Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Blood Under the Moon

Arielle's breath came in shallow bursts as she darted through the dense forest. The full moon hung low, its silver light spilling across the gnarled trees, painting shadows that danced like silent predators. Her heart hammered-not just from the sprint, but from the strange, almost magnetic pull she felt tonight. She didn't know why her instincts screamed at her, why the wind seemed to whisper her name.

A branch snagged her sleeve, tearing through the fabric, and then her hand scraped against a jagged rock. She hissed as blood welled from the shallow cut, the crimson stark against her pale skin. She had expected pain, but she hadn't expected it to burn, to shimmer faintly under the moonlight. Her breath hitched as the glow spread, wrapping her fingers in a soft luminescence. Something deep inside her stirred, ancient and unyielding.

And then she saw him.

A figure emerged from the shadows. Tall. Broad. Dark hair glinting like night itself, and eyes-eyes that shone silver under the moon-locked onto her with a terrifying intensity. Wolves circled behind him, unseen yet sensed, their low growls vibrating through the forest floor. But it wasn't them that froze her in place. It was him. The alpha. The one they whispered about in fear. The Moon King.

"You shouldn't have bled," he said, voice smooth but cold, like velvet over steel. His gaze pinned her to the spot, and she felt something inside her quiver-fear, awe, and a strange pull she couldn't name.

"I-I didn't mean to..." Her voice faltered. Her courage, which had carried her this far, faltered under the weight of his stare.

He stepped closer, and she caught the faint scent of him: something wild, raw, intoxicating. The forest seemed to hold its breath as he crouched slightly, examining the glow of her blood. "Do you know what this is?" His fingers hovered, but didn't touch. "Do you know what you've awakened?"

Arielle shook her head. "I... I don't understand."

"The moon chose you," he said, low, almost reverent. "And when the moon chooses..." He let the words hang, heavy, dangerous. "No one can stop it."

The air between them vibrated, electric and alive. She wanted to step back, but her legs refused. Her pulse raced-not just from fear, but from the heat emanating from him, from the undeniable, magnetic pull she felt toward his presence. Every instinct screamed to run, yet every fiber of her being urged her to stay.

"Step closer," he commanded softly. His silver eyes bore into her soul. Something deep and ancient clicked within her chest, responding without permission. She moved, almost against her will, drawn by forces she didn't understand.

When she was close enough, he reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His touch was light, almost gentle, but it set her skin alight. She shivered involuntarily, feeling the faintest brush of fire beneath her veins. Then, almost imperceptibly, a crescent of moonlight shimmered on her neck, glowing softly-her blood marking her as something eternal.

"You belong to me," he whispered, words like silk laced with steel. Her stomach twisted, part fear, part desire. She should have pulled away. She should have run. And yet, she didn't. Her hands trembled, heart thundering, as a part of her-a part she didn't yet understand-longed to be claimed.

The wolves growled, circling, their eyes glinting red in the moonlight, but he didn't flinch. He simply stood, shadowed and immortal, with the moon casting a halo around him. "The world will try to take you from me," he said softly, almost to himself. "But it cannot. Not when the bond has awakened."

Arielle's mind spun. "Bond?" she whispered, barely audible. Her chest rose and fell, adrenaline and fear intermingling, and something deeper-an undeniable attraction-twined around her heart. "I don't understand..."

"You will," he said, tone final, unwavering. "And soon, you will realize... resistance is futile. The moon has chosen. And I... claim what the moon chooses."

Her breath caught. The forest, the moon, the wolves-they all faded into insignificance beneath the gravity of his presence. And as his hand hovered near her, light from her glowing blood casting their shadows in a ghostly dance, she understood: her life had changed forever. There was no going back.

The wind rustled through the trees, whispering her name. But it wasn't the wind she heard-it was him, and the promise, or the warning, in his words. Owned by the Moon King, the forest seemed to echo. And for the first time in her life, Arielle didn't fight the pull. She leaned closer. The bond had begun.
