Chapter 5

He's been here the whole time.

I didn't see him when I walked in. Didn't look for him. But now—standing in the center of this room with Saige's words still hanging in the air—I turn my head and there he is.

Dominic stands near the bar. Navy suit. White shirt. No tie. His hands are in his pockets. He's watching me.

Our eyes meet.

I wait for something. I don't know what. An apology. A sign. Some acknowledgment that he sees what just happened. That he knows what Saige did.

He doesn't move.

Saige turns. Slow. Deliberate. She looks at Dominic. Then back at me. Her smile widens.

"Dominic," she says. Her voice carries. "Come here, baby."

He walks toward her.

Not toward me. Toward her.

He crosses the room in six strides. Stops beside her. His hand moves to her elbow.

Saige leans into him. Touches her stomach again. "I think I need to sit down," she says softly. "I'm feeling a little lightheaded."

"Let's get you outside," Dominic says.

Then he steps in front of her.

Between her and me.

His back is to me now. His shoulders are square. His hand is still on her elbow. Guiding her. Protecting her.

From me.

I don't move. Don't speak. I just stand there and watch my husband shield the woman who just humiliated me in front of fifty people.

Someone coughs. A chair scrapes. The bartender sets down a glass too hard and it cracks.

Dominic walks Saige toward the door. She glances back once. Catches my eye. Smiles.

The door closes behind them.

I count to ten. Then I pick up my glass. Set it on the nearest table. Turn.

And walk out.

---

The night air is cold. I stand on the sidewalk and breathe it in. My hands are steady. My pulse is slow.

I walk two blocks to my car. Get in. Lock the doors.

Then I open my laptop.

The document is already finished. I wrote it three days ago. Seventeen pages. Every transaction. Every shell company. Every discrepancy in the Montgomery Foundation's filings. The Monaco conference that never happened. The Cayman consulting fees. The real estate purchase under Saige's name that doesn't exist in any county record.

I have screenshots. Bank statements. Emails my legal contact pulled from public records and freedom of information requests. I have dates. Amounts. Names.

I have everything.

I open the publishing platform. Copy the text. Paste it. Add the images. Write the headline: *The Montgomery Foundation: A Decade of Fraud.*

I add my name at the bottom. My real name. My email. My phone number.

Then I check the time. Eleven forty-seven.

I press publish.

The post goes live.

I close the laptop. Start the car. Drive home.

---

The apartment is dark when I get back. I don't turn on the lights. Just walk to the bedroom and open the closet.

I pull out the suitcases. The big ones. The ones we used for our honeymoon.

I start with the clothes. My clothes. I fold each piece carefully. Pants. Shirts. Dresses. I stack them in neat rows. I take my shoes. My books. The framed photo of my mother from the nightstand.

I leave his things exactly where they are. His side of the closet. His drawers. His watch on the dresser.

I work through the night. By dawn, I have six boxes and three suitcases.

I label each one. My handwriting is clear.

At eight thirty, I call the process server. Give him Dominic's office address. Tell him to deliver the papers in person. In front of people.

He says he can be there by ten.

"Perfect," I say.

I hang up.

Then I sit on the edge of the bed and look at the boxes.

Ten years. Six boxes.

I press my thumbnail into my palm. The wound doesn't hurt anymore. It's just a line now. A scar.

My phone buzzes.

Claire's name.

*Holy shit. Did you see the comments on your post?*

I open the browser. Refresh the page.

The post has four hundred shares. Six hundred comments. The number climbs while I watch.

Someone has already sent it to a journalist. Someone else tagged the California Attorney General's office. A law firm in Century City has left a comment asking me to contact them.

I scroll through the responses. Most are supportive. Some are vicious. A few are from people who worked for the foundation. They're adding their own stories. Their own evidence.

I close the browser.

Set the phone down.

Then I stand. Walk to the kitchen. Make coffee.

I drink it standing at the window. The sun is coming up. The sky is pink. The street below is empty.

At nine forty-five, my phone rings.

Dominic's name.

I let it ring. Once. Twice. Three times.

Then I answer.

"Lena—"

"The papers will be delivered at ten," I say. "Sign them."

"Wait—"

"I'm not waiting anymore."

I hang up.

Turn off the phone.

And go back to packing.
