Chapter 3

The anesthetic flowed into Sabrina's veins.

Chloe watched, her face a mask of cold satisfaction, as her tormentor sank deeper into unconsciousness. A faint, chilling smile touched her lips.

She turned to the doctor, who was huddled in a corner, shaking so hard his teeth chattered.

"Do you know what she hired you to do to me?" Chloe asked, her voice quiet but carrying the weight of a death sentence.

"I-I don't know," he stammered, his eyes wide with terror. "It was just a minor procedure! A dermabrasion, she said!"

Chloe picked up a scalpel from the steel tray, its edge gleaming under the bright light. She let him see it. "Now," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper, "you're going to perform that 'minor procedure' on her."

The doctor's legs gave out. He slid to the floor, a puddle of terrified, blubbering flesh. "No, please! I can't! I'm a doctor!"

"You stopped being a doctor when you agreed to take her money," Chloe said flatly. She walked over to the counter where Sabrina's purse lay, took out her phone, and tossed it to the doctor. "Unlock it. Use her thumb."

His hands trembled so badly he could barely press Sabrina's limp thumb to the sensor. The phone unlocked.

It took Chloe less than ten seconds to find the encrypted chat history. The messages were all there, damning and explicit.

Sabrina: Make sure you scar her face. Deep enough that no plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills can fix it.

Dr. Evans: That will cost extra. It's a significant risk.

Sabrina: Money is not an issue. Just ruin her.

Chloe shoved the phone screen into the doctor's face. "Still want to tell me you didn't know?" she hissed. "You're an accomplice. You'll go to prison for life."

She laid out his options with chilling clarity. "One: you do exactly what you were paid to do, but on her. I walk out of here, and this never happened. Two: I call the police right now, give them this phone, and you can explain to a jury why you were about to mutilate an unconscious patient."

Checkmate.

Dr. Evans stared at the phone, then at the unconscious Sabrina, then at the scalpel in Chloe's hand. He knew his life was over either way, but only one path offered a chance to avoid a jail cell.

With a sob, he scrambled to his feet and picked up the scalpel.

Chloe had no desire to watch. She had seen enough blood and suffering for two lifetimes. Her revenge wasn't about sadism; it was about justice. A perfect, symmetrical exchange of fate.

She walked to the door of the operating room and slid the bolt lock into place. Then she leaned against it, her arms crossed, a silent, menacing sentinel.

The doctor, under her unblinking gaze, closed his eyes and made the first trembling cut on Sabrina's cheek.

Chloe turned away. She had more important things to do.

She moved to Sabrina's side, quickly stripping off the nurse's uniform. It was a little loose, but it would do. She pulled on the pale blue scrubs over her own clothes, tucked her long auburn hair into a disposable cap, and covered her face with a surgical mask.

In the reflection of a polished steel cabinet, she was just another anonymous medical worker.

"If you try anything clever," she said to the doctor's back, "I'll release this entire chat log to every news outlet in the country. Your career, your life, will be over."

She didn't wait for a reply. She slid the bolt back, opened the door, and stepped out into the quiet hallway of the clinic.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. She kept her head down, walking with a purpose she didn't feel, her sneakers squeaking softly on the polished floor.

Just as she neared the exit, two nurses rounded the corner, chatting. They glanced at her and smiled. "Leaving early, hon?" one of them asked.

Chloe's blood ran cold. She just nodded, forcing a muffled, "Yeah, long day," from behind her mask, and quickened her pace.

She pushed through the glass doors and into the dazzling California sun. The sudden brightness made her dizzy. She leaned against the wall, gulping in the free, smog-tinged air.

It was real. She was out. She was free.

Adrian. Sabrina's words at the funeral home echoed in her mind: "Ethan and I planned Grandma's death." Grandma Evelyn. The only person who had ever been good to her. She couldn't let her die. She had to go.

But she looked down at herself—jeans, a t-shirt, and the smell of disinfectant. Could she get into Sterling Manor like this? She didn't care. She had to try.

She took out her phone, which she had retrieved from Sabrina's bag. Her hands trembled as she turned it on.

The screen lit up. The date appeared before her eyes.

October 24th.

Chloe's breath hitched. Her blood turned cold.

Sterling Industries' annual charity gala.

Everything came flooding back. The elegant banquet hall, the string quartet, the champagne. And the tiramisu. Damn it, tiramisu with almond powder.

That was the night Adrian's grandmother, Evelyn Sterling, died from a sudden, severe allergic reaction.

Everyone assumed it was a tragic accident. But months later, Sabrina, in a moment of triumph, confessed the truth to Chloe. She and Adrian's cousin, the charming and ambitious Ethan Sterling, had orchestrated it all. It was a clever and ruthless conspiracy designed to frame Chloe, destroy her engagement to Adrian, and eliminate Adrian's most powerful supporter on Sterling's board.

She had to get there. She had to stop them. She had already saved herself; now she had to save the first member of the family she was determined to protect.

Chloe checked the time on her phone. 6:15 PM. The party starts at 7 PM.

She can't afford to waste a single moment.
