Chapter 4

Zayn's POV

“Uhhhhhhh”, I groaned in irritation when my mum banged the door behind her.

“Why is she hell bent on linking me up with those girls? Why can't she understand me? Can't she see that those girls are desperately after my money, power and the Luna title of the most powerful pack?”.

They don't even love me, just want to get their way up in power.

I rubbed my forehead and ran my hands on my disheveled hair in frustration while leaning into the executive chair I was sitting on.

I really needed to cool off and I think a run in the forest would suffice.

The Blackcrest pack, which is the biggest pack in North America, was surrounded by a lot of forest that provided shelter and prevented the sun from being too harsh.

The pack house was a three story building in which the ground floor consists of a large sitting room, a dining area, the kitchen connected with the dining area, a mini gym where Zayn does his workout if he doesn't want to train with the warriors and a few rooms where omegas working in the pack house stay.

The first floor is reserved for visitors who come to visit or for official duties, the second floor is where John and his mate Cassy stay.

It contained Alpha Zayn's study and also served for additional visitors if the first floor was fully occupied because it had additional rooms.

The third, which is the last floor, was reserved only for Alpha Zayn. No one was allowed on the last floor except on Alpha's instructions.

The front of the pack house was decorated with trees and flowers of all kinds that were beautifully craved, it was really a sight to behold.

By the right consists of a parking lot for the Alpha and visitors which trailed to the runway and by the left consists of a very beautiful garden which stretches to the forest at the end.

I have already shifted to my wolf form as the remnants of what used to be my clothes were scattered on the floor.

My majestic black wolf was beatified by my icy blue eyes that can pierce anything in the world. I made a piercing glass shattering growl that was sure to disturb everyone but I was too angry to care and jumped out of the window of my study on the second floor dashing into the garden leading to the forest.

John's POV

I and Cassy left the study to give Alpha Zayn and his Mum, Luna Sophia some private time. We heard some angry bickering between the mother and son but we knew we were not allowed to interfere.

“It's a family matter anyways”, I shrugged.

“John, are you sure Alpha Zayn is okay?”, Cassy asked with concern.

“We are aware that his mum can be a pack of troubles”, she added.

I practically grew up with Zayn so we were more than best friends.

My father was his father's beta during his leadership and they were also best friends, so our friendship grew naturally.

We confided in each other and kept no secrets from each other.

We were mischievous and playful while growing up but when Zayn's father died, Zayn had no choice but to become the Alpha forcing me to become his beta.

The responsibilities were much compared to our free life while growing up but we had to live up to it.

“I'm sure he will be fine, he might just need to cool off”, I replied to Cassy.

Before a minute could pass,we heard a piercing growl which made Cassy scared and after confirming that the sound came from the study, I rushed towards it while Cassy trailed behind me.

I reached the study, turned the door knob and peeped inside only to find scattered shredded clothes on the floor with no trace of Zayn.

“Where the hell did he go?” I muttered under my breath.

I entered the room fully with Cassy who closed the door behind her.

We carefully scanned the room to find an opened window facing the garden.

“I think he headed to the forest to calm down”, I told Cassy.

“I pray he comes back better”, Cassy replied.

We called some omegas to clean up the messy scene and closed the door behind us while leaving.

Zayn's POV

I landed in the garden and ran furiously towards the forest as I lavished the feeling of the bare ground beneath my pawn.

I ran for a long time and found a peaceful spot under an oak tree in the forest.

I laid under the massive tree enjoying the caress of grass on my fur and the calm scenery while meditating on my life recently.

How many she-wolves fight amongst themselves to get my attention, how many Alphas are trying to use their daughters as bait for me and how my mum is trying to force someone on me not wanting to hear my opinion.

These were all exhausting and I really needed my fated mate for all these to stop and above all, for her understanding, comfort, softness and proximity.

“Uhhhhh”, I groaned in disappointment as I remember how I always wake up to no one to feel free around.

I always have to act like a leader, an Alpha for my pack.

“Moon goddess, send me my fated mate please, I really long for her”, I prayed desperately.

I stayed awake for sometime admiring the forest.

Some patrol warriors greeted me while bowing slightly when they crossed paths with me.

The patrol warriors were in charge of protecting the pack and some of them usually stayed around the pack boundaries ensuring that rogues didn't pass through our territory and after some time, I slept off.

The sacred grove of the Silvermoon Pack was alive with activity as I carefully arranged the ritual herbs for tonight's healing ceremony. My fingers traced the edges of the moonstone altar, feeling the smooth, cool surface beneath my touch. Three years of blindness had heightened my other senses—the earthy scent of sage and wolfsbane filled my nostrils, the distant murmur of pack members preparing for the ritual hummed in my ears. I adjusted my posture, tilting my head slightly as I'd trained myself to do, appearing to listen while actually concealing the fact that I could now see shadows and blurred outlines—the first signs my sight was returning. The full moon tonight would complete what had already begun. "Just a little more vervain on the eastern corner, Luna," Elara, our ancient pack healer, instructed gently. I nodded, reaching for the dried purple flowers. "Like this?" "Perfect," she said, her voice carrying a warmth that few in the pack showed me. "You have a natural instinct for healing rituals." I smiled, though my heart wasn't in it. Tonight's ceremony was my greatest hope—the rare celestial alignment that might finally restore my sight and awaken my dormant wolf.

On the battlefield, I fought desperately, turning the tide of what should have been a defeat. On the way back to the pack territory, I encountered Isaac Meyer, the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, whom I had loved for years. I thought he was there to celebrate with me, so I rushed toward him, throwing myself into his arms. But he struck me with a single blow, knocking me unconscious. When I woke, rumors had already spread through the pack that I had fled the battle, and my Delta, Ella Sullivan, was credited with leading the victory. I went to confront him, but he looked down at me with cold indifference. “You’ve already earned plenty of glory,” he said dismissively. “Ella has been your subordinate for years. Isn’t it fair to let her have this one?” His expression was so detached, so unfeeling, that I finally understood why he had insisted I lead this battle. It had all been a setup.

Leo's tiny fingers curled around mine as he nursed, his eyes drifting closed in that perfect, trusting way that made my chest ache. The afternoon light filtered through the nursery curtains, painting everything in soft gold. For once, the pack house was quiet. For once, I could just be his mother. The door opened without a knock. Levi filled the doorway, his Alpha presence sucking the warmth from the room. His eyes swept over us—me in the rocking chair, Leo at my breast—and his jaw tightened. "You look overwhelmed," he said. I wasn't. I'd been calm for the first time in days.

The venison had been in the oven for three hours. I knew because I'd been watching the clock above the kitchen door the way you watch something you don't actually care about — just to have somewhere to put your eyes. The pack house smelled like rosemary and rendered fat and the kind of warmth that makes a place feel like home, which was funny, because this place had never been home. Not once in three years. I pulled the roasting pan out and set it on the iron trivet. The meat was perfect. Honey-glazed, herb-crusted, the skin crackling at the edges exactly the way Eleanor had taught me the first Thanksgiving I spent here, back when she still believed her son was going to come around. From the great hall, I heard Emmett laugh. It was a real laugh — loose and easy, the kind he never used around me. Daisy said something I couldn't make out, and he laughed again.
