Chapter 2

"Don't play games, Serena. You have nowhere else to go," Carter snapped, his voice chasing me into the hallway.

"Watch me," I called back, not even breaking my stride.

I climbed the sweeping mahogany staircase, my hand trailing lightly over the banister. Carter's heavy footsteps pounded on the carpet behind me. He wasn't used to being ignored. For five years, I had catered to his every mood, smoothed over his every outburst, and played the perfect, submissive wife.

Those days were dead.

I pushed open the door to the nursery. Leo sat on the plush rug, stacking wooden alphabet blocks. The sight of my three-year-old son hit me like a physical blow. His dark hair curled around his ears, and his cheeks were flushed with concentration. He was alive. He was breathing.

"Mommy?" Leo asked, looking up.

"We're going on a trip, baby," I said, pulling a single navy duffel bag from the closet shelf.

Carter stopped in the doorway, crossing his arms over his pristine uniform. "You're making a mistake. Your pride won't keep you warm."

"The mistake was marrying you," I said. I tossed a stack of Leo's shirts and his favorite dinosaur pajamas into the canvas bag.

"Mommy, why is Daddy mad?" Leo asked, clutching a blue block to his chest.

"Daddy isn't mad, buddy," Carter said, his tone shifting to a forced, sugary gentleness. "Mommy is just throwing a tantrum."

I spun around. "Do not speak to him like that."

"He's my son too," Carter argued, stepping into the room. "You can't just pack a bag and take him."

"I can," I challenged, meeting his gaze. "You signed the custody waiver in the divorce dossier."

Carter froze. "What?"

"Page four, paragraph two. Full physical and legal custody of Leo defaults to me. You didn't even read it, did you?"

The color drained from his face. "You tricked me."

"I spent three years building you into the man you are today," I said, shoving a pair of tiny sneakers into the bag. "I smiled at General Davies. I hosted the charity galas. I bought you that major's oak leaf with my family's money and my family's connections."

"I earned my rank," Carter shouted, his composure cracking.

"You used your new security clearance to track down Chloe," I fired back. "You spent my money to find my step-sister, so don't talk to me about earning things. I gave you exactly what you asked for downstairs. A clean break."

I zipped the duffel bag shut. The harsh sound echoed in the quiet room.

"Grab Rex, sweetie," I told Leo.

Leo scooped up his stuffed T-Rex and hurried to my side. I grabbed his small, warm hand, anchoring myself to the reality that he was safe.

Carter blocked the doorway, his jaw tight. "You take him out of this house, and you get nothing from me. No protection. No help."

"Move, Carter."

He stared at me, searching for the desperate, clinging woman he thought he knew. When he found nothing but cold resolve, he slowly stepped aside.

I led Leo past him and headed down the stairs.

Chloe waited in the foyer. She leaned against the marble console table, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief. The baby slept in a portable bassinet near her feet. When she saw me carrying the bag, her lower lip trembled.

"Serena, are you really taking Leo?" Chloe asked, her voice a fragile whisper. "He needs a father."

"He has me," I said.

"But a boy needs a male role model," Chloe insisted, taking a step forward. "Carter is such a good man. You're being selfish."

"Selfish?" I asked, stopping at the bottom of the stairs. "You slept with a married man, had his baby in secret, and now you want to play life coach?"

"I love him!" Chloe cried, fresh tears spilling over her cheeks. "We didn't plan it! It was an accident."

"Nobody accidentally forgets to use protection for six months, Chloe."

Carter hurried down the stairs and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Leave her alone, Serena. She's sensitive right now."

"And I'm bored," I said.

Chloe pressed her face against Carter's chest. "I just want you to be happy, Serena. I hope you find somewhere safe."

I stared at her tear-stained face. In my past life, that same innocent expression had masked the poison she fed to the media, destroying my reputation before the car crash finally ended my misery.

I stopped beside the brass wastebasket near the front door.

"Carter," I said.

He looked up. "What now?"

I held my left hand over the metal bin. With my thumb, I twisted the two-carat diamond engagement ring off my finger.

"What are you doing?" Carter demanded, his eyes widening. "That cost thirty thousand dollars."

"Shedding dead weight."

I let go.

The ring fell, hitting the bottom of the empty brass bin with a sharp, final clink.

Chloe gasped, pressing both hands over her mouth. "Serena, how could you? That's a symbol of your vows."

"My vows are dead," I said. "Keep the ring. Sell it. Buy yourself a conscience."

Carter glared at me, his face turning a dark shade of red. "You're insane. You won't last a week out there."

"I'm free," I replied.

I turned my back on them and pushed open the heavy oak front door.

The sky had turned a bruised, violent purple. Wind howled across the porch, carrying sheets of freezing rain.

"It's raining, Mommy," Leo said, shrinking against my leg.

"I know, baby," I murmured, pulling his yellow raincoat hood over his head. "Keep your head down."

I didn't bother looking for an umbrella. I gripped the handle of my duffel bag, held Leo's hand tightly, and walked down the porch steps.

The cold rain soaked my hair instantly, plastering my blouse to my skin. I kept my eyes focused straight ahead.

"You'll be begging to come back by tomorrow!" Carter yelled from the doorway.

I ignored him. The gravel crunched loudly under my shoes as we marched toward the wrought-iron gates at the end of the long driveway. Every step felt lighter than the last. I had my son. I had the five million dollars. I had a second chance.

"Almost there," I promised Leo, squeezing his hand.

I pushed the heavy iron gate open and stepped out onto the sidewalk.

Blinding headlights suddenly cut through the gray downpour.

Tires squealed against the wet asphalt.

As I stepped through the gates into the pouring rain, a convoy of black, armor-plated SUVs slid across the street and cut off every escape.
