Chapter 1

I went to the Black Moon Ball to surprise the man I had loved for three years.

Instead, I watched Nolan announce his engagement to another woman beneath a hundred silver lights.

He thanked her family for securing the career I had spent $18,000 helping him build.

I took off my ring and left it in his champagne.

Then a masked stranger found me on the rooftop.

He asked no questions.

I wanted no promises.

We agreed on one night without names, ranks, or tomorrow.

At sunrise, he disappeared, leaving a broken obsidian cuff link beside my dress.

Six weeks later, a second heartbeat appeared on my ultrasound.

That evening, the same cuff link flashed across every screen in Greyhaven, fastened to the sleeve of Lucian Vale—the city’s Alpha.

By midnight, his lawyer placed a $250,000 silence agreement before me.

I tore it in half.

Lucian stared at the pregnancy report, then at me.

“Forget the agreement,” he said. “Who else knows about my child?”

"To my beautiful future wife, Chloe Thorne."

Nolan’s voice rolled through the ballroom at the Black Moon Charity Ball, cutting across the elegant string quartet.

I stopped beside the towering ice sculpture. My thumb brushed the cheap silver band on my left hand, the same one he had slipped onto my finger six months ago in our cramped kitchen.

"Without her father, Councilman Thorne, I wouldn't be standing here tonight as your newly appointed Federal Prosecutor for the Neutral Territories," Nolan continued over the microphone. He raised his crystal flute, beaming at the blonde werewolf clinging to his arm. "Chloe made my dreams a reality."

The crowd erupted into deafening applause.

I stared at the man I had lived with for three years. The man whose bar-exam preparation and unpaid internship had cost me eighteen thousand dollars—all of it earned through double shifts at the downtown diner.

Nolan scanned the front tables, his triumphant smile bright, until his gaze drifted back and locked onto mine. The color drained from his face.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw my purse or drop to my knees.

I walked forward.

The crowd parted, sensing the abrupt shift in gravity. Nolan handed his microphone to an assistant and hurried down the stage steps, leaving his new fiancée confused.

He intercepted me halfway down the aisle, grabbing my elbow to pull me behind a floral pillar.

"Avery, what the hell are you doing here?" he hissed, keeping his voice low to avoid the nearby journalists.

"You forgot your spare apartment keys," I said, keeping my tone level.

"We can talk about this tomorrow. Go home."

"To the apartment I pay rent for?" I asked.

"Keep your voice down," he demanded. He cast a panicked glance over his shoulder at the flashing camera bulbs. "Chloe’s family is powerful. I had to do this. You're a human, Avery. You don't understand pack politics. A human mate wouldn't get me through the door of the prosecutor's office."

"I understand math," I corrected him. "Eighteen thousand dollars. Three years of my life."

I twisted the silver ring off my finger. The metal felt warm, sticky with my own sweat.

Nolan reached out, trying to trap my hands. "Don't make a scene, Avery. Please. I'll wire you the money I owe you by Friday. Every cent. Just walk away quietly."

I pulled my hand back, dodging his grip. "Keep it."

I held the ring over his half-full champagne glass and let go.

The cheap silver ring dropped into the champagne, sinking through a stream of frantic bubbles.

"Consider it a wedding gift," I told him. "Paid for by my overtime."

I turned my back and walked away, leaving him staring dumbly at his glass.

The music resumed, but a few observant pack reporters had already caught the exchange. Whispers rippled through the nearest tables, followed by the aggressive snapping of camera shutters.

I pushed through the glass doors onto the outdoor balcony. The cold night air hit my face, stinging my cheeks.

From my clutch, I pulled out the folded papers I had brought to surprise him tonight. The joint lease renewal for our apartment.

I ripped the thick document down the middle. Then I stacked the halves and ripped them again.

"Excuse me, miss!" A voice barked from the doorway.

Two reporters shoved their way onto the terrace, cameras raised and microphones extended.

"Are you Nolan's human girlfriend?" the taller one asked, crowding into my personal space. "Did he dump you for the Thorne family's political influence?"

"Get out of my way," I said, sidestepping toward the railing.

