Chapter 3

Aria POV

Cyrus dimmed the lights with a remote, a triumphant smirk playing on his lips. He clicked the mouse on the laptop connected to the large screen mounted above the fireplace.

I stood frozen beside him, my body braced for impact. I risked a glance at Brianna, who had a look of nervous, almost giddy anticipation on her face, like a child on Christmas morning.

The first few photos were normal. Deceptively normal. Cyrus and me in Paris, smiling under the Eiffel Tower. At a gala in San Francisco, his arm possessive around my waist. A calculated performance of a perfect life.

A flicker of confusion went through me. Was I wrong? Was this just...a normal slideshow?

Then, the soft, romantic music abruptly cut off, replaced by a moody, atmospheric indie track I'd never heard before. The photos of me vanished.

The screen filled with a video. Not a slideshow. A montage.

Intimate moments of Cyrus and Brianna.

Here. In this apartment.

Cyrus laughing as he lifted Brianna up to sit on the kitchen counter. Him gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear as they stood on the balcony, the city lights twinkling behind them. Them sharing a look of deep, conspiratorial affection while curled up on the very sofa I had just knelt beside.

Every "late night at the lab" for me, every "business trip" for him, was a lie. The evidence played out in high definition, a cinematic catalog of his betrayal.

The final clip was them kissing. Not a peck, but a long, passionate kiss, right in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, the Golden Gate Bridge a postcard-perfect backdrop to their treachery.

My blood ran cold. The air in my lungs turned to ice. I looked at the videographer, Marco. His face was a mask of horror and confusion. This was not the video file he had been given.

My phone, clutched in my hand, buzzed violently. I looked down. The caller ID read: Maria — UCSF Caregiver.

I snatched the phone to my ear, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Maria?"

The caregiver was sobbing, her words choked and frantic. "Aria! Your grandmother...she was watching the livestream...she saw...oh, God, Aria, she collapsed! The doctors are with her now!"

The world tilted on its axis. The floor fell away. The one thing I had endured this entire nightmare to prevent...had happened anyway. Because of him.

A guttural scream ripped from my throat. "WHAT DID YOU DO?!" I shrieked at Cyrus, shoving past him and running for the door.

He grabbed my arm, his grip like steel. "Where do you think you're going? We have guests." His public facade was cracking under the strain.

"Let go of me," I snarled, my voice a low, dangerous growl I didn't know I possessed. "Or I swear to God, I will kill you."

My raw ferocity must have startled him, because his grip loosened for a fraction of a second. It was enough. I tore free and sprinted out of the apartment, not even stopping for my shoes, the cold marble of the hallway shocking my bare feet.

I hailed a cab on the street, my mind a blank loop of terror. "UCSF Medical Center," I gasped to the driver. "Please, hurry."

I arrived at the hospital and ran through the sterile corridors to the ICU, my cheap white dress feeling like a shroud. I found Dr. Hayes and a distraught Maria waiting for me.

Dr. Hayes's face was grim. "Aria, it was a massive stroke. We're doing everything we can, but...her chances are slim."

He handed me a clipboard with a stack of papers. Consent forms. DNR papers. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the pen. Each signature felt like a nail being hammered into my grandmother's coffin.

I sat by Elena's bedside for hours, holding her still, warm hand, whispering apologies into the quiet beeping of the machines.

Later, I didn't know how much later, Cyrus and Brianna arrived. Cyrus had arranged his face into a mask of concern. Brianna, however, was genuinely hysterical.

She didn't go to me. She rushed to Cyrus, clinging to his arm and sobbing. "This is all my fault! It's too much! The wedding, Elena collapsing..."

Her words tumbled out in a panicked, incoherent rush. "We should have just let it go! We should have withdrawn the complaint to the ethics committee!"

I froze. Every muscle in my body went rigid. I turned my head slowly, my eyes locking onto Brianna's tear-streaked face.

Cyrus's face paled. He tried to silence her, his voice a harsh whisper. "Bree, calm down. You're not making sense."

But it was too late. Brianna, lost in her own selfish distress, plowed on. "Aria is so proud! I knew she'd be devastated if she couldn't graduate because of it! I told you it was a bad idea! I told you!"

The final piece of the puzzle clicked into place with the force of a physical blow.

It wasn't a rival. It wasn't just Cyrus.

It was Brianna. My best friend. My sister. The woman I had loved and protected. She had orchestrated the potential destruction of my entire life's work.

The betrayal was now absolute. A perfect, monstrous, complete thing.

I slowly stood up, an unnatural calm descending over me as the beeping from Elena's room flatlined in the background. I looked from Brianna's panicked face to Cyrus's guilty one, and for the first time, I understood everything.
