Chapter 4

"Give me that," Grant snapped. He snatched the paper right out of Noah's hands. The sharp motion crumpled the edges of the page.

"Dad, what does it mean?" Noah asked, his voice wavering.

Grant ignored the question. He shoved the crumpled paper into his leather briefcase and snapped the brass locks shut. Then, he whipped his phone out of his pocket. The camera lens pointed directly at my face. The red recording dot blinked on the screen.

"You are snooping through privileged attorney-client documents, Evelyn," Grant said. His voice sounded different now. It was artificially loud, measured. The voice of a victim.

"You left it in the public printer tray," I said, refusing to raise my volume. "Put the phone down."

"You are trespassing in my office and stealing legal files," Grant continued, panning the camera slightly to catch Bianca standing quietly by the sofa. "You are acting erratic. I am documenting this for my own safety."

"Safety?" I asked. "You were just coaching our son to lie to a judge."

"Stop yelling at me, Evelyn," Grant commanded, even though I was speaking at a normal volume. He angled the phone just enough to capture Noah standing nervously in the background. "You are terrifying Noah."

"Noah knows I am not yelling," I said. I looked at my son. "Right, buddy?"

Noah stared at the phone in Grant's hand. He chewed on his bottom lip, shrinking back against the doorframe.

"End the recording, Grant," I said.

"I think you need to leave," Grant replied, tapping the screen to stop the video. "Before you do something you regret."

Forty-eight hours later, the fluorescent lights of the county courthouse evaluation room hummed above us. The space smelled like floor wax and old coffee.

I slid an eight-by-ten glossy photograph across the scratched laminate table. It stopped right in front of Dr. Miller, the court-appointed child psychologist.

"I found this document in the open printer tray of my husband's office on Tuesday night," I said.

Dr. Miller adjusted her wire-rimmed glasses. She studied the photo of the script. "It appears to be a coaching document. With your son's name on it."

"It is," I confirmed. "My husband printed it."

Grant sat across from me, wearing a tailored navy wool suit. He shook his head slowly, adopting a mask of deep, exhausted sorrow. "Dr. Miller, my wife is struggling. She broke into my private workspace and photographed my attorney's theoretical strategy notes. She is deeply paranoid."

"The paper says 'repeat until natural' next to a line about me raising my voice," I pointed out. "That is not a theoretical strategy. That is a rehearsal script."

"Because you do raise your voice, Evelyn," Grant said softly. He looked at Dr. Miller, his expression earnest. "She loses control. I had to ask my legal team how to prepare our son for the reality of this divorce. I needed guidance on how to shield him from her anger."

"Shield him?" I asked. "You froze my bank accounts to force a settlement. You brought your mistress to the office."

Grant reached into his breast pocket. He placed his phone on the table.

"I did not want to do this," Grant murmured. "I hate doing this. But I have to protect Noah. Her outbursts are unpredictable."

He tapped the screen.

My own voice blasted from the tiny speaker, distorted and furious.

"Twenty-seven late-night rideshare charges! Eight hundred and sixty-four dollars at the Pearl Hotel!"

A loud, violent crash followed—the sound of the heavy mahogany picture frame I had slammed onto his glass desk earlier that night.

Grant paused the audio. Silence swallowed the small room.

Dr. Miller looked at me, her pen hovering over her yellow notepad. Her expression had shifted. The professional neutrality cracked, replaced by a flicker of genuine concern.

My chest tightened. He had recorded me. He had stood in his office, letting me discover his affair and his financial abuse, and he had secretly recorded my reaction to use as a weapon.

"That is a fifteen-second clip," I said.

"It is enough," Grant interrupted. "Noah hears this tone constantly. She screams. She throws heavy objects. It creates a highly toxic environment."

"I threw nothing," I said. "I placed a picture frame face down on a desk."

"It sounded like a strike," Dr. Miller noted, writing something down on her pad.

I pressed both of my palms flat against the cold laminate surface of the table. I refused to raise my voice. I refused to give him another soundbite.

"Dr. Miller," I said. "I request that you subpoena the full, unedited audio file from his device. You will hear a twenty-minute conversation where my husband admits to freezing our joint bank accounts. You will hear him discussing his hotel expenses with his subordinate. He provoked me, recorded a fraction of my response, and is presenting it out of context."

Grant crossed his arms. "She is deflecting. The issue here is her temper."

"The issue is your manipulation," I countered.

"Okay, let us pause here," Dr. Miller said. She held up a hand, effectively cutting off the argument. "I want to observe the family dynamics directly. I need to see how Noah responds to both of you in a neutral setting."

She turned her chair slightly.

Noah sat in the corner of the room on a small blue plastic chair. He gripped a green crayon in his fist, staring at a blank sheet of paper on a child-sized desk. He wore the same blue soccer jacket from Tuesday night.

"Noah, your mom is right here," Dr. Miller said, her voice gentle and encouraging. "Why don't you come show her what you are drawing?"

Noah did not move. He kept his eyes glued to the blank paper.

"It is okay, sweetie," I said. I stood up from my chair and took a step toward the corner. "I would love to see it."

I closed the distance between us. I reached my hand out to gently touch his shoulder.

Noah violently jerked backward.

The plastic legs of his chair scraped harshly against the linoleum floor. The screeching sound echoed off the cinderblock walls, sharp and grating. He curled his knees into his chest, pressing his back against the corner.

He did not look at me.

His wide, terrified eyes locked on Grant.

My fingers froze in the air, hovering just ten centimeters away from my son's trembling shoulder.

Noah stared at his father, his pale lips moving silently as he formed the exact words printed on the script.

I feel unsafe.
