Chapter 3

Serena's POV

The elevator climbed thirty floors in silence.

I stood at the front, my bare feet planted on cold marble, my wedding dress dragging behind me like a fallen parachute. Julian occupied the corner of the elevator car, his presence filling the small space until the air itself felt crowded. I could feel him without looking. The weight of his gaze pressed against the back of my neck.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.

I stepped out onto the top floor of my family's hotel, the headquarters of the trust that controlled everything.

The trust administrators. The lawyers. The endless paperwork that determined whether the Serena name would survive another generation or crumble into bankruptcy court.

The conference room doors were closed. Light spilled from the frosted glass panels, casting long rectangles across the polished floor.

I moved forward, my fists clenched at my sides. The silk of my wedding dress whispered against the marble.

Each step echoed like a gunshot.

Julian followed. Silent. Measured. His footsteps matched mine with unnerving precision.

I reached for the door handle—

"Impressive," Marcus's voice cut through the wood. Muffled. Mocking. "She actually thinks some random streetwalker she picked up is going to satisfy the trust requirements."

My hand froze on the handle.

"Marcus has a point," one of his lawyers added. The thin-faced one. The one who always smiled like he was counting teeth. "The trust language specifies a legitimate marriage. Not whatever circus act Serena dragged in from—what was it? The escort agency?"

Laughter rippled through the room.

My stomach turned to acid.

I pushed through the doors.

The conference room stretched before me, all glass and steel and cold corporate elegance. A long table dominated the center, and around it sat exactly the audience I'd expected. The trust administrators—three men in identical neutral suits, their hands folded precisely on the tabletop. Marcus's legal team, sharp-suited and smirking. And at the head of the table, reclining like a king on a throne, sat Marcus himself.

His face still bore the marks of humiliation from the cathedral. But here, surrounded by his people, he'd recovered enough to look bored.

"Serena." He didn't stand. "You're late."

"Am I?"

I walked toward the table, my chin lifted, my spine rigid. I could feel Julian behind me. A wall of heat and muscle and something far more dangerous than patience.

"You brought your... employee." Marcus's lip curled. "How quaint."

"He's my husband."

"A husband you hired." Marcus laughed. The sound bounced off the glass walls. "You think we don't know?

You think I didn't have someone follow you the second you left that cathedral? You called an agency, Serena.

You paid a stranger to play pretend."

The lawyers exchanged glances. One of them snickered into his palm.

"The trust requires marriage," Marcus continued, leaning back in his chair. "A real marriage. Not a transaction you can cancel when you get bored."

"And who defines real?"

"The courts. The trustees." He gestured vaguely at the administrators, who remained expressionless.

"Everyone in this room knows exactly what you did. You bought yourself a man for the evening and expect us to sign off on it."

I stepped closer to the table. My hands trembled at my sides, but I forced my voice steady.

"The certificate is real. The signatures are real. The law recognizes—"

"The law recognizes fraud," Marcus cut in. "And so do I."

He turned toward the back of the room and raised his hand.

"Remove him."

Two security guards emerged from the corners. Large men in dark suits. They moved with the silent efficiency of hired muscle—no questions, no hesitation.

My heart seized.

The guards advanced on Julian. He stood motionless near the doorway, one hand tucked into his pocket.

Unbothered. Unhurried. Like he had all the time in the world and intended to waste every second of it.

"Don't touch him."

The words ripped from my throat before I could stop them.

I threw myself between the guards and Julian, my arms spread wide. My back pressed against his chest. I could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat—calm, controlled, completely unafraid.

I couldn't say the same for myself.

"He's mine." My voice cracked on the word. "I paid for him. He's my private property, and none of you have any right—"

"Serena." Marcus's smile widened. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"Let me worry about that."

The guards hesitated, glancing at Marcus for instruction.

"I said remove him." Marcus's voice hardened. "Throw him out. Call the police if you have to. I don't care if he's trespassing or soliciting—just get him out of my hotel."

The guards moved again.

My arms trembled. My breath came in short, sharp gasps. The silk of my dress suddenly felt like armor I'd put on backward—protecting nothing, exposing everything.

I was going to lose.

The realization hit like ice water. Marcus had money. Power. A room full of lawyers. And I had nothing but a stranger I'd hired by mistake and a wedding certificate that probably wouldn't survive the first legal challenge.

Then Julian's hand closed around my wrist.

His grip was iron—unyielding, absolute. He pulled, and I had no choice but to follow. My body swung backward, colliding with his chest. His arm wrapped around my waist, pinning me against him.

I could feel every inch of him. The breadth of his shoulders. The hard wall of his torso. The deliberate slowness of his breathing against my racing lungs.

"Enough."

The single word fell into the room like a stone into still water.

Silence followed.

Julian's voice was low. Rumbling. It carried across the conference table with an authority that had nothing to do with volume and everything to do with weight.

He released my waist and stepped forward. His hand moved to his sleeve.

I watched, frozen, as he undid his first cufflink. Silver. Gleaming. He set it on the table with a soft click.

Then the second.

"Marcus." Julian's tone was almost friendly. "You have thirty seconds to leave."

Marcus's face purpled. "Who the hell do you think—"

"Twenty-five."

"You're a paid escort. A whore in a suit." Marcus stood, his chair scraping violently backward. "You don't give orders in my hotel."

"Twenty."

"This is my building. My conference room. My—" Marcus's voice pitched higher. "Security! I told you to remove him!"

The guards didn't move.

They stood frozen, their eyes fixed on Julian. Something had shifted in their expressions—confusion giving way to something that looked alarmingly like recognition.

"Fifteen." Julian's hand dropped from his cuff. "You're running out of time, and I'm running out of patience."

"This is insane." Marcus turned to the trust administrators. "You can't possibly take this seriously. He's nobody. A hired—"

The conference room doors exploded inward.

A man burst through—a middle-aged figure in a rumpled suit, his face slick with sweat, his breathing ragged.

William Chen. The bank's senior representative. The man who held my family's largest debt.

He looked wild. Desperate. Like he'd run the entire distance from his office.

Marcus opened his mouth. "William, thank god. Explain to this—"

William ignored him completely.

He pushed past Marcus, past the frozen lawyers, past the silent guards. He stopped directly in front of Julian.

And bowed.

A deep, sweating, trembling bow that bent his spine at an angle that looked painful.

"Mr. Vance." William's voice shook. "I received your message. I came as fast as I could."

The room went silent.

Marcus's face went gray.

And Julian—Julian smiled.
