Chapter 2

Emma's POV

"I got the strawberry shortcake you love," Adrian announced. He kicked the front door shut behind him.

He held up the signature pink box from Southside Bakery by its string.

Noah trudged in next. He kicked his sneakers off so hard the left one smacked against the baseboard.

"The movie was stupid," my son complained, tossing his jacket onto the floor.

"You should have just come inside," Noah added. "You always ruin family time."

I had spent eight years monitoring his oxygen levels, sleeping in uncomfortable hospital chairs, and trading my career for his survival. Right now, looking at his defiant posture, I didn't recognize him at all.

"Is that right?" I asked. "How did I ruin it, Noah?"

"Because you made Dad wait for you," Noah shot back. "We missed the previews."

"Noah, don't speak to your mother like that," Adrian scolded lightly. His tone carried zero actual reprimand. He set the bakery box on the kitchen island and began untying the string. "We just missed you, that's all. It wasn't the same without you in the theater."

I traced the edge of the pink cardboard. "I'm sorry I missed it too. Was the bakery crowded today?"

Adrian didn't even blink.

"Wrapped around the block," my husband lied smoothly. He opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of sparkling water. "Took me twenty minutes just to reach the counter. You know how crazy that place gets on a Sunday."

"Yeah, and some lady stepped on Dad's shoe while we waited," Noah piped up.

My stomach dropped.

My seventeen-year-old had just invented a supporting detail for his father's alibi without a single stutter. He was learning how to deceive me from the man I married.

"A lady stepped on your shoe?" I repeated. I shifted my gaze to Adrian's pristine leather loafers. "That's terrible. Did she ruin the suede?"

"People are careless," Adrian replied, ignoring my pointed look at his spotless shoes. "I need a shower. The theater smelled like stale butter and cheap cologne."

"Did you get anything else at the bakery?" "They usually have those chocolate croissants Noah likes."

"They were sold out," Adrian answered, not missing a beat. "Just the cake today."

"Right," I murmured. "Sold out."

He crushed the plastic bottle and tossed it into the recycling bin.

"Go wash up," Adrian told Noah. "I'll cut the cake when we're both clean. Then we can play that new video game."

Noah took the stairs two at a time without looking at me.

Adrian paused at the bottom step. He turned back, his expression shifting into one of practiced concern. "Are you okay? You seem quiet. Did you have an asthma scare while we were gone?"

"Just a headache," I answered. "Take your time."

I abandoned the cake and walked straight into Adrian's home office.

He called it his encrypted vault for sensitive client data.

My corporate litigation days taught me that men like Adrian were arrogant, not clever.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and turned on the flashlight. I angled the beam against the black glass of the keypad, illuminating the oily smudges left by his fingers.

Four numbers. 1, 4, 7, 9.

Error.

I tried our anniversary. Error.

I paused. The muffled sound of the shower running upstairs echoed through the ceiling. I had maybe ten minutes before he came back down.

I punched in Vanessa's birthday.

The lock clicked green.

Stacks of client folders filled the front, but I ignored them. My fingers brushed against a thick manila envelope hidden beneath a leather-bound ledger.

I pulled it out and slapped it onto the desk.

Overseas Education Trust.

Three months ago, Adrian brought a single signature page to the kitchen table. He claimed he was locking away five hundred thousand dollars for Noah's college fund. He needed my signature to authorize the transfer from our joint savings.

I bypassed the dense legal jargon and flipped directly to Schedule A.

The beneficiary designation.

The printed name wasn't Noah.

Beneficiary: Lily Thorne. Age: 7.

Vanessa's daughter.

My husband took half a million dollars of my money and handed it to his mistress's child.

The trustee listed was a shell company registered in Delaware. It belonged to Vanessa's brother.

Adrian wasn't just cheating.

"Checking up on our investments?"

Adrian stood in the doorway. Water dripped from his wet hair onto the hardwood floor.

He closed the distance between us before I could slide the document back into the drawer.

Then, his features relaxed into a soft mask of affection.

"I know it looks strange," Adrian said. He stepped behind my chair and placed his hands on my shoulders.

I kept my palms flat on the desk, resisting the overwhelming urge to shove him away. "You put another child's name on our trust."

"It's a proxy structure for tax purposes," he murmured. "My accountant suggested using a third-party dependent to bypass the gift tax ceiling."

"A third-party dependent," I echoed. "Lily Thorne."

"She's my assistant's kid," Adrian explained effortlessly. "Vanessa offered to let us use her daughter's Social Security number for the paperwork. It saves us nearly eighty grand in federal taxes. I didn't want to bore you with the accounting details."

"You used your assistant's child to hide half a million dollars," I said, turning my head slightly to look at him. "Isn't that illegal?"

"It's a gray area," he chuckled dismissively. "But it's entirely safe. I have the reverse transfer documents already drafted. The money comes back to Noah the second he turns eighteen."

"Why didn't you tell me this before I signed it?" "You told me it was a direct trust for Noah."

"I didn't want to worry you with the IRS compliance issues," Adrian said. He moved to the side of the desk, leaning his hip against the wood. "You already stress so much about Noah's health. I handle the finances so you don't have to."

"Five hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money to park under someone else's name," I challenged.

"It's fully insured," Adrian insisted. "Trust me, Emma. I'm a wealth manager. I do this for my clients every single day."

"And Vanessa just agreed to this?" I asked. "She took on the tax liability for a massive trust fund out of the goodness of her heart?"

"I gave her a nice bonus at the end of the quarter to cover any inconvenience," Adrian replied smoothly. He leaned down and pressed his wet lips against my temple. "Everything I do is to protect our family's future, Emma."

He squeezed my shoulders, playing the role of the devoted provider flawlessly.

"I see," I replied. "That's very resourceful of you."

"I try," he smiled. He stepped away to grab his watch from the charging stand. "Put that away and come have some cake. Noah's waiting."

Adrian had left his phone sitting next to his computer monitor.

The screen lit up with a new text notification.

Vanessa: Tomorrow at 2 PM, bring Noah to sign the waiver.
