Chapter 1

People always say marriage is built on trust. I used to believe that. Now I think marriage is built on tiny moments you don’t notice until they’re gone, a good morning kiss, waiting for each other before dinner, remembering how the other person takes their coffee. Or, in my case, convincing yourself those things don’t matter because you love your husband enough for the both of you.

I checked the time on my phone for the third time in five minutes. It was eight thirty-seven, and Damian was late again. I sighed, carrying the pot of seafood chowder to the dining table before stepping back to admire my work. Candles. Fresh flowers. His favorite meal. Even the wine he’d mentioned wanting to try last month. The soup would probably be cold before he got home. Honestly, if reheating dinner counted as a profession, I’d have won Employee of the Year three years in a row. The thought made me smile, but it faded almost immediately when I heard the front door open.

Finally. I smoothed the wrinkles from my dress and hurried toward the foyer. “You’re home.”

The words died on my lips. Damian wasn’t alone. A woman stood beside him. She looked exhausted. Her long dark hair was tied into a loose ponytail, and an oversized coat hung from her shoulders despite the warm evening. Her face was pale enough to worry anyone. I recognized her instantly. Sophia Blake. His first love. The woman everyone insisted he’d eventually forget. The woman I spent three years pretending didn’t exist.

For a second, neither of us spoke. Then Damian broke the silence. “Vivian.” His voice sounded exactly the same as it always did, calm, controlled, businesslike, as though bringing another woman into our home without warning was perfectly normal. “This is Sophia.”

“I know who she is.” The words came out softer than I intended.

Sophia offered an awkward smile. “I’m sorry for showing up like this.”

“It’s alright.” And strangely, it was. Not because I wasn’t surprised, but because she looked sick. Really sick.

I stepped aside. “Come in.” She hesitated before walking inside. Damian followed behind her, closing the door with a quiet click. Something about the atmosphere immediately felt wrong. No one spoke as we walked toward the living room. No one commented on dinner. No one mentioned why Sophia was here. Even the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed louder than usual, ticking away as if counting down to something. I hated that clock. It always reminded me how long Damian worked every day.

We sat. I folded my hands together to stop myself from fidgeting. “So…” I looked between them. “What’s going on?”

Damian answered first. “Sophia has leukemia.”

My heart stopped. “What?”

Sophia lowered her eyes. “I was diagnosed three months ago.”

For a moment, I forgot everything else, the awkwardness, the history between them, the questions racing through my head. All I saw was a woman whose entire future had been turned upside down. “Oh my God.” I reached across the coffee table and gently squeezed her hand. “I’m so sorry.”

She smiled weakly. “Thank you.”

“The doctors have been searching for a bone marrow donor,” Damian continued.

I nodded immediately. “I hope they found one.”

“They did.”

Relief flooded through me. “That’s wonderful.”

He looked directly at me. “The donor is you.”

I blinked. “I’m sorry?”

“You’re the match.”

For a second, I genuinely thought he was joking, not because bone marrow donation was funny, but because the coincidence sounded impossible. “There has to be a mistake.”

“There isn’t.” He reached into his briefcase and placed a medical file on the coffee table. “The hospital confirmed the results yesterday.”

I stared at the folder. My name was printed across the top, beside words I barely understood: compatibility, donation, transplant. Everything suddenly felt very real. “I…” I swallowed. “I don’t understand.”

“The transplant needs to happen next week.”

I looked up sharply. “Next week?”

“Yes.”

“I haven’t even agreed.”

“It needs to happen.”

The certainty in his voice made my stomach twist. He wasn’t asking. He wasn’t hoping. He’d already decided.

Sophia suddenly spoke. “Damian…”

He ignored her. “The sooner we proceed, the higher her chances.”

I looked from him to Sophia, then back again. “I’m sorry.” My voice trembled despite my best effort to stay calm. “I need time.”

“There isn’t time.”

“I said I need time.”

“The hospital explained the procedure this afternoon.”

“They explained it.” I nodded. “They didn’t also explain the risks?”

His expression remained unchanged. “The risks are minimal.”

Minimal. Such a convenient word. A one percent chance sounded minimal until you became the one person. “There could be complications.”

“They’re uncommon.”

“They still happen.”

Silence settled between us. I looked at Sophia again. She looked miserable. “I truly am sorry you’re going through this.” I meant every word. “But this isn’t a simple blood test.”

Sophia nodded immediately. “I know.”

