Chapter 2

The Dead Daughter

Gravel popped under the tires.

Oakridge sat at the end of the drive, a stone pile the rich used when a relative became inconvenient. Gothic windows. Perfect lawn. The kind of quiet that cost extra.

"Ready?" Julian asked.

"I have been ready."

Rain found the collar of my coat before I reached the doors. Inside, bleach sat over everything.

"Dr. Thorne," the charge nurse said. "We were not expecting you."

"I need to see Helen Ward."

"She is having a bad night. We moved her to isolation."

"Take us."

The corridor was long and white. My shoes made no sound. Each door we passed felt like another year I had not been allowed to walk this hall.

"If anyone from the Sterling circle sees you—"

"They will see a stranger." I touched my jaw. "You made sure of that."

"I rebuilt the bone so you could eat and speak. I did not do it so you could hunt him."

"It works for both."

"Liam has people everywhere."

"He is looking for a twenty-two-year-old who flinched when a door closed. He is not looking at me."

"Do not be reckless."

"I do not make promises I cannot keep."

The orderly opened a steel door. It complained on its hinges.

My mother sat in the corner. Padded walls. Institutional cotton. White hair thin against her scalp. Once she had worn red lipstick into rooms that quieted when she spoke. Now she picked at a thread on her knee and did not look up.

"Mom."

Nothing.

"It was not your fault," she told the floor.

I knelt. "I am here."

"He lied to you." Her voice was dry paper. "Do not trust Liam. Do not trust Liam."

My nails found my palms. The sting kept me in the room. She was a loop of old terror. Looking at her lit something in my chest that was not grief. Grief was soft. This was not.

"She has not slept in two days," Julian said from the door.

"They keep her under."

"They keep her from tearing her own skin. The trauma took her mind, Evelyn."

"The Sterlings took her mind."

He adjusted his glasses. "She still does not know you."

"How would she? I do not know this face either."

"The work was clean."

"You were clean. You were incoming director at Johns Hopkins. You did not have to take a girl they pulled out of a river."

"They found you in a car under a bridge with a crushed skull. You needed someone who would not file you under charity and forget you."

"I drove off that bridge because I wanted the water to finish what he started."

"It did not."

"Arthur Sterling thought it did." I almost laughed. "Eight million. That was the number on the check he sent your hospital. Pay the surgeons. Lose the file. Make sure no one said his son ran his stepsister into the river."

"I did not take that money for him. I took it so you had a bed and a name no one could find."

"I know." The edge left my voice for a second. "You kept me alive. They still killed the girl who went into the water."

"Every dollar of that check went to you."

"I used it. Five years in Switzerland. A new face. A doctorate. I learned how a mind comes apart."

"You learned how to put one back."

"Same tools."

I touched my mother's cheek. Paper. No heat.

"I am going to fix this."

Her rocking stopped.

Her eyes found mine. For one thin second the fog lifted and a person looked out.

"He lied to everyone," she whispered.

"Liam?"

"Arthur." Her fingers closed on my wrist hard enough to hurt. "Arthur lied."

"About what?"

"The crash. The fire. I did not kill her. I did not kill his wife."

Air left me.

For five years I had carried Liam's sentence like a fact. My mother died because of yours. This is your bill. I had let him lock the door. I had let him film me. I had believed we owed him blood.

"Mom. Did Arthur set you up?"

She screamed.

The person in her eyes went out. She hit at things that were not there.

"The flames. The flames."

"Evelyn. Let go," Julian said.

"Tell me what happened."

Two orderlies came in fast. One had a syringe. I fought Julian's arm and got nowhere.

"Do not put that in her."

"She will hurt herself. Let them work."

The needle went in. The scream thinned to a sound with no words. She folded against the padding.

In the hall the door clicked and cut her off.

I put my back to the wall. My heart was too loud.

"You heard her."

"She is sick. You cannot build a case on one clear minute."

"I saw her eyes. Arthur lied about the crash that killed Liam's mother."

"The report said your mother was drunk. She hit their car."

"Reports get bought. Especially by men who own the county." I pushed off the wall. "If she did not kill Eleanor Sterling, then Liam spent four years breaking me for a story."

Julian already had his phone out. "I will get a private investigator tonight. Crash file. Autopsy. The original scene notes."

"Fast."

"Arthur Sterling sits on half the benches in this state. If you call him a killer—"

"I am not going to call him anything. I am going to prove it."

"Five years is a long time for paper to vanish."

"People do not vanish. The driver. The paramedics. The chief who signed the report. Someone took his money."

"I have a contact in Boston PD. Unredacted files by morning."

"Good."

"If Liam believed the story, it explains the hate."

"It does not explain the camera." My voice came out thin and hard. "He locked the study. He put me on the floor. He recorded me begging. That was not grief. He liked it."

"I know."

I looked at myself in the dark glass of the observation window. New jaw. Cold eyes. A woman I had paid for with bone and silence.

They had taken her mind. They had taken my face. They had taken the years I was supposed to be young.

"They owe us," I said.

"How do you collect?"

"Tomorrow night. Get the dress ready."

I looked through the pane once more. She was still on the floor. Still small.

I did not knock on the glass. She would not have known the sound.

In the car I sat with my coat still wet and counted the things I now had that I had not had at twenty-two.

A name that was not hers and not his. A face the cameras would not match on the first pass. A doctor who kept files I could not keep myself. A mother who had said Arthur's name with a clear mouth.

It was not enough. It was a start.

Julian drove with both hands on the wheel. He did not fill the quiet. I was grateful. Words would have turned the hallway into a speech, and I was not ready to dress it up.

"The dress," I said, when the gates of Oakridge were only rain in the mirror.

"It is at the hotel."

"Black."

"I know."

I watched the trees go past and thought of red lipstick on a woman who used to quiet a room. I thought of a thread on a cotton knee. I put the two pictures on top of each other until they became one debt.

Tomorrow night I would walk into a museum full of people who had toasted the Sterlings for a hundred years.

I would not toast. I would stand where Liam could see me and let his own mind do the first damage.
