Chapter 2

The Sears house shrank behind her. No attachment. No regret. Just the clean relief of walking away.

June navigated the tree-lined streets. Manicured hedges. Paved driveways.

She checked her pockets. A few crumpled bills. A debit card holding less than five hundred dollars—her entire net worth, scraped together from secret part-time jobs.

At a bus stop, June studied the route map.

Street names. Transit lines. The city grid radiating from the center.

She stopped.

She knew this map.

Not from the original June's patchy memories. This knowledge was older. Sharper. It belonged to Aurora.

The geography matched. District boundaries. The industrial quarter to the south. The financial towers to the east. The grimy pocket of the city center known as the Blackwood District.

It was identical to the world she had navigated in her first life.

This world and her old world were the same.

Same map. Same underworld. Same hidden channels. Everything she had learned as Aurora—every contact, every password, every survival instinct—might still have currency here.

A jolt of pure adrenaline spiked through her veins. A cold, sharp satisfaction settled in her chest.

June wasn't starting from nothing.

A destination surfaced in her mind. An underground antique market in Blackwood. The fastest way to turn expertise into capital.

She boarded the bus. As manicured lawns gave way to decaying brick and graffiti, June closed her eyes, sifting through Aurora's knowledge: ancient artifacts, the fingerprints of forgers, the tells of authentic pieces.

The bus dropped her at the edge of Blackwood. The air smelled of damp pavement and rotting garbage. She navigated the labyrinth of grimy alleys with a familiarity that defied her eighteen years.

Left at the shuttered laundromat. Right at the blue dumpster.

June stopped at a nondescript tattoo parlor. Inside, a burly, tattooed man sat behind the counter. His eyes dragged over her thin frame and cheap clothes. His lip curled with open, lazy contempt.

She ignored it. She met his stare and spoke a password from another life.

"I'm here to see the Old Man's collection."

The disdain vanished, replaced by a flicker of genuine shock. He squinted, re-evaluating her, then grunted and jerked his head toward a back door.

A quiet thrill of relief sparked through her. Some passwords never changed.

June pushed the door open. A staircase led down into the muffled sounds of a hidden world—haggling voices, clinking metal.

She descended into a repurposed bomb shelter teeming with people. Rows of stalls stretched under dim bulbs, piled with chaotic goods. Rusted tools. Broken pottery. Jewelry of dubious origin.

In her faded t-shirt and worn jeans, she was invisible. She moved through the aisles, scanning the tables. Most of it was junk. Crude forgeries meant to fool amateurs.

June kept walking. Trusting the instincts that had kept Aurora alive.

In a surveillance room on the second level, a man in a tailored black suit watched the market floor on a bank of monitors.

His subordinate, Leo Vance, stood nearby. "Mr. Bryant, the market is stable. No unusual activity."

Jase Bryant didn't answer. His attention was on screen four.

A girl. Thin. Faded clothes. But her back was straight, her gait unhurried. She didn't glance around like a lost tourist. She moved with purpose.

Jase tapped a slow rhythm on his armrest, a habit that surfaced only when something truly caught his interest.

Leo followed his gaze. "A lost student?"

Jase didn't reply. A flicker of deep curiosity stirred in his dark eyes. The girl had stopped at a stall piled with miscellaneous junk. Her gaze fixed on a tarnished wooden box half-buried in debris.

She knelt. Her hands moved through the box, sifting, discarding. It looked like idle curiosity. But Jase could see the deliberate precision behind every gesture.

He leaned forward. "Run a check on her, Leo."

"Sir?"

"I don't like variables on my territory."

"Yes, Mr. Bryant." Leo pulled out his phone.

On the market floor, June's fingers closed around something small and metal. She pulled it from the junk.

A coin. Caked in grime and corrosion. Almost unrecognizable.

But she felt it. The specific weight. The unique texture beneath the oxidation.

Her heart gave a single, hard thud against her ribs—the only sign of excitement she allowed herself. A sharp thrill of victory coursed through her.

Found it.

June stood, the coin pressed in her palm. Her mind already calculating the negotiation, the exit strategy, the next move.

In the surveillance room, Jase watched her through the screen.

A slow, genuine smile touched his lips.

He began to feel curious about how things would unfold.

Marrying My Runaway Groom's Powerful Father Novel Cover
9.0
I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancé, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."
