Chapter 2

The house was cold. It was always cold. Aurora dripped rainwater onto the polished marble of the foyer, the small puddle a stark imperfection in the sterile, museum-like space. She had lived in the Blackwood manor for three years, but it had never been a home. It was a collection of expensive objects and empty rooms. Not a single photograph of them together graced any wall.

A bitter, self-mocking smile touched her lips. Of course not. You don't frame a business contract.

The front door opened behind her. She didn't need to turn. The air grew colder, heavier. Damian Blackwood stepped inside, shrugging off his tailored coat with precise, economical movements. He didn't ask why she'd left. He didn't comment on the fact that she was soaked to the bone.

His friends' laughter echoed in her head. Fat, scarred shield.

He walked past her without a glance, heading for the built-in bar in the cavernous living room. The clink of a heavy crystal tumbler was the only sound. He poured two fingers of whiskey, the amber liquid catching the light.

He took a slow sip, then turned. His expression was impassive, his eyes the color of a winter sky.

"Seraphina is back for good," he said. His tone was as flat and final as a legal verdict. "It's time we ended this."

The words were another blow, but there was nothing left to bruise. She lifted her chin, meeting his gaze directly. "So, it was all for her?"

He didn't grant her the dignity of a lie. "I owed her. My family owed hers. You were part of the solution."

A solution. Not a person. Not a wife. A line item in a ledger of family debts.

A single, hot tear escaped, tracing a path down her cold cheek. She had to ask. She had to know. Her voice trembled. "Was there ever a moment, just one, that was real for you?"

Damian was silent. His eyes raked over her, from her dripping hair to her cheap, damp jacket. It wasn't a look of consideration; it was an assessment, a final calculation of an asset about to be liquidated.

"It was a contract, Aurora," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "A successful one. You received the security you needed, and I fulfilled my obligation. Let's not complicate it with sentiment."

That was it. The finality of it was absolute.

She laughed. A broken, watery sound more painful than a scream. "You're right. It was just a contract." The words tasted like ash.

She took a shaky breath and squared her shoulders. The hopeful woman who had walked into The Onyx Club was gone, drowned in the rain and his indifference. "Fine. I agree to the divorce."

A flicker of surprise crossed his features, quickly suppressed. He had expected tears, pleading. Her quick acquiescence threw him off-balance.

"Good," he said, recovering. "The papers are already drawn up. My lawyer will contact you."

He reached into the leather briefcase he'd set by the door, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. The slap of paper against glass was unnervingly loud.

His phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen. Seraphina. His entire demeanor shifted. The cold mask softened, his voice dropping to a warmer register.

"I'm on my way back," he said into the phone.

Aurora held herself still, letting the bitterness wash through her. There was nothing left to say.

He ended the call and put on his coat. He was leaving. A three-year marriage, ended in less than five minutes.

He paused at the door, his back to her. "The settlement is generous," he said, his voice once again cool and businesslike. "You won't have to worry about money."

Of course. Money. The only language he understood. The final payment for services rendered.

The door clicked shut. She was alone.

She walked to the coffee table and picked up the envelope. Her fingers were numb. She slid out the documents. The legalese swam before her eyes until she found the last page. The settlement was staggering. Enough to buy a new life.

It was an insult. A price tag on her heart.

She sank to the floor, clutching the papers, her body curling into a tight ball. The tears came again, hot and furious. But this time, she wasn't crying for him. She wasn't crying for a love that had never existed.

She was crying for the naive, broken girl who had wasted three years of her life believing she could ever be enough.

When the tears finally stopped, her eyes were empty. And then, slowly, something new began to form in their depths. Something hard, and cold, and unbreakable.
