Chapter 4

"Tear it open, Ethan," I urged the silent monitor.

On the screen, my nineteen-year-old son slid his thumb under the seal of the final envelope. The heavy black ink on the front stood out against the crisp white paper.

Julian lunged across the mahogany desk. He slapped his hand down on the corner of the envelope, pinning it flat against the wood.

"Stop," Julian ordered.

Ethan jerked his hand back. "It says to open it."

"We do not start at the end," Julian told him, his tone sharp and unyielding. "We start at the beginning."

"Why does he care?" Nora asked, stepping up to the edge of the steel table in the safe room.

"Because Julian cannot stand being out of the loop," I replied, tracking my husband's rigid posture on the surveillance feed. "If he reads the last letter first, he loses the timeline. He loses control of the narrative. He always needs to dictate how a story unfolds."

Julian snatched the cedar box away from Ethan. He shoved the hundredth envelope to the back of the groove and pulled out the very first one from the front row. Number One. He ripped the top off without hesitating.

A thick stack of folded papers slid out.

Julian tossed the empty envelope aside and unfolded the documents. The camera angle caught the edge of a yellowed state seal, followed by the distinct blue watermark of a banking institution.

"What is that?" Ethan asked, leaning over his father's shoulder.

"A property deed," Julian muttered. He flipped to the second page. "And a photocopy of a bank draft."

"For how much?"

Julian squinted at the paper. "Two hundred eighty-six thousand dollars."

"Payable to who?"

Julian went completely still. The frantic energy that had fueled his search through the study evaporated. "Crossline Logistics."

Nora tapped her pen against her clipboard. "That is the lake house money."

"Every single penny," I confirmed, my voice hardening against the concrete walls.

On the monitor, Julian shuffled the papers. He found the handwritten letter tucked between the deed and the check.

"Read it out loud, Dad," Ethan pushed.

Julian ignored him. His eyes darted back and forth across the page. His brow furrowed deeply. He flipped back to the cashier's check, tracing his index finger across the top right corner.

"Look at the date," I whispered to the empty safe room air. "Look at the date, Julian."

"October fourteenth," Julian read aloud, his voice dropping to a hollow scrape. "Eight years ago."

Ethan crossed his arms. "That was when the company almost went bankrupt. You always told me the bank gave you a miracle extension at the last second."

"There was no extension," Julian said. He stared at the deed of sale. "She sold her mother's property. The lake house."

"She loved that place," Ethan said. A rare, sharp note of clarity pierced his usual teenage self-absorption. "She spent every summer there growing up. Why would she sell it?"

"To bail me out," Julian answered.

"He never asked," I told Nora, turning away from the screen to face the federal agent. "For eight years, we spent our summers sweating in the city instead of out by the water. I told him the property taxes were too high. He accepted the lie because his company accounts suddenly balanced. He took the money and never looked back."

"He thinks he built his empire from scratch," I continued, leaning over the metal table. "He gives speeches at charity dinners about his relentless work ethic. He tells young entrepreneurs about the sleepless nights he spent turning Crossline Logistics around."

"And all the while," Nora said, "he was standing on your mother's grave."

"He was standing on my silence," I corrected.

On the screen, Julian's hands began to shake. The paper rattled in his grip, the crisp sound bleeding through the audio feed.

"Keep reading," I commanded the screen.

Julian moved to the next paragraph. His jaw dropped. The arrogant posture he carried into the room vanished, replaced by a rigid, terrified tension.

"What does it say?" Ethan demanded.

Julian shook his head. "This makes no sense. She says the emergency capital loan I took out..."

"Yeah?"

"She says the signature on the application was a forgery." Julian looked up, staring blindly at the bookshelves across the room. "She says federal investigators flagged the account. They were preparing an indictment for wire fraud. If she did not clear the balance in full within forty-eight hours, I was going to federal prison."

"You forged a bank loan?" Ethan asked, taking a large step backward.

"No!" Julian yelled. The sudden volume distorted the safe room speakers, sending a burst of static through the air. "I never signed anything! I thought the bank rejected the initial application!"

"He did not sign it," I told Nora, watching Julian deny the crime on screen.

"You knew he was innocent?" Nora asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I knew he was too cowardly to risk federal prison," I replied coldly. "Julian plays in the gray areas. He bends tax laws and hides assets. But outright wire fraud? Forging a federal bank document? That requires a level of reckless desperation he does not possess."

"Then why did you pay it?"

"Because the signature was a perfect match," I said. "Whoever signed that document practiced his handwriting for months. The investigators were not going to care about his cowardly nature. They had the paper trail."

Julian dropped the papers onto the desk. He stared at the cashier's check as if it might catch fire.

"She thought I committed a felony," Julian murmured, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes. "She gave up the only thing she had left of her mother to cover my tracks. She swallowed the entire loss so I could keep the company."

"You called her a control freak," Ethan reminded him, his voice thinning out. "You told the police she hoarded the finances just to keep us on a leash."

"I was wrong," Julian whispered.

He dropped his hands. He picked the letter back up, his fingers gripping the edges tight enough to crumple the paper. He read the final sentence on the page.

His eyes widened. The guilt on his face vanished entirely, replaced by a stark, sudden panic.

He shot to his feet. The heavy mahogany chair tipped backward and slammed hard into the wall.

"Only Lila saw that blank loan form."