“You don’t have to…”

“She does,” Damian interrupted.

“No.” I turned toward him. “No, I don’t.”

His jaw tightened. “Vivian.”

“I’ve read about bone marrow donation.” The memory surfaced immediately. My cousin had donated to her younger sister years ago. She recovered, eventually. But I still remembered visiting her in the hospital, the pain, the exhaustion, the weeks she spent unable to walk without help. People always focused on the happy ending. They rarely talked about everything that came before it. “What if something goes wrong?” I asked quietly.

“It won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“You’ll recover.”

I couldn’t help laughing, not because anything was funny, but because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You sound very confident for someone who isn’t getting surgery.”

His eyes narrowed slightly. “This isn’t about you.”

The words hit harder than I expected. I stared at him. “What?”

“This is about saving Sophia.”

“And what about me?”

He didn’t answer.

“My health matters too.”

“You’re healthy.”

“So?”

“Sophia isn’t.”

I felt my chest tighten. Three years. Three years of loving this man. Three years of defending him whenever my friends complained he worked too much. Three years of believing he loved me even if he wasn’t good at showing it. Suddenly, I wasn’t so sure. “What if I die?”

The room fell silent. Sophia looked horrified. “Please don’t say that.”

“I’m asking my husband.” I kept my eyes on Damian. “What if I don’t survive?”

He didn’t respond immediately. When he finally did, his voice remained calm. “The doctors said the chances are extremely low.”

“So there is a chance.”

“It won’t happen.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know enough you’ll be fine.”

“No.” I slowly stood and wrapped my arms around myself. The room suddenly felt colder. “You don’t. I’m scared.” There. I admitted, because it was the truth. “I don’t want surgery. I don’t want complications. I don’t want months of recovery. I don’t want to gamble with my own life.”

Damian stood as well. “If you refuse, Sophia dies.”

His words landed like stones. I looked at Sophia. Tears streamed silently down her face. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I really am.”

She shook her head. “Vivian…” Then she surprised both of us. “Damian, stop.”

He looked at her. “I don’t want her forced into this.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do. If she says no, we’ll keep searching.”

“There isn’t another match.”

“Then I’ll wait.”

“You don’t have time.”

“I said stop.”

For the first time since she’d arrived, there was strength in Sophia’s voice. I watched them in silence. Something wasn’t right. She seemed genuinely uncomfortable. Damian, on the other hand, looked impatient, as though this entire conversation was delaying an important meeting.

He walked toward the dining room without another word. I followed automatically. Sophia remained behind. When I reached the table, Damian opened his briefcase and removed several documents, hospital forms, medical reports, then one final envelope. He placed everything neatly in front of me. “The consent forms.”

I stared at them. “You already prepared all this?”

“Yes.”

“You assumed I’d agree.”

“I assumed you’d do the right thing.” His voice hardened. “You’re being selfish.”

I looked up slowly. “Selfish?”

“If you refuse, you’ll be responsible for Sophia’s death.”

“You know what?” My voice barely rose above a whisper. “I’ve spent three years trying to become the wife you deserved. I learned your schedule. I remembered every anniversary. I memorized your coffee order even though you changed it every six months. I defended you whenever people said you cared more about work than your marriage.” I looked directly into his eyes. “And today…” I took a shaky breath. “…you’re calling me selfish because I’m afraid of dying.”

His expression didn’t soften. Not even a little. “If that’s how you want to see it.”

My heart broke. I searched his face one last time, looking for hesitation, regret, anything. There was nothing. Without a word, he reached into the envelope and pulled out another document. This one wasn’t from the hospital. I recognized the law firm’s letterhead immediately. Ashford & Cole. The attorneys who handled every legal matter for the family. My stomach dropped.

Damian placed the document beside the consent form. Divorce Petition. I looked at him in disbelief. “You can’t be serious.”

“You have until tomorrow morning.”

“You would divorce me over this?”

“I won’t stay married to someone who can save a life and chooses not to.”

Tears finally blurred my vision because of how easily he said it, as though ending our marriage required no more emotion than canceling a business contract. My hands trembled as I looked down at the two documents lying side by side. One asked for my bone marrow. The other asked for my marriage. Damian slowly pushed both papers across the table until they stopped directly in front of me.

“Sign one of these, Vivian.”

I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t even wipe away the tears sliding silently down my face. His next words shattered whatever hope I still had. “Either the surgery consent form… or the divorce papers.”
