Chapter 5

Three square cardboard takeout boxes sat on the center of the dining table.

I stopped in the arched doorway of the kitchen, gripping the twisted paper handles of my hospital bag. The overhead lights reflected off the grease-stained lids. Three boxes. For a family of three.

"Alpha Jace thought you would stay overnight in the observation ward," Clara murmured, wiping down the granite island with a white cloth. "He only ordered dinner for himself, Owen, and Talia."

I glanced past the dining room into the living area. Talia’s thick wool blanket and her white ceramic mug rested on the armchair closest to the stone fireplace. She had moved her things out of the guest room. She was settling into the center of my home.

Footsteps sounded on the hardwood staircase. Jace hurried down, stopping when he saw me standing by the archway.

"Maya," he said, reaching out to support my elbow. "You should be resting. Let me help you upstairs."

I stepped back, dodging his grip completely. "I am only here to pack my identification and some clothes."

Jace frowned, lowering his arm. "You just lost a pregnancy. You are running on high stress and exhaustion. Do not make permanent decisions right now."

"Why is my pain only worth your attention when I am walking out the door?" I asked.

On the leather sofa, Owen kept his eyes glued to his plastic game console. He did not look up. He sat exactly where he always did, acting as if he only had to wait five minutes for me to ask if he had showered, waiting for me to check his bedtime medication.

I walked past them both and headed straight for the master bedroom.

I pulled a black duffel bag from the top shelf of the closet. I did not empty the entire wardrobe. I packed three pairs of jeans, a few shirts, my passport, and the empty wooden jewelry box my mother left me. I set the brown paper hospital bag gently on top of the folded clothes.

Jace pushed the bedroom door open, stepping inside. "Talia was having a severe reaction, Maya. I could not split myself in two."

"The issue was never about who you saved first," I told him, zipping the duffel shut. "I was bleeding on the floor. You spent those crucial seconds judging whether I was performing for your attention."

"She had a documented allergy," Jace argued, stepping closer to the bed. "The empty wrapper was in your cabinet. I reacted to the evidence in front of me."

"Your son told you not to believe me," I said, meeting his gaze. "He told you I was faking it. You did not correct him."

Jace rubbed the back of his neck, his shoulders tensing. "Owen was confused. And you really never liked Talia, Maya. You made that obvious from the day she arrived."

He still needed me to carry the blame for the traps she set.

I reached for my left hand. My fingers brushed the cool metal of my silver mate ring. I slid it over my knuckle and set it flat on the mahogany nightstand. The sharp clink of metal against wood echoed in the quiet room.

"Maya," Jace warned, his voice dropping an octave, his hands balling into fists at his sides.

I grabbed the duffel straps and walked out of the room.

Owen stood at the bottom of the staircase, blocking the final step. He did not ask how I felt. He did not apologize for his silence at the hospital.

"Can you find my school uniform for tomorrow?" Owen asked, crossing his arms. "Talia does not know where you put it."

I stopped on the second step, looking down at my ten-year-old son.

"Your uniform is on the second shelf on the left side of your closet," I said. "The emergency medication card is taped inside the kitchen cabinet. The school backup contacts are listed on the fridge. You need to update the expiration dates on your riding pouch by next Tuesday."

Owen scrunched his nose. "Why are you talking like you are going away for a long time?"

"Because your father needs to learn how to do these things from now on," I replied.

Owen stomped his foot against the floorboards, his face turning an angry shade of red. "You are just punishing us! Talia said a real mom does not leave when her kid needs her!"

I adjusted the heavy bag on my shoulder. "Loving you and staying in a house that refuses to believe me are two different things."

I pulled out my phone, opened the family tracking application, and disabled the automatic location sharing on his pediatric communicator. The green dot next to my name vanished from the screen.

I walked past him toward the front door.

Jace caught up to me on the front porch. The cold night air hit my face, biting through my thin jacket.

"I am your Alpha," Jace commanded, planting his boots firmly on the wooden planks. "I am ordering you to stay in this house until you are medically cleared."

I pulled my phone back out. I dialed the Pack Council family protection line and put it on speaker.

"This is Luna Maya," I said into the microphone. "I am confirming my right to temporarily vacate my mate's residence and enter a neutral Pack sanctuary for medical recovery."

"Confirmed, Luna," the automated operator replied. "Sanctuary protocols are active."

Jace’s jaw went slack. The anger drained from his face, replaced by genuine, unfiltered fear. He realized this was not a tantrum he could wait out.

I walked down the steps and opened the trunk of my sedan. I tossed the duffel bag inside and slammed the lid shut. I opened the Council portal on my screen and submitted the mate-bond dissolution pre-filing.

Next, I opened our three-person family group chat.

I typed one sentence: The hospital said I need to recover, and I need a place where I do not have to prove whether I am hurting.

I hit send. I opened the driver's side door and slid into the seat.

"Mom!" Owen yelled, running out onto the porch steps. "Mom, stop!"

I started the engine. I did not hit the brakes.

A bright chime echoed from the porch. Jace pulled his phone from his pocket. The screen illuminated his pale face in the dark driveway. I knew exactly what the Council notification read: Dissolution Pre-Filing Accepted.

He snapped his head up, staring at me through the driver's side window.

I rolled the glass down exactly two inches.

"This time," I told him over the rumble of the engine, "I didn't fake leaving."

"How can you smile like that when neither of your fathers are here at your own wedding reception?" Pond asked, eyeing Dunk, who stood in the gallery, smiling towards his newly-wedded husband. Dunk's smile didn't waver, but his eyes darkened. He turned to Pond, voice sharp, "Do you think I don't care? That I'd go against them on purpose?" Pond responded without hesitation, "Aren't you doing exactly that?" "No, I'm not," Dunk snapped. His voice dropped lower, colder. "I'm standing here for my pride-the same pride he crushed. I'm not a child who goes crying to his parents. He destroyed me, P'Pond. Now it's my turn. I'm going to destroy his life-completely." Pond looked shaken. "You can't marry someone for revenge, Dunk. I told you-I'm here for you. I'll never let anyone from the Guthithanan family hurt you again." Dunk's voice cracked as he exploded, "But he crossed the line that night!" He scanned the room and quickly pulled Pond into a quieter corner. His voice was low and furious. "He shattered everything I had. And now, with this marriage, I'm going to make him live with the consequences. He's trapped with me now-forever. I won't let him walk away so easily." His gaze flicked across the room-directly to Joong, who stood beside Sarawat, calmly speaking to a business partner. Joong caught Dunk's stare and instinctively looked his way. Dunk raised his champagne glass with a mocking smile. A toast to war. Joong clenched his jaw, returning the gesture coolly-but his burning eyes slid to Pond, full of rage and warning.
