, his breath hot against her lips as his grip tightened until she could barely breathe. "I don't know what kind of trap you and Julian are setting, Leah. But if you think a little compliance and a fake tear will make me lower my guard, you are dead wrong."

"Then don't lower it," Leah countered, matching his fierce intensity, her green eyes flashing with a newfound strength. "Keep your guard up. Watch me every single second. Hire investigators. Put cameras in the rooms. Do whatever you have to do. But I am done running. If you want me out of this marriage, Tristan, you’re going to have to destroy me yourself."
