Chapter 2

"Stop pretending that offer means anything," Noah said, wrenching the leather folder from my hands.

The clasp sprang open. My degrees, appraisal certificates, and the signed appointment letter from the Boston Children's Museum slid across the carpet.

Noah picked up the letter. His eyes moved over the salary, the start date, and the line naming me senior conservator of mechanical collections.

"You accepted this three days ago." He looked up. "Before Milo's party."

"I accepted it after you told Paige at dinner that my work was a hobby and the study would make a perfect dressing room for her."

"That was a joke."

"So was Milo's birthday wish, apparently. Your jokes keep requiring me to surrender something."

He crushed the corner of the letter. "You planned to walk out on us."

"I planned a way to support myself after years of doing unpaid preservation work for your firm. Walking out became necessary tonight."

Noah tossed the folder onto the bed. "You cannot take Milo to some cramped apartment and turn his life upside down."

"I am not taking him tonight. My attorney will propose a temporary parenting schedule in the morning."

The certainty left his face. "You retained a lawyer?"

"Yes."

"Without telling me?"

"You discussed replacing me with our son without telling me. I decided discretion was allowed in this marriage."

His cigarette had burned close to the filter. I took it from his fingers, stubbed it out in an empty glass, and moved the glass away from my clothes.

"Do not smoke around my archival materials," I said.

"They are papers, Emma. Stop acting as though every object you touch belongs in a museum."

"Those papers established the preservation methods your firm used on three municipal contracts. You put your logo on the reports and called my contribution marital support."

"We built my firm together."

"Then you should have credited and paid me."

He stared at me as if I had started speaking another language. In eight years, he had never considered that the hours I spent correcting his historical specifications possessed a market value.

Downstairs, Milo shrieked with laughter. The remote-control dinosaur struck a wall, followed by the crash of a side table.

"Careful, buddy," Paige called, laughing instead of intervening.

I placed my padded tool rolls in the suitcase. Each brush, loupe, and micro-file had been purchased with freelance income Noah dismissed as pocket money. I photographed the open case, then the serial numbers on the larger instruments.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"Creating an inventory before anything disappears."

"Paige is not a thief."

"I did not name Paige."

His immediate defense told me everything.

Noah moved between me and the door. "Sleep on this. In the morning, you will realize you are angry and embarrassed. We will tell the guests you had a migraine."

"Move."

"Emma, listen to yourself. You are going to destroy an eight-year marriage because a six-year-old said something cruel."

"Milo repeated what you taught him. I am leaving because you taught him that cruelty was funny."

The bedroom door opened. Paige leaned against the frame, still holding a champagne flute. "Everyone is leaving. Milo wants to know who is making his breakfast."

"His father," I said.

Her smile faltered. "Noah has an early client call."

"Then his happy mom can manage oatmeal. Read every label. His severe dye allergy is documented in the binder beside the pantry."

Paige glanced at Noah. Neither of them knew which binder I meant.

Milo appeared behind her, clutching the T-Rex controller. "Are you still mad?"

I crouched so he could see my face. "I am hurt, Milo. Those are not the same thing."

"Daddy said you always forgive me."

Noah went still.

"I love you," I told my son. "But loving you does not mean pretending your words did no harm. Tomorrow, the adults will make a plan. Tonight, you stay with Dad."

"Make my dinosaur pancakes first."

"No."

His lower lip trembled. Paige reached for his shoulder, perhaps expecting another performance. Milo looked from her to Noah and realized no one was volunteering.

I stood, closed the suitcase, and carried my restoration case into the study. The lock clicked behind me.

At midnight, I emailed my inventory photographs to Marina Adler, the family attorney I had consulted the previous week. I attached the museum offer and a summary of the birthday conversation. Her reply came before one.

Leave the keys. Take only documented personal and professional property. I will file the separation notice at opening tomorrow.

I set my alarm for five-thirty. On the other side of the locked door, Noah told Paige I would be reasonable by breakfast.

Before closing my laptop, I changed the password on the private cloud folder that contained my restoration notes and downloaded an access log. Noah's firm had opened those files dozens of times during the past year. I had called it cooperation. Adler would decide which entries constituted unauthorized commercial use.

I also opened an individual bank account for my museum salary and redirected my freelance royalties. I did not drain a joint account or hide marital funds. I separated the income I would earn after leaving and preserved a clear paper trail.

Sarah answered on the first ring when I called. "I have a guest room," she said. "You do not need to explain."

"The museum arranged temporary housing, but I may need a witness when the movers arrive."

"I will be there at five-forty-five."

Her certainty steadied me. Leaving was not a tantrum performed for Noah. It was a sequence of practical choices, each one documented and complete.

At five-thirty, Sarah arrived and compared every blue inventory tag with the photographs I had sent. She signed the mover's checklist as a witness. We spoke in whispers so Milo could sleep through the handoff, and I left his medical binder open on the kitchen island for Noah. I was leaving the marriage, not creating a medical trap for my son.

I slept for four quiet hours and woke knowing he was wrong.
