Chapter 4

However, Liam only took a few bites disinterestedly. He did not even spend the night.

I did not understand why until I overheard his conversation with his friend.

“I like Olivia because she’s pretty and tame. It’s like teasing a kitten.

“But today her hands are covered in blisters, and that really turns me off!”

Suddenly, Liam gave me a call.

He instructed, “It’s the first time Ivy is following me overseas. She doesn’t know much, so I need you to prepare some materials for her.”

Immediately after, I heard Ivy’s sugary sweet voice.

“Even though I don’t know much about anything, Liam still likes me.

“Olivia, I’m quite impatient. Please prepare the materials by tonight.”

Liam stopped her.

“Olivia’s not feeling well. Don’t give her such a tight deadline…”

“Alright.” I immediately agreed to it.

Five years ago, I was forced to make a living by working at Paradise Restaurant as a waitress.

If it were not for Liam, who had spent a lot on me, I probably would not have been able to escape from those filthy rich old men.

After preparing the materials, I no longer owed him anything.

I slowly got out of bed, ignored my discomfort, and started to work on my laptop.

I pulled an all-nighter and finally completed Liam’s request.

In the morning, I went to White Corporation with the documents.

The receptionist knew my relationship with Liam. In the past, she would welcome me warmly.

However, she seemed nervous this time as she stopped me.

“Ms. Reid, Mr. White is not around. I’ll bring you to the lounge first.”

On the way, I heard the employees’ whispers.

“Mr. White doesn’t want Ms. Anderson to suffer from walking in heels, so he carried her from the car to his office. So romantic!”

The receptionist looked a little awkward. She wanted to say something to explain.

However, she did not say anything after noticing that I seemed unaffected.

After a while, Liam called me and asked me to send the materials to his office.

I opened the door to Ivy sitting on Liam’s lap. They were staring lovingly at each other.

Ivy smiled as she took the documents. Then she picked up a bowl of stew.

“Thanks for the help, Olivia. Come, have a taste. Liam made this stew for me.”

I stared at Liam in surprise.

We had lived together for five years. In all that time, I did not know he knew how to cook. I was learning that he could through Ivy.

I reached out to take the bowl.

Ivy let go prematurely, and the bowl fell onto the floor.

The hot stew splattered onto my calf, and I gasped in pain.

“Liam, Olivia must hate me! That must be why she burned me on purpose. Please don’t be angry at her…”

She started crying pitifully.

Liam immediately hugged her and examined her closely.

When he was certain that only her shoes were dirty, he stared at me with cold eyes.

“Olivia, quickly apologize to Ivy. Wipe her shoes clean as well!”

I ignored him and took a few pieces of tissue to wipe the burnt areas on my calf.

Liam was impatient. He grabbed my arm.

“This is how you treat your benefactor? I take care of you financially, so you must listen to me!”

He was very strong. As I was injured, I could not free myself from his grip.

I could only stumble out of the office as he dragged me.

He only stopped once we were at the top of the stairs. Then, he suddenly let me go.

I had yet to regain my balance, so I fell backwards and tumbled down the stairs.

I felt a sharp pain in my ankle, and it swelled up immediately.

Liam stared down at me.

“Olivia, this is what you get for defying me.”

After he said that, he left without hesitation.

I sat on the floor and endured the strange gazes around me. I did not have the strength to stand up.

After a long while, the receptionist brought me a wheelchair.

“Ms. Reid, just now, Ms. Anderson was in a bad mood. Mr. White has brought her to the countryside to relax. Let’s get you up first.”

She helped me into the wheelchair.

At the same time, my reminder to leave the country started to ring.

I switched off the reminder and read the text message that Liam sent.

[I doted on you too much over these years. Now, you’re acting so entitled.

[I’ve already blocked you. I’ll only unblock you once you realize what you’ve done.]

I did not care about that. There would be no future between us.

I took out my SIM card and put a new one in.

Then, I wheeled myself out. I got a taxi and went to the airport. I was ready to leave the country.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it-she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother's trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent-or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father's entire empire.
