Chapter 2

"Sign it now, Evelyn, or I will let my lawyers bleed you dry." Arthur tapped a manicured fingernail against the thick stack of legal documents. "They will drag you through the courts until you don't have a single penny left to your name. You will leave here with nothing but the clothes on your back."

"You always did love a dramatic threat, Arthur," I replied, keeping my tone perfectly level.

"It isn't a threat," he snapped, stepping into my personal space. "It is a promise. I built this empire from the ground up. I am simply taking back what belongs to me."

"You abandoned this empire," I corrected him, holding my ground. "It was in ruins when you left. The stock was tanking. The board was ready to file for bankruptcy."

"And you played the grieving widow perfectly to save it," he sneered, adjusting his silk tie. "A brilliant PR move. Now, sign the damn papers and give it back."

I traced the edge of the agreement. The rough texture of the heavy stock paper pricked my fingertips. Next to the stack lay a sleek, silver Montblanc pen. I wrapped my fingers around the cool metal.

Clara stroked Julian's shoulder, her massive diamond ring flashing under the chandelier. "Don't fret, boys," she cooed, her voice carrying over the silent crowd. "Once she is gone, we can finally move you into the master suite. We will tear out that dreadful floral wallpaper tomorrow."

Leo sneered, adjusting his Harvard lapel pin. "Make it quick, Evelyn. We have a real family celebration to get to."

"Yeah," Julian chimed in, crossing his arms. "You are ruining the mood. Dad promised us the new sports cars tonight."

"Sports cars," I repeated, looking at the boys I had raised, the boys whose scraped knees I had bandaged and whose nightmares I had chased away. "Is that the going rate for loyalty?"

"It is a hell of a lot better than the weekly allowance you gave us," Leo shot back, his face twisting in disgust. "We had to pretend to care about your stupid rules. Curfews. Grades. Manners. It was suffocating. Dad actually understands what we deserve."

"He understands how to buy you," I said flatly.

"He is our real father!" Julian yelled, his face flushing red. "Dad told us to just play along until he was ready. You thought you were raising heirs. We were just waiting for our real family to come back. We never loved you. We just tolerated you because we had to."

Those words should have hurt. They should have torn my heart into pieces. Instead, they just confirmed what I already knew.

Arthur slammed his palm on the table. The champagne glasses rattled, one tipping over and spilling golden liquid across the velvet cloth. "Enough talking! Put your name on the dotted line. Relinquish your voting rights, hand over the CEO title, and transfer the property deeds. Now."

"You want the CEO title," I clarified, twirling the pen between my fingers.

"I want the entire board answering to me by tomorrow morning," Arthur demanded, his eyes wide with greed. "I want the offshore accounts, the real estate portfolio, and the tech subsidiaries you acquired last year. I read the financial reports, Evelyn. You did a fantastic job growing my wealth."

"I did," I agreed.

Clara laughed, a sharp, grating sound. "Look at that dress," she mocked, eyeing my navy gown. "So stiff. So boring. You spent eighteen years playing the nun while I was sipping cocktails on a yacht. You wasted your youth, Evelyn. You were just a glorified manager. And now your shift is over."

Ten years ago, I forced open the rusted door of Arthur's old underground vault. Inside, I found the forged DNA reports and the receipts for the charred bodies he bought to fake his death. My grief died in that damp room. That same afternoon, I sat at my desk, uncapped this exact Montblanc pen, and signed the first authorization to quietly transfer every real asset out of his company.

I pulled the cap off the pen.

"You really want this, Arthur?" I asked, looking directly into his eyes.

"More than anything," he hissed, pointing at the signature line.

"Every single share?"

"Every last one. Sign it, or I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing in my home."

I flipped to the final page of the contract. The ink flowed smoothly as I wrote my name on the dotted line. I didn't hesitate. I didn't tremble. I simply signed away the empty shell he so desperately craved.

Arthur snatched the papers from the velvet table before the ink could even dry. He held them up, a triumphant grin stretching across his face.

"Finally," he declared, waving the document at the stunned guests. "The rightful owner reclaims his throne."

Clara clapped her hands together, practically bouncing on her heels. "Brilliant, darling. Just brilliant. I told you she wouldn't put up a real fight. She never had any real spine."

"She knows she cannot win against me," Arthur boasted, folding the thick stack of papers and shoving them into his breast pocket. He turned to the crowd, raising his arms. "Drinks are on me tonight, ladies and gentlemen! The king has returned!"

A few guests offered weak, hesitant applause. Most simply stared in shock.

Arthur snapped his fingers loudly.

Two burly security guards in dark suits stepped forward from the shadows of the hallway.

"Escort this woman off my property," Arthur barked, pointing a rigid finger at the front doors. "She doesn't belong here anymore. If she tries to take anything, check her pockets. Arrest her for theft if she even touches a silver spoon."

One of the guards reached for my arm. I sidestepped his grasp.

"Don't touch me," I said, my voice cutting through the murmurs of the crowd. "I know the way out."

"Then walk," Arthur commanded, crossing his arms. "And don't ever show your face in my city again."

"Your city," I murmured, a faint smile touching my lips.

"Get out!" Julian yelled, pointing at the exit. "Go find some other family to leech off of!"

The crowd parted again, creating a narrow aisle toward the exit. I walked past the shattered china and the spilled champagne. Whispers followed me, stinging like angry wasps.

"Can you believe her?" a woman muttered to her husband.

"Kicked out of her own house."

"Arthur always was ruthless. She should have known better."

I kept my spine straight, my gaze fixed on the heavy double doors. The twins laughed behind me, a harsh, grating sound that echoed off the marble walls.

"Don't let the door hit you on the way out!" Leo shouted, high-fiving his brother.

"She will probably end up sleeping on a park bench," Clara added, her high-pitched giggles cutting through the tension in the room. "Maybe we can toss her a few coins if we see her on the street."

I ignored them all. The guards trailed closely behind me, their heavy footsteps thudding against the floor. I didn't look back. I didn't need to. The man cheering for his victory had just signed his own death warrant, and he was too arrogant to realize it.

A guard pushed the heavy doors open. A blast of freezing wind whipped into the foyer, carrying sharp flakes of snow.

I stepped onto the frosted concrete porch.

The security guard slammed the door shut behind me, the loud thud vibrating through my shoes.

I stood alone in the biting cold, the icy wind tearing at my thin evening gown.

Through the howling storm, headlights pierced the darkness. A fleet of matte-black Rolls-Royces glided up the winding driveway, their tires crushing the fresh snow. The vehicles stopped in perfect unison. Dozens of men in heavy black trench coats poured out of the cars, instantly forming a solid wall around the wrought-iron gates.
