Chapter 2

I sank onto the cold tiled floor, bowing my head as tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. I was consumed by regret for what had happened. I was only twenty years old. Just a maid, struggling to get through college, earning barely enough to get by. And now… there was a life growing inside me. A tiny heartbeat. A miracle born from a night that should never have happened.

I wanted to tell him. God knows I wanted to run to him, wrap my arms around him, and whisper the words that would change everything: "Yvan, you’re going to be a father." I imagined his face — the shock, followed slowly by a beautiful smile. I imagined us facing this together, hand in hand. I imagined a future I had never dared to dream of.

But then reality knocked — cold and harsh.

How could I tell him something that would ruin his life? I didn’t even know if he would accept our child. His family might despise me entirely. He had his own world — businesses to run, alliances to maintain, a future already planned out by his family. There was Rebecca — the beautiful, sophisticated woman from a family as wealthy as his, the one everyone expected him to marry. She belonged in his world. She was his equal. And me? I was just a maid. A simple student with nothing to show for myself but my dreams.

What if he didn’t believe me? What if he thought I had used that night to trap him, to climb the social ladder, to secure a future I hadn’t earned? What if he looked at me with disgust in his eyes and told me to get rid of it? What if he saw me as nothing more than a gold digger, taking advantage of a moment of weakness?

The fear weighed heavier than the truth. It settled over me like a thick fog, clouding my judgment, whispering every worst possibility. So I stayed silent. I hid the test at the very bottom of my drawer, beneath old clothes and textbooks. I concealed the nausea by eating smaller meals and stepping outside for fresh air whenever it struck. I locked the truth deep inside my heart, where no one could see it — not even him.

Every day, I watched him. He went about his life — early morning meetings, endless phone calls, business trips, and yes, dinners with Rebecca. I saw their photos in magazines, standing side by side — the perfect couple, elegant and poised. And I remained in the background, cleaning, cooking, serving, while his child grew inside me. Slowly, my body changed — at first just softness, until it became undeniable. So I started wearing loose clothing, thick sweaters, simple dresses — anything to hide what could no longer be ignored.

Every time he looked at me, my heart ached. He had no idea. He had no clue that when he gave me that rare, genuine smile he offered so few people, he was smiling at the mother of his child. That when he asked if I was feeling well, noticing the paleness in my cheeks, he was asking about the little one growing inside me. That when he brushed past me in the hallway, his scent lingering in the air, he was walking right by his own future.

I loved him. More than I should have, more than anyone. But I was terrified that my love would only become a burden to him. That I would be the reason he fell from the life that had been planned for him. That out of obligation alone, he would be forced to marry me.

So I kept the secret. I held back my words. I bit my tongue every time I was about to speak. And I prepared myself for what I had to do — disappear before it was too late. Before anyone noticed. Before he ever found out.

By the third month, my body could no longer hide the truth. The bump was there, unmistakable, even beneath the largest clothes I owned. I had to leave. There was no other choice.

One night, as he slept, I stood by his bedside for a long time. Moonlight spilled through the curtains, painting his face in silver. I studied every line of him — the man I loved, the lips that had kissed me, the heart I had hoped would one day be mine. I memorized every detail, knowing this might be the last time I would ever see him. I wanted to wake him. To shake him and scream the truth. But I didn’t. Because I loved him too much to chain him to a life he hadn’t chosen.

Then I left a letter on his desk. No name. No explanation. Just six words that shattered my heart as I wrote them:

"Goodbye. Don't look for me."

I left before sunrise. Twenty years old, with barely enough money to survive, no family to turn to, and carrying his child. I walked away from the only home I had ever known, leaving behind the man I loved, believing I was doing the right thing. If only I had known then… that leaving us both was the hardest mistake I would ever make. That in trying to set him free, I had only imprisoned us both.

The months that followed were the hardest of my life. I found a small rental house outside the city — cramped, cheap, and far from everything that reminded me of him. The walls were thin, the roof leaked when it rained, but it was safe. And it was mine.

I lost count of how many times I cried and prayed that he would find me. But he never did. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, yet Yvan never came.
