I Returned as the Nanny to the Daughter They Stole From Me

Seven hours after my daughter was born, they forged my signature, buried the paperwork, and handed her to one of the country's most powerful men. They told the world she was gone. I never believed them. For five years I searched until a photograph revealed Lily Blackwood, six years old, with my own stubborn tilt of the head. Now I work inside Blackwood Manor as her nanny, close enough to hear her laugh, close enough to notice she knows the lullaby I wrote for my unborn child. Damian Blackwood is cold, controlled, always watching, yet he lets me stay when he should send me away. Every secret in this house leads back to the night she vanished, and someone will do anything to keep me from reclaiming her.

Chapter 1

"Please give her back!" I screamed until my throat burned.

The nurse flinched and clutched the tiny bundle tighter against her chest. "You need to calm down, Miss Sterling."

"My daughter." I tried to push myself upright, but agony ripped through my body before I could sit. "That's my daughter."

Rain battered the windows hard enough to drown almost every other sound in the room, and years later it would still be the first thing I remembered — not the smell of antiseptic filling the private clinic, not the sterile white walls, not even the sound of my own desperate screams, but the relentless rain sliding down the glass, as though the world had already decided to grieve for me before I understood what had been taken.

My baby was only seven hours old — seven precious hours that I had counted every single minute of. I knew the weight of her tiny body against my chest, the delicate curl of her fingers around mine, and the way she turned instinctively toward my voice, as though she already recognized it from the months she had spent listening to my heartbeat. I had whispered her name against her forehead and made the only promise every new mother makes without ever needing to say it aloud.

I will protect you.

She wasn't supposed to leave me.

The door opened, and a doctor walked in, his face carefully composed though he couldn't quite bring himself to meet my eyes.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

The nurse froze, and a knot tightened in my stomach.

"I'm sorry for what?"

For a long moment he simply looked at me before finally speaking.

"Your daughter didn't survive."

Everything inside me went still, and I stared at him, then laughed because the words were too absurd to believe.

"My daughter is right there."

I turned toward the nurse, but her arms were empty, and when I blinked once, then again, the bassinet beside my bed was empty too, and the room seemed to tilt violently around me.

"There was a complication," the doctor said with practiced sympathy. "A rare cardiac event."

"You're lying."

"I'm very sorry."

"You're lying!"

I tried to climb out of bed, but pain tore through every inch of my body, and hands grabbed my shoulders before I could stand. Someone shouted for security, but I fought anyway, clawing against anyone who tried to hold me back.

"Bring her back!" I screamed until my voice cracked. "Bring me my baby!"

Outside, the rain hammered against the windows with a merciless rhythm, and nobody brought my daughter back.

Beneath the unbearable grief, however, something colder settled inside me: certainty. My daughter was alive.

The doctors called it grief. The counselors called it trauma. Everyone had a different explanation, but they all reached the same conclusion: they believed my daughter was dead.

I stopped arguing. I told them I was healing, thanked them for their concern, and let them believe I had finally accepted the truth, and the moment they stopped watching me, I began searching.

Every spare hour and every cent I earned went toward finding my daughter as I followed rumors, checked records, and chased leads that always ended in disappointment, and almost six years passed before one lead finally refused to disappear.

I hired a private investigator, and six months later, she placed a photograph in front of me.

"This is all I could find," she said quietly.

The little girl in the photograph had dark hair, solemn eyes, and the same slight tilt of her head I remembered from the seven precious hours I had held my newborn, and according to public records, her name was Lily Blackwood.

From that day on, every decision I made had only one purpose. I earned childcare qualifications, worked with children, and built the kind of experience that could get me hired inside the Blackwood estate.

Now I stood outside Blackwood Manor with a single suitcase and a reference letter that didn't belong to me, knowing that somewhere beyond those gates lived a little girl who might be my daughter.

I pressed the intercom, and a woman's voice answered immediately.

"Name?"

"Evelyn Sterling. I'm expected."

After a brief pause, the iron gates slowly opened, and I stepped through them, trying to steady my breathing. I had imagined this moment for almost six years, expecting terror, expecting triumph, but instead I felt strangely calm.

I had finally made it, and all I had to do was keep myself together.

Then I heard the screaming, and I stopped dead.

It wasn't ordinary crying — it was the kind of desperate scream that came from a child whose heart was breaking, and every instinct inside me recognized that sound.

The scream came again, and my heart slammed painfully against my ribs, so I let go of my suitcase and ran.

Inside the manor, servants hurried across the entrance hall with anxious faces while a man barked urgently into his phone and a maid looked ready to burst into tears, but no one stopped me.

The screams came from upstairs, growing louder with every step I climbed, and it wasn't a tantrum but grief, the kind that left a child beyond the reach of comfort or words.

When I reached the upper corridor, several servants stood in a helpless circle, and they instinctively moved aside as I approached.

Then I saw her.

She sat on the polished floor, small for her age, with dark hair spilling around tear-stained cheeks. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and her tiny hands twisted the fabric of her dress until her knuckles had turned white, every sob shaking her fragile body as though her heart were breaking faster than it could heal.

A maid knelt beside her.

"Miss Lily, please..."

The little girl didn't seem to hear a word.

I took one careful step forward, and she looked up.

Our eyes met, and everything inside me stopped — dark eyes, quiet eyes, eyes far older than any six-year-old should possess. She stared at me, and I stared back, and her crying faltered, then stopped completely.

The servants disappeared. The corridor disappeared. There was only her.

Slowly, she climbed to her feet and walked toward me, one hesitant step after another, until she stood directly in front of me, and I couldn't breathe.

She reached out with both hands and wrapped them around mine, her fingers warm, small, and perfect.

The desperate edge of her sobbing melted away, and though tears still glistened on her cheeks and her chest still trembled with uneven breaths, something inside her had finally found a place to rest.

She looked up at me, her voice barely more than a whisper.

"I don't know you... but you feel like someone I've been waiting for."
