Chapter 2

: Spark on the Runway

A low hum of activity pulsed through Backstage Hall B. Lin Wantang crouched behind the velvet scrim, fingers dancing across her tablet’s screen as she calibrated the stage lights for the final dress rehearsal. The crown‑jewel necklace sat cool against her collarbone—its centerpiece a fiery garnet that caught each flicker of LED. Normally, she’d let an assistant handle these technical details. Today, she needed control.

“Lin, you’re in two,” called Mei, her lead assistant, poking her head around the curtain. “They want the red‑hued spotlight a touch warmer. Also—childcare is asking if Jasper needs more snacks.”

Wantang exhaled. “Got it. Warmth plus ten on the gel filter. And yes, send up another granola box for him.” She tapped the adjustment bar. The light’s glow deepened from vermilion to burned‑sienna on the infinite‑scroll backdrop. Perfect.

“Thank you,” Mei said, retreating. Jasper’s laughter trilled faintly from a fold‑out chair near the makeup trailer. He was immersed in his tablet, watching animated gems bounce across the screen—his favorite cartoon about talking sapphire fairies. Wantang offered a tight smile in the mirror.

Footsteps echoed down the polished concrete corridor. She braced herself. In stepped Qi Siheng, immaculately tailored, hands folded behind his back, eyes narrowing as they swept across the display cases. He paused, chin tilted, as if appraising an exhibit. A security escort hovered at his elbow, scanning guest badges.

Wantang’s pulse pounded in her throat. Six years of running, six years of hiding in plain sight—and here he was again. She forced her posture straight, mind reciting her self‑defense drills: situational awareness, exit routes, low‑light tactics.

Mei reappeared beside her. “He’s here for sponsor inspection. He’ll circle the stage; then rehearsal starts at 10:15.”

She nodded once. “Thank you, Mei.” When Mei ducked away, Wantang slipped her tablet into a velvet pouch and tucked it into an inner pocket. Time to focus on her work—not her past.

A hush fell as Siheng’s footsteps receded. The hall darkened, and overhead lights dimmed to signal the start. A single spotlight flared across the runway’s center, illuminating a pedestal draped in black silk. The audience—buyers, investors, media—leaned forward as a hush swept through the rows of folding chairs.

Behind the curtain, Wantang took a steadying breath. She exchanged her safety goggles for a designer’s mask: a half‑face shield trimmed in gold leaf, meant to protect her from stray sparks during metalwork. Its sleek curve hid the tension in her jaw. Then she slipped through the narrow gap onto the platform.

The hush rippled into applause as she stepped into the light. Cameras clicked. She placed the velvet drape over the pedestal and, with a gentle flourish, whisked it away. There it was: the **Phoenix Reborn Crown**, its spun‑gold feathers fanning outward, each tipped with tessellated garnet. It glowed like embers in a dying fire.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” she announced, voice amplified by a discreet lapel mic. “I’m honored to share my latest creation. This crown symbolizes resilience—how, like the phoenix, we can transform through adversity.”

A cascade of murmurs followed. Investors exchanged nods; fashion editors scribbled notes.

From the edge of the runway, Siheng’s gaze locked onto the crown. Recognition flickered in his eyes—as if the silhouette before him echoed some buried memory. He frowned and shifted his weight, curiosity warring with his trademark reserve.

Wantang held his gaze for a heartbeat, then turned to face the rear projection screen. With a tap on her earpiece, the dark curtain behind her parted, revealing a montage of sketches: rough pencil lines morphing into precise CAD renderings, and then photographs of her fist‑tightening in that mortuary hallway six years ago. A younger, terrified version of herself pleaded innocence beneath fluorescent lights.

Gasps rippled through the audience. The hush returned, thick as velvet.

She inhaled, sound crisp in the silence. “Yes, that was a chapter of my life. I was scapegoated, forced to flee. But here I stand today—reclaimed, reimagined, reborn.”

Applause surged. Wantang held her hand over her heart, then lowered it. A bead of sweat slid down her temple.

Suddenly, the screen flickered. The montage snapped to Jasper’s kindergarten photo—until it shifted, glitching into her college yearbook portrait at the forensic lab. Wantang froze mid‑breath, heart in her throat. That face: soft‑rounded cheeks, the same crescent scar under her ear. She recognized herself.

From the control booth came a thrum of static. Mei’s face hovered on the screen—jaw clenched. “Lin! The feed—we didn’t schedule the college image!”

People in the front row craned their necks. Siheng’s brow creased, lips parting. He stared at the portrait, then back at Wantang, as if witnessing a ghost.

