Chapter 5

Ā  /Esme/

Ā  He should be down to meet us any second. He likes to make an entrance.

Ā  Dave's words repeated in my head like a ticking clock as I sat across from him, legs crossed, hands folded neatly on the table pretending I wasn't falling apart on the inside.

I smiled, laughed softly at whatever Dave had just said, nodding like the perfect fiancée, but every inch of me was on high alert. My stomach twisted. My skin prickled with nerves. My mind couldn't stop replaying him - the way Felix had touched me last night, the way he whispered against my ear this morning, the way he said:

Ā  "Tomorrow, I'm going to be inside you."

Ā  I clenched my thighs under the table, my body betraying me all over again.

Ā  Stop Esme, you are here with your Dave so you need to get your act together and focus. This is brunch with Dave's dad. Just breathe, you already guilty of cheating as it is don't make it worse.

Ā  Then...Ā I felt it.

Ā  That shift in the air. Like gravity had suddenly thickened. A quiet hush fell over the dining room as the glass doors at the back slowly opened.

Ā  And there he was.

Ā  My breath caught, it was like my ability to breathe and function like a proper human was taken away the instant he stepped in.

Ā  Walking toward our table like the world belonged to him tall, commanding, dressed in a dark charcoal suit that looked like it cost more than my entire apartment lease. His presence was magnetic. Every step was calm, deliberate. People glanced his way, some even stared. Not because he was flashy...Ā but because he owned the space without trying.

Ā  And then I saw his face.

Ā  Felix.

Ā  My mouth went dry.

Ā  No. No no no no no. It can't be him, please God let it not be him, why was fate so cruel, when others cheat they don't get caught in there first try, why the hell was my own case different.

Ā  But it was him. That same perfectly carved jaw. Those green eyes that had watched me cum. That wicked smirk I'd kissed. The very man who had finger-fucked me into delirium last night...Ā was now walking toward my table...Ā I hope he's not here to rat me out.

Ā  ...and Dave was standing up with a proud smile.

Ā  "Dad!"

Ā  I blinked so hard I thought I might pass out.

Ā  Dad? What the actual fuck man.

Ā  My head was spinning. No. This wasn't happening. My one-night sin, my secret sex god, my Felix was not Dave's father right?

Ā  But he was.

Ā  "Esme,"Ā Dave said brightly, reaching for my hand.Ā "Meet my father."

Ā  I tried to speak.

Ā  I couldn't.

Ā  Felix, Ā if that was even his real name smiled at me politely and offered his hand like we'd never met before. Like he hadn't moaned into my mouth. Like he hadn't licked my pussy clean that morning.

Ā  "Pleasure to finally meet you,"Ā he said smoothly.

Ā  Not a flicker of recognition in his eyes. Not a twitch. Not a smirk. Not even a tease. Just cool, elegant composure.Ā

Ā  I stared at his hand, unsure if I was supposed to shake it or run away screaming.

Ā  Dave nudged me playfully.Ā "Babe?"

Ā  I snapped out of it and awkwardly slipped my hand into his.

Ā  His grip was warm. Strong. Familiar.

Ā  Too familiar,Ā

Ā  His thumb pressed ever so slightly against the back of my hand just once. A small movement.

Ā  But it was intentional, and the little touch made me wet instantly, gosh I'm doom.

Ā  I jerked my hand away quickly and forced the biggest fake smile of my life.Ā "I-I'm honored, Mr. Vane."

Ā  "Please,"Ā he said, still cool and unreadable.Ā "Call me Gerald."

Ā  Gerald. So...Ā Felix was a lie. A name he gave me for the night.

And now Gerald my fiancé's father was sitting right across from me like nothing had ever happened.

Ā  What the actual fuck?

Ā  Dave laughed.Ā "I told you he doesn't look old enough to be my dad."

Ā  I couldn't laugh. I could barely breathe.

Ā  Gerald Felix folded his hands on the table and gave me a polite nod.Ā "So you're the young woman who stole my son's heart."

Ā  I wanted the floor to open and swallow me whole.

Ā  Because I wasn't just the girl who stole Dave's heart.

Ā  I was the girl who moaned his father's name in the dark.

The rooftop smelled like white peonies and rain that hadn't fallen yet. I got there forty minutes early. I'd told the florist twice where the candles should go, and she'd nodded the patient nod people give brides. I wasn't a bride yet. Three years to the day, and I was about to fix that. The dress was custom. Silk so quiet it didn't even rustle. I'd had the seamstress tuck the velvet box into a hidden pocket at my hip so Caiden wouldn't see it until I wanted him to. Manhattan blinked behind me, all those gold windows like applause waiting to happen. My heels sank a little into the soft grout between the tiles.

I stared at my phone in disbelief, scrolling through the email that had just landed in my inbox. The subject line read: "Disney World Private Event Booking Confirmation." My fingers trembled as I opened it, revealing an invoice addressed to my husband, Elliott Shaw. "Private rental of Magic Kingdom for one evening: $2,100,000." The amount made my stomach lurch. Two million dollars—for Phoenix Bell's birthday celebration. I placed a protective hand over my swollen belly, feeling my baby kick against my palm. Six months pregnant, and here I was, sitting alone in our penthouse while my husband planned a fairy tale for another woman. "Elliott?" I called out, my voice echoing through our empty home. Of course, there was no answer. He hadn't been home in three nights. My phone buzzed with a text from Dr.

I signed my own divorce papers thinking they were an investment in our future. Craig handed me the stack of documents with a smile, telling me it was to secure assets for our unborn children. I trusted him more than gravity, so I didn't read the fine print. Hours later, at his promotion party, I watched him announce his engagement to Chanel, the company heiress. I rushed to check the folder I had signed. It wasn't a trust fund. It was a complete dissolution of our marriage. I received no alimony. He kept the house and the stocks. And the box for "no child visitation" was already checked. The cruelest twist came the next morning. I stared at a pregnancy test with two pink lines. I was pregnant with the child of a man who had just tricked me into a divorce and called me "dead weight" in a text to his mistress. When I tried to disappear and rebuild my life, Craig didn't let me go. His ego couldn't handle my silence. He kidnapped me, locking me in a warehouse to "fix" our marriage, delusional enough to believe we could be a happy family after he caused me to lose the baby. I thought I would die in that cold, dark room. Then, a truck rammed through the wall, engulfed in flames. Felix, the quiet assistant I had barely noticed for five years, walked through the fire to get me. As he carried me out of the burning wreckage, leaving Craig behind, I realized he wasn't just an employee. He had been waiting to save me all along.