The second reporter blocked my path, a cruel smirk on his face. "Just a quick comment. Is it true you financed his entire education? How does it feel to be discarded now that he has a high-society wolf?"

A broad shadow fell over me.

A man stepped between me and the cameras. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that stretched over broad, muscular shoulders, blocking my view of the journalists. A molded black wolf mask obscured the upper half of his face, leaving only a sharp jawline and a firm mouth visible.

"The lady is not giving interviews," he said, his low, gravelly voice vibrating through the soles of my shoes.

"Who are you?" the tall reporter challenged, trying to lean around the stranger. "Are you with her?"

The masked man didn't answer. He took one step forward.

The sheer dominance radiating from him forced both reporters to stumble backward. The air grew heavy, pressing down on all of us. Even as a human, I could feel the crushing weight of his aura.

"Leave," the stranger ordered.

They scrambled inside without another word, the doors shutting securely behind them.

Silence settled over the balcony.

I let the torn pieces of the lease flutter out of my hands, watching them scatter into the wind and disappear into the dark courtyard below.

"Thank you," I muttered, wrapping my arms around my waist to ward off the chill.

He turned to face me. Behind the eyeholes of the black mask, his gaze was keen, intense, and measuring. "You handled that well. Most humans would be sobbing on the floor."

"Tears are a waste of hydration," I replied.

A low chuckle escaped his chest. "Fair enough."

His eyes dropped to my bare left hand. "You threw the ring in his drink."

"I should have thrown it at his forehead."

"You have good aim. It might have caused a concussion."

I finally looked at him properly. He stood over six feet tall, exuding an effortless, dangerous authority. The way he carried himself screamed high-ranking wolf, yet he was wasting his time hiding a human from the press.

"Why did you help me?" I asked, stepping closer to study the intricate molding of his mask.

"I dislike vultures," he said smoothly. "And I appreciate a woman who knows when to cut her losses."

He closed the distance between us. The rich scent of cedar and expensive bourbon wrapped around me, drowning out the lingering smell of Nolan's cheap cologne.

"Are you sober?" he asked out of nowhere.

"I haven't had a single drink," I answered, confused by the sudden shift in conversation. "Why?"

"Are you bound to anyone? A mate? A new boyfriend?"

"You just watched me end a three-year relationship in a matter of seconds. I am unattached."

"Good." He offered his arm. "Then let's get out of this miserable party."

"I don't even know your name."

"You don't need to know my name," he said, his voice roughening. "And I don't need to know yours. Just tonight. No strings, no history, no questions."

I stared at his offered arm. My entire life had been about planning, saving, and sacrificing for a future that Nolan just destroyed on a brightly lit stage. I was so incredibly tired of being responsible. I wanted to forget. I wanted to do something reckless, something that was mine alone.

I slipped my hand into the crook of his elbow.

We skipped the crowded lobby, taking a private VIP elevator up to the penthouse suites.

The ride was silent. I watched the digital floor numbers tick upward in bright red lights. My heart hammered against my ribs, loud in the enclosed space, but I didn't pull away. I didn't let go of his arm.

I glanced up at his profile. The overhead light caught the edge of his black mask, casting long shadows over his jaw. Next to his bespoke suit, my clearance-rack dress felt painfully inadequate. He was a creature of a different world, a high-society wolf who likely spent his weekends hunting in private reserves. I was a human nurse who still waited tables to keep a liar afloat.

Yet, the heat radiating from his body grounded me. It burned away the lingering humiliation of the ballroom.

The elevator chimed. The metal doors slid open to a dimly lit hallway lined with dark velvet wallpaper and thick carpets that muffled our footsteps.

He led me to the oak double doors at the very end of the corridor.

From his jacket pocket, he withdrew a sleek black keycard and tapped it against the reader. The lock flashed green. A soft click echoed in the quiet hall.

He hesitated before pushing the door open.

Instead, he turned to face me fully. He reached for the hem of his left leather glove.

He pulled the dark leather off, finger by finger, revealing a large, powerful hand. On his index finger rested a signet ring, deeply engraved with a snarling wolf. An Alpha crest.

He pressed that bare hand flat against the curve of my waist, his thumb resting just above my hip bone.

"You have one last chance to back out before we go through that door."