She stepped forward, keeping her voice steady. “Apologies, everyone. Technical glitch. Let’s proceed.” She clicked her earpiece again; the image snapped back to the sans‑scandal jewelry close‑ups.

A polite smattering of applause rose, but the energy had shifted—charged, electric. Reporters already murmured into phones.

She guided the presentation toward the next piece: a pair of cuff bracelets carved to resemble molten feathers, tipped with spun‑silver. The crowd leaned in to examine the micro‑texture.

Minh, her tech assistant, slipped onto the runway beside her. “That was an unencrypted upload from your tablet—someone tapped into your control signal.”

Wantang’s heart thundered. “Lock it down. Divert to backup server.” She shot a quick glance at the booth. “And get security on this.”

Minh nodded, vanishing behind the scrim. Wantang took a breath, glancing once more at Siheng. His face was unreadable, storm‑gray eyes narrowed. He looked away, then signaled to his security escort.

The rest of the rehearsal passed in a blur: runway lights cycling through fiery reds, molten golds, icy whites; live models turning the screws on Tiffany‑hard poses; her assistant whispering last‑minute notes. Jasper sat glued to his tablet, oblivious to the drama, but Wantang kept one eye on him.

By the time the final piece—the **Ember Phoenix Earrings**, each a tiny flame of rose‑cut garnet—blinked into the spotlight, she felt as though she’d run a gauntlet. The audience erupted into applause. Wantang gave a curt bow, then swept a hand over the lineup, spotlighting every creation.

As she stepped offstage, directors and buyers approached her in rapid succession:

“Miss Lin, the crown’s concept—could we discuss a private label line?”

“Your texture technique—would you lecture at our symposium?”

“Investor X wants to meet you at VIP Lounge C—immediately.”

She nodded, smiling through exhaustion, routing inquiries to Mei. Behind her, the scrim fluttered. She ducked the curtain just as Siheng emerged at the runway’s lip, security detail in tow.

Their eyes met. This time, his gaze lingered a beat too long. He took a half‑step forward, then caught himself. A faint curl of amusement flitted across his lips.

“Lin Wantang,” he said, voice calm. “You’re a surprise.” His tone was measured—teasing, almost.

She blinked. “Mr. Qi.”

He inclined his head. “I’ll be reviewing the pieces this afternoon, in private.”

Her pulse fluttered. “Of course.” She tapped the badge pinned to her lapel: “Sponsor Appreciation Lounge—Access.” “I’ll meet you there.”

He offered a short nod, then turned on his heel. The security detail parted like a curtain for him to pass.

Wantang’s knees went weak. She sank onto a folding stool, closed her eyes, and ran a hand through her hair.

Mei slid to her side. “Are you okay?”

She swallowed, forcing a laugh. “Just—jammed a few too many memories into a single runway.”

Mei patted her arm. “We’ll secure the feed. And Jasper—should we move him to green room?”

Wantang nodded. “Yes. And alert embassy liaison: I need that citizenship registration meeting moved to tonight. We can’t wait.”

Mei checked her tablet. “I’ll handle it.”

Wantang craned her neck and scanned the hall. Paparazzi had gathered behind the barrier at the mall‑style glass wall, their cameras aimed inward like mechanical talons.

From the concourse came the first social‑media captions:

> “Mysterious Designer Sparks Scandal at Expo”

> “Phoenix Reborn Crown—But Who Is Lin Wantang Really?”

> “Did Qi Siheng Just Recognize His Alleged Scapegoat?”

Her stomach twisted. She stood, smoothing her jacket. “Send a brief statement to press: ‘Technical glitch resolved; all content now secure. Show continues as planned.’ Then escalate to legal.”

Mei saluted. “On it.”

Wantang straightened, taking a breath. She crossed to the green room door, pulling Jasper inside. He looked up, eyes wide.

“Everything okay?” he asked, pulling his fox backpack onto his lap.

She perched beside him, smoothing his hair. “Better than okay. You were amazing out there.”

He beamed. “Did you see me? I helped carry the wait.”

“You did.” She hugged him. “Come on—we've got a few minutes to get your snack and then I need you for a quick photo op with the sponsor team.”

His eyes sparkled. “Photo! Can I hold the crown?”

She laughed. “One piece at a time, buddy.”

Behind her, the green room’s security monitors glowed. A single thumbnail showed an AI‑driven face recognition tool flagging Lin Wantang’s profile on the arrivals camera. Below it, status: **“Flagged—Candidate for Corp. Review.”**

She exhaled. The game was on. And as long as she had Jasper at her side, she would play every move with precision—until Qi Siheng knew exactly who Lin Wantang was, and why she had returned.
