Chapter 2

"Where are the Q3 projections?" Robert's shadow fell over my plastic plate.

I looked up. He stood by the staff table, adjusting his silk tie. Just below his collar, a faint smudge of smeared red lipstick stained his skin. Not mine. I hadn't worn red lipstick in a decade.

"I asked you a question, Susan." He tapped the face of his expensive watch. "The auditors are coming Monday. I need those files."

I pulled the manila envelope from my purse and dropped it onto the cheap tablecloth. It landed with a hollow smack next to a stack of paper napkins.

He tore the flap open. His brow furrowed as he pulled out nothing but air. He shook the envelope upside down.

"It's empty. What is this?"

"My resignation," I said, my tone flat. "I am no longer your unpaid accountant."

He tossed the empty folder back onto the table, letting out a short, sharp laugh. "Are you really doing this right now? Throwing a tantrum because Leo gave Claire your chair?"

"I'm setting a boundary."

"You're embarrassing yourself," he muttered. He leaned in closer, dropping his voice so the kitchen staff wouldn't hear. "You live in a house I pay for. You drive a car I bought. You balance my books because it's the least you can do to contribute to this family."

I stared right at the lipstick smudge on his neck. "Not anymore."

Robert straightened up, his jaw tight. "Have the files on my desk by Monday morning. I don't have time for your games." He turned and walked back to the VIP section.

The drive home offered no silence. From the backseat of the SUV, Leo leaned forward, his voice buzzing with adrenaline.

"Aunt Claire said Stanford values extracurricular leadership over raw GPAs," Leo chattered, swiping through his phone. "She's going to introduce me to an admissions consultant next week. Did you know she actually went to an Ivy?"

"I'm aware," I replied.

"She says you have to spend money to make money," Leo continued. "She's already looking at summer programs in Europe for me."

I squeezed the steering wheel. My knuckles turned white.

A month ago, while sorting the mail, I had opened a bank statement addressed to Leo. It listed a college prep account. Balance: fifty thousand dollars. The co-signer wasn't Robert. It was Claire. They had set it up behind my back.

"Mom, are you even listening?" Leo asked. "Aunt Claire is setting up a campus tour for me this summer. She said she'd fly out with me if you and Dad are too busy."

"I'm not busy," I said.

"Well, she knows the admissions officers. You don't."

I swung the car into our driveway, hit the garage door opener, and pulled inside. I slammed my foot on the brake pedal. The tires screeched against the concrete floor.

Leo jerked forward against his seatbelt. "Jesus, Mom! Watch it!"

"Get out," I said, cutting the engine.

He rolled his eyes, shoving his phone into his pocket. "You're just mad because Aunt Claire actually knows how the real world works. She doesn't just sit at home all day."

He kicked the car door open and stormed into the house, leaving the door wide open behind him.

The next morning, the kitchen smelled of roasted beans. I stood by the island, sliding my passport, birth certificate, and social security card into my leather tote.

Robert walked in, knotting his tie. He ignored the packed bag on the counter.

"Pour my coffee," he said, tapping his knuckles against the granite. "I have a nine o'clock meeting with the board."

I zipped my bag shut. I picked up the glass carafe from the machine. The dark liquid steamed in the cool morning air.

I carried it to the sink.

"Make it quick, Susan, I'm already running late."

I tipped the carafe. The hot coffee splashed against the stainless steel basin, swirling down the drain in a dark, muddy vortex.

Robert froze. His hands dropped from his tie. "What the hell are you doing?"

"I don't work for you."

"Are you insane?" he shouted, taking a step toward me. "I asked for one simple thing!"

I took his favorite ceramic mug, scooped a spoonful of wet, used grounds from the filter, and dumped them inside. I slid the filthy cup across the counter. It stopped right in front of his fingers.

"Make it yourself," I said.

"You're going to regret this attitude, Susan," he warned, his voice turning cold. "You have no idea how good you have it here."

I snagged my keys from the hook and walked out the front door.

The administrative wing of Oakridge Academy hummed with the sound of ringing phones and shuffling papers. I bypassed the main desk and headed straight for the counseling offices.

A tall man with graying temples stood by the filing cabinets. He wore a faded tweed jacket and held a thick manila folder. The brass nameplate on his desk read: *David Miller, Senior Counselor*.

"Mrs. Hale?" he asked, turning around. His eyes carried the quiet weariness of a man who had learned to live with loss. A school profile had once mentioned that his wife died several years earlier.

"Yes," I said, taking the seat across from his desk. "I'm here to review Leo's transcripts for the upcoming term. I want to make sure his applications are on track."

David sat down, opening the folder. He flipped past the report cards and standardized test scores, stopping at a bright yellow registration form.

He frowned, tracing a line on the paper with his index finger.

"Is there a problem with his grades?" I asked, leaning forward.

"No, his academics are fine," David replied. He tapped his pen against the desk, his expression tightening. "But there is an administrative issue."

He turned the folder around and pushed it across the polished wood toward me.

He pointed to the bottom right corner of the page.

"Mrs. Hale," David said, his voice dropping to a serious, hushed tone. "Leo's emergency contact was modified yesterday afternoon. The primary slot was changed to a woman named Claire."

I stared at the ink. The signature on the authorization line belonged to my husband.

David met my gaze. "Did you authorize this?"
