Chapter 2

I shoved the frosted glass door open. It slammed against the rubber stopper with a sharp crack.

Grant spun around, dropping his hand from the back of the leather sofa. Bianca took a quick step away from him.

I walked straight to the glass conference table. I slapped the mahogany family portrait face down on the surface. The impact rattled the crystal water glasses left over from the morning board meeting.

"Say it again," I said.

Grant adjusted his silver tie, his face blank. "Evelyn. You are supposed to be downstairs with the PR team."

"I want you to repeat exactly what you just said about our son. Do it right now. In front of her."

Bianca crossed her arms. Her cherry-red lips pressed into a tight line. She did not look guilty. She looked inconvenienced.

"You are being hysterical," Grant said in the flat, patronizing tone he used for difficult investors. "Bianca and I were just discussing the contingency plans for the gala."

"Contingency plans," I repeated. "Is that what you call coaching an eleven-year-old to lie to a judge?"

Grant sighed. He walked over to his leather briefcase on the side chair. He popped the brass locks, reached inside, and pulled out a thick stack of stapled documents. He dropped them onto the glass table, right next to the overturned photo.

"Since you decided to eavesdrop instead of doing your job tonight, we can skip the formalities." He tapped the top page. "Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. And a notice of asset freeze on all our joint accounts. Effective as of three o'clock this afternoon."

I stared at the black text. The state seal glared back at me.

"You froze the accounts."

"You do not have an income, Evelyn," Grant stated. "You have not worked a day since Noah was born. I cannot risk you draining the capital we need for the IPO."

I pulled my phone from my pocket and opened the banking app. The screen loaded. The joint checking account read zero. The savings account read zero. The emergency fund read zero.

"You emptied everything," I said, looking up at him. "You left me with nothing to even buy him dinner tonight."

"That is how I protect my assets from a hostile party," Grant replied.

"That money came from my mother's house."

"And it grew because of my sweat," he shot back. "You have no business managing the risk associated with thirty-six percent of a tech company. You are emotional. You lack the temperament. The board agrees with me."

"The board does not own those shares. I do."

"Not for long," Bianca chimed in.

I turned my head and stared at her. She held her chin high, refusing to look away.

I raised my phone, opened the camera app, and held it over the documents. I snapped three photos. The flash bounced off the glossy paper. I made sure the date and time stamps printed by the court clerk in the top right corner were legible.

"What are you doing?" Grant took a step forward, reaching for my phone.

I stepped back, slipping the device into my blazer pocket. "Documenting your ambush. I am not signing anything tonight."

"You are making this harder than it needs to be," Grant warned. "If you fight me on this, you will lose. I have the lawyers. I have the resources."

"You have my money," I corrected.

"It is corporate money now." Grant leaned his hands on the table. "Walk away quietly, Evelyn. Take the settlement. If you try to drag this into court and ruin my company's reputation right before we go public, I will make sure you get nothing. Not the shares. Not the house."

"And Noah?"

"I told you. I control the narrative."

The main office door clicked open.

"Dad?"

We all froze.

Noah stood in the doorway. He wore his blue soccer uniform. Dirt stained his kneepads, and he clutched a gold-painted plastic trophy against his chest. His eyes darted between the three of us, landing on the tense posture of his father.

"Hey, buddy." Grant's voice shifted instantly. It turned warm. Paternal. "What are you doing up here? I thought the driver was taking you straight to the restaurant."

"We won," Noah mumbled. He held up the trophy.

But his gaze drifted past Grant. He stared at the papers scattered across the glass table. The bold heading on the second page sat right under the bright overhead lights.

Proposed Child Custody and Visitation Plan.

Noah took a step closer. His cleats squeaked on the hardwood floor. He looked at the paper, then at his father, then at me.

"Mom?" His voice cracked.

I moved toward him, reaching out. "Noah, sweetie, it is okay."

He flinched away from my hand.

My arm dropped to my side.

Noah looked up at Grant. His small fingers gripped the plastic trophy so tight his knuckles turned white.

"Dad said after tonight I can't go home with Mom?"

The question hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.

I looked at Grant. He did not look apologetic. He just looked annoyed that his timeline got interrupted.

"Noah, that is not true," I said. "You are always coming home with me."

"Dad said you don't have a house anymore," Noah whispered.

"I have a house. We have a house." I glared at Grant. "Tell him."

Grant adjusted his watch. "Noah, why don't you go wait in the car with the driver? The adults are talking."

"Tell him," I demanded, stepping between Grant and our son.

"Evelyn, lower your voice," Grant said. "You are scaring him."

"You told an eleven-year-old he was going to be homeless to gain leverage in a divorce settlement!"

"See?" Grant gestured to me, looking directly at Noah. "Mom is very stressed right now. She is yelling. This is why we talked about you staying with me for a while."

Noah stepped backward, bumping into the doorframe.

Before I could form another response, the sound of small wheels rolling over the carpet broke the silence.

Bianca stepped out of the private lounge. She dragged a sleek silver overnight bag behind her.

Noah frowned. He pointed at the shiny suitcase.

"Didn't your stuff already move into Dad's new house?"
