Chapter 6

Emma's apartment felt unusually silent that morning, the city outside wrapped in a soft haze of early light, but inside her mind, it was anything but quiet. The memory of Liam Blake lingered like smoke-thick, intoxicating, impossible to ignore. Even though he had left the promenade the night before, his presence remained, an invisible tether pulling at her every thought.

She sat at the edge of her bed, her fingers tracing the engagement ring on her hand. The golden band glinted in the soft morning light, a symbol of commitment, stability, and the life she had promised Nathan. And yet, the spark Liam had ignited-the dangerous, thrilling spark-made her heart ache with confusion.

Sophie's voice broke through the haze like a lighthouse cutting through fog. "Emma," she said firmly, standing in the doorway with arms crossed, "we need to talk."

Emma looked up, startled, as Sophie crossed the room and perched on the edge of the bed beside her. The look in her eyes was serious, a mixture of concern and determination that always made Emma pay attention.

"What is it?" Emma asked, trying to sound casual, though the tightness in her chest betrayed her anxiety.

Sophie didn't waste time on pleasantries. "You can't keep going like this," she said bluntly. "This... Liam situation, it's dangerous. He's not just some figure from your past-he's a storm. And storms have a way of wrecking even the most carefully built lives."

Emma sighed, burying her face in her hands. "I know," she admitted. "I shouldn't think about him. I shouldn't feel this pull. I love Nathan. I promised myself to him. I just... I can't stop thinking about Liam. Every time I close my eyes, I see him. I feel him. And it terrifies me."

Sophie's expression softened, but her tone remained firm. "I know you feel something, Emma. I can see it. But this isn't just a feeling you can ignore. You're on the edge of something you might regret for the rest of your life. You need to decide-do you want to honor your commitment, or do you want to chase a spark that could burn everything to ashes?"

Emma's hands trembled slightly. Sophie's words struck a chord she wasn't ready to acknowledge. She wanted to be honest, to admit that the spark Liam ignited was irresistible, but she was terrified of what that honesty might mean for her life with Nathan.

Sophie leaned closer, her voice lowering. "I'm not saying ignore your feelings completely. I'm saying be smart. Be honest with yourself. And whatever you do, don't let him manipulate your heart. Liam is charming, irresistible, yes-but he's also unpredictable. He doesn't play by rules, Emma. And you're walking into a battlefield without armor if you let him."

Emma nodded slowly, absorbing Sophie's words. "I know. I just... it's hard. I've buried these feelings for years. And now, they're back. Stronger than ever."

"That's because he's not just anyone," Sophie said quietly. "He's the one that got away. But that doesn't mean he's the one for you. Not if it means destroying everything you've built with Nathan. You have to be careful."

Emma's stomach twisted. Sophie was right, of course. Liam's sudden reappearance had thrown her world into chaos. She knew the danger, the temptation, and the thrill-but acknowledging it made her feel guilty, weak, and undeniably human.

After a long silence, Emma finally spoke. "I don't know if I can resist him," she admitted, her voice barely audible. "I feel like I'm being pulled in two directions at once. Nathan... he's everything I've ever wanted. But Liam... he makes me feel alive in a way Nathan never could."

Sophie reached out, placing a firm hand on Emma's shoulder. "That's exactly why you need to be careful. Temptation is a fire-it feels warm and exciting at first, but it can burn everything to the ground if you let it. You need to remember your priorities. You need to protect yourself. And most importantly, you need to be honest with your heart before it's too late."

Emma nodded again, though the ache in her chest refused to ease. Sophie's words were wise, but they didn't make the feelings any easier to bear. Liam's spark had ignited something she couldn't simply extinguish with logic or discipline.

The rest of the day passed in a blur. Emma tried to immerse herself in wedding preparations-finalizing the guest list, confirming catering details, and coordinating with Clara on last-minute arrangements-but her mind kept drifting back to Liam. Every message notification, every shadow on the street, made her pulse quicken with anticipation and fear.

By late afternoon, Emma decided she needed fresh air. She stepped out onto her balcony, the city stretching out below her in a tapestry of lights and movement. The wind tugged at her hair, and she closed her eyes, letting herself breathe deeply, hoping to find some semblance of clarity.

A sudden sound made her open her eyes, and her heart nearly skipped a beat. Liam was standing in the courtyard below, leaning casually against the wrought iron railing of the building across the street. His eyes found hers immediately, and the spark between them ignited again, unspoken yet undeniable.

Emma felt her breath catch. She wasn't supposed to feel this way. She wasn't supposed to want him. And yet, seeing him there, so close and yet out of reach, made every rational thought in her mind evaporate.

"Liam!" she whispered, stepping back from the balcony. Her pulse raced, her chest tight with the thrill of danger.

Liam's expression softened. "Emma," he said, his voice low and deliberate. "I had to see you. Just once more before everything becomes too complicated. Before you say 'I do.'"

Emma's stomach knotted. "You can't-this isn't right. Nathan... I'm engaged. You know that."

"I know," Liam replied, taking a cautious step closer, though he remained safely across the courtyard. "And I don't want to ruin your life. I just... I needed you to know how I feel. I've tried to stay away, tried to forget... but I can't."

Emma swallowed hard, feeling the familiar tug of desire and longing. The spark Liam ignited was undeniable, dangerous, and thrilling all at once. She wanted to resist it, to anchor herself in her life with Nathan, but the magnetism between them was impossible to deny.

"Liam..." she began, but her words faltered. She couldn't articulate the storm of emotions swirling inside her-desire, guilt, fear, and longing all at once.

"I know," he said softly, reading her hesitation. "And I won't push. Not here. Not now. But I had to see you, even if it's only for a moment. You need to know that this... this spark between us is real. And it won't go away, no matter what you do."

Emma's hands trembled, and she pressed them to her chest, trying to steady herself. "I... I need time," she whispered.

"I'll give you time," Liam said, his eyes never leaving hers. "But Emma... just remember. Some sparks aren't meant to die quietly. And ours... ours is one of them."

Before she could respond, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving her standing on the balcony, heart racing and mind in turmoil.

Sophie's voice came softly from behind her. "Emma?"

She turned to find her friend watching her, eyes filled with concern. "You can't keep doing this," Sophie said gently. "You can't let him push you to the edge. You need to make a choice-before it's too late."

Emma nodded, though her heart still throbbed with the memory of Liam's gaze. Sophie was right. She couldn't keep teetering between loyalty and temptation forever. And yet, the spark Liam had ignited in her heart refused to fade.

That night, Emma lay awake, the city lights reflecting on her ceiling, her mind a battlefield of desire and reason. She knew she had to choose, but the choice felt impossible. Nathan was her anchor, her safe harbor. Liam was the storm, the fire, the thrill she had never forgotten.

And somewhere deep inside, she feared that once a spark ignites, it can't easily be extinguished.

Because Emma Carter's spark had been lit-and it was only the beginning.
