Chapter 5

I didn't sleep. Neither did he.

I heard him through the wall of the guest room most of the night, the creak of the floorboards by the window, the low scrape of a chair. Around four, the pacing stopped. By then I was already lying awake with my hand over the moonstone, feeling my wolf pace in circles right under my skin, restless and warm and impatient.

At dawn I pulled on leggings and an old flannel shirt and went down to the back door.

Tristan was in the kitchen. Same clothes as last night, sleeves shoved to his elbows, a mug of coffee he clearly hadn't touched going cold in front of him. He looked up when I came in, and his eyes went straight to my bare feet.

"Where are you going?"

He'd asked. Again. I noticed that.

"Out back," I said. "I'm going to try to shift."

He stood up so fast the stool skidded across the tile.

"No."

"I wasn't asking."

"Aria." He came around the island. "The last time you tried, you were unconscious for six hours. The time before that, Dr. Hale said your heart rate dropped so low she thought we were going to lose you. You don't remember it. I do. I carried you in from the yard."

I did remember. Not the fainting, but the moment before it. My spine locking halfway through the change, my joints grinding against something that wouldn't give, and the terrible sense that my wolf was trying to reach me through a wall I couldn't see. Afterward I'd woken up in our bed with Tristan sitting beside me, and he'd said, *Maybe it's time to stop forcing it.*

So I'd stopped.

"That was before," I said.

"Before what? Before three strange days and a necklace?" He shook his head. "You don't know what's happening to you. I don't either. That's exactly why you're not going out there alone."

"Then come with me."

I reached for the back door.

His hand closed around my wrist.

It wasn't rough. His grip was careful, almost gentle, his thumb resting right over my pulse. His palm was cold. I could feel the faint tremor still running through his fingers, the same one I'd seen at Gideon's table.

"Don't shift," he said. "I'm not letting you hurt yourself."

I looked down at his hand on my arm.

Then I looked at him. The bloodshot eyes. The stubble. The line between his brows that had been getting deeper all week. He'd been afraid all night. I could smell it on him, stale and thin under the cedar. I believed him. I believed he'd carried me in from the yard, and that he'd sat by that bed, and that some part of him had been scared out of his mind.

But that wasn't what he'd said.

He hadn't said *I'm scared*. He hadn't said *please don't*, or *I couldn't stand to see that again*, or even *wait until Dr. Hale's here*.

He'd said *I'm not letting you.*

Five years, and I'd never been able to tell the difference. His worry and his orders came out of his mouth sounding exactly the same, and I'd obeyed both, because I couldn't figure out which one I was hearing. Maybe he couldn't either.

"Do you hear yourself?" I asked quietly.

"I'm trying to keep you safe."

"You're trying to keep me in the kitchen."

"That's not fair."

"Isn't it?" I didn't raise my voice. "You could have said you were afraid. You could have asked me to wait. You could have asked me anything at all. You went straight to *not letting me*, Tristan. Like it's yours to allow."

His grip tightened a fraction. Not hard enough to hurt. Just enough to feel it.

I turned my hand over inside his fingers and drew it back. I didn't pull, didn't jerk away. I just kept going, inch by inch, until his fingertips slid off my wrist and he was holding nothing.

"You don't get to decide whether I try," I said.

I opened the door and stepped out into the cold.

The grass was wet and silver with frost. The pines at the edge of the property were black against a pale gray sky, and the air smelled like cold earth and woodsmoke and the creek running high somewhere past the ridge. I walked until the lawn gave way to dead leaves, then stopped and closed my eyes.

*Now?* I asked.

*Now,* my wolf said.

Behind me, the door banged open.

"Aria, stop."

The command hit me square between the shoulder blades.

This time it wasn't softened. He'd put everything behind it, the full, crushing weight of an Alpha who had never once in his life been disobeyed by his own mate. It poured down over me like cold water, into my ears and my lungs and the backs of my knees. My legs started to fold. My chin started to drop. Every nerve in my body knew this shape. *Kneel. Lower your eyes. Be still.*

My wolf didn't snarl.

She planted her feet.

I felt her do it. Felt her set herself against that weight like a shoulder against a door, and I did it with her. My knees locked. My head came back up. The pressure dragged at me, and I dragged back, and for one long moment we just hung there, the two of us straining against the man in the doorway.

I turned around and looked at him.

"No."

It came out of me low and clear, and it broke something open.

The first crack was my spine. Not the grinding lock from before but a clean, sharp snap, then another, then a rolling cascade of them down my back like knuckles popping. Heat punched out from under the moonstone and flooded my veins. I dropped forward onto my hands, and my hands were already changing, fingers pulling in, nails darkening and lengthening into claws that sank into the frozen dirt.

It hurt. It hurt the way it's supposed to hurt, the good kind, the kind my mother used to describe when I was twelve and scared of my first change. *Like stretching after a long sleep, baby. Only bigger.*

Something that had been folded up tight inside me for five years was unfolding all at once.

My jaw lengthened. My shoulders broadened, and kept broadening. Fur tore through my skin in a hot, prickling wave. The flannel shirt split down the back with a ripping sound I barely heard. I could hear everything else. The creek. A crow in the far pines. Tristan's heart, hammering so fast it was almost one continuous sound.

And then it was done, and I was standing.

I shook out my coat. Frost scattered off me in a glittering spray.

The world was sharper than I'd ever known it. I could see every separate needle on the pines, every blade of frozen grass. I could smell Tristan's fear, bright and metallic now, and under it something that took me a second to name.

Awe.

I looked down at my paws. They were enormous. And the fur on them wasn't the patchy, dull gray everyone in the pack remembered, the small, skittish wolf who'd trailed behind Tristan's runs and never quite kept up.

It was silver. Pure, gleaming silver, catching the dawn light like the chain around my throat.

I lifted my head and met Tristan's eyes.

We were almost level.

He'd come down off the porch. He was standing ten feet away on the frosted lawn, barefoot, his mouth open, and I realized that in this body I was nearly as tall as his wolf would be at the shoulder. Maybe not quite. Close enough that it didn't matter.

He took one step toward me.

Then he stopped, and his whole body jerked.

Gold flooded his eyes, his wolf surging up to the surface without any warning. I watched his hands clench into fists and his teeth bare. I watched him fight whatever was happening inside him, the tendons standing out in his neck.

It didn't help.

His shoulders curled forward. His chin came down, down, pulled by something he clearly wasn't choosing. His eyes stayed locked on mine, wide and horrified, even as his wolf dragged his head lower and lower until his gaze broke from mine and dropped to the frozen grass between us.

Tristan Vale, Alpha of the pack, stood in his own backyard with his head bowed.

To me.
