Chapter 2

Mia POV

"Open the door and delete the damn file, Mia."

Ethan’s fist hammered against the cheap wood of my apartment door, rattling the deadbolt.

I didn't reach for the handle. I kept the chain locked.

I held my phone to the narrow crack, hitting play.

"If the Don protects her, we drag Dante into the lie too."

Serena’s recorded laugh echoed into the dim hallway.

"Take one step closer," I said, cutting the audio. "And this goes to the police. And the Valentis."

Ethan shoved his face near the gap, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"You think you can fight the family's lawyers?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a vicious hiss. "The missing money has your login traces all over it."

I stared at his hand gripping the doorframe.

Eighteen months ago, I had bandaged those exact knuckles at the clinic. He told me a crate fell on him at the logistics warehouse. I bought the lie. Just like I bought his excuse four months ago when he borrowed my tablet to submit his payroll expenses.

He had been framing me the whole time.

"You set me up on my own device," I said.

"You were convenient," Ethan sneered. "Dante won't burn his family for a woman he fucked once. You'll come begging me to fix this."

"I will never ask you for anything again."

"We'll see about that," he said.

He turned and walked down the hall, his footsteps heavy against the cheap carpet.

I shut the door and leaned against it until his footsteps disappeared down the stairs.

That confrontation happened two days after the yacht. Eight weeks after the yacht, I sat on the closed lid of the clinic's staff toilet, staring at a plastic stick.

"Please, no," I whispered to the empty room.

Two pink lines stared back at me.

My stomach rolled, a familiar wave of nausea that had nothing to do with the stale hospital coffee I had been drinking on my night shifts.

I gripped the edge of the sink until my knuckles turned white.

For two months, I had split the yacht recording into multiple backups. I changed every password I owned. I picked up extra shifts, trying to treat that night as the most dangerous, fleeting mistake of my life.

But the proof of that mistake was right in my hand.

"Breathe," I told myself.

When my hands finally stopped shaking, I used the employee scheduling portal to book the first same-day opening at the women's health clinic in the building and paid out of pocket.

The ultrasound technician turned the monitor toward me. The estimated gestational age matched the night on the water closely enough that there was no room for another explanation.

I folded the printed scan and shoved it into the bottom of my work tote.

I didn't dial Dante's number.

I remembered the heavy silence of his guards. I remembered the way a single word from him commanded absolute fear on that lower deck.

I refused to let my child become a mafia asset from the very first day it existed.

"Mia?"

I stopped halfway across the clinic lobby.

A woman in a tailored cream suit stood by the reception desk. She raised her left hand to tuck a stray blonde hair behind her ear, letting the overhead lights catch a massive diamond engagement ring.

"I'm Serena Bellini," she said, her voice bright and carrying across the quiet room. "Ethan's fiancée. We've been engaged for six months."

My chest tightened.

"Get out of my workplace," I said.

"I'm actually here to speak with your supervisor."

Serena turned as Miller, the head nurse, walked out of the back office.

"Can I help you?" Miller asked, eyeing Serena's expensive clothes.

Serena handed a thick stack of printed bank statements across the counter.

"I felt obligated to warn your facility," Serena said. "A large sum of corporate funds was routed through Mia's personal accounts into an offshore shell company."

Miller frowned, looking at the papers. "What is this?"

"Proof," Serena said. "The transfers even reference systems tied to this clinic. You should ask why someone under a fraud investigation still has access to patient records."

Miller did not accept Serena's story on the spot, but the routing pages carried my name, my old device ID, and a clinic network reference. She picked up the desk phone and called compliance.

Five minutes later, she came back looking grim.

"Mia, hand over your badge and locker key until compliance finishes a review."

"Those pages are forged," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I didn't steal anything."

"Then the audit will show that. For now, you're suspended from shifts."

I dropped the metal key into her hand.

My night shifts, my nursing tuition, my entire reputation—gone in ten seconds.

Serena stepped close as I picked up my tote bag.

"Ethan never planned to marry you," Serena whispered, a sharp smile on her red lips. "You were just a useful empty account."

I caught Ethan before he could unlock his sedan in the clinic parking lot.

"Six months," I said, stepping between him and the driver's side door. "You were engaged to her the entire time."

Ethan didn't even flinch.

He pulled a folded sheet of paper from his jacket pocket and thrust it toward me.

"Don't make this about romance," Ethan said. "Sign the confession."

"What is this?"

"Admit you transferred the funds without authorization. Pack your bags and leave the city. If you do, Serena withdraws the complaint, and you stay out of prison."

I snatched the paper from his grip.

I ripped it in half. Then I tore it again, letting the pieces flutter onto the wet asphalt.

"I'm not taking your fall," I said. "I would rather lose my job than cover your crimes."

Ethan’s jaw clenched.

"I have security footage from the yacht," he said. "You walking out of Dante's penthouse, wearing his shirt."

"You wouldn't dare."

"If you don't sign, I release it," Ethan said. "I'll tell the family you stole the cash and slept with the Don to secure your protection. They'll bury you."

"You're a coward," I said.

"I'm a survivor," he shot back, shoving past me to get into his car. "Have fun paying your rent."

I locked my apartment door and pulled out my laptop.

I logged into my banking portal.

A red banner flashed across the top of the screen.

Account Frozen. Disputed Funds.

They had locked my savings. I couldn't pay next month's tuition. I couldn't even buy groceries.

I reached into my tote bag to pull out the ultrasound report, needing to hide it somewhere safe.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter.

A text from an unknown number lit up the lock screen.

I tapped it open.

It was a photograph.

I stared at the image of myself, taken just three hours ago. I was walking out of the women's health corridor, my fingers tightly gripping the folded white ultrasound paper.

A second message chimed in right below the picture.

"Congratulations. I wonder how much Dante will pay for his heir."
