Chapter 3

I pressed record.

Small button on the side of my phone, one I'd used maybe twice in my life. My thumb found it without thinking.

Then I turned around.

Julian was still standing where I'd left him, hand at Clara's back, his expression arranged into something between grief and inconvenience. I crossed the room in four steps and pressed the death notice flat against his chest. Not handed it — pressed it, palm down, hard enough that he had to grab it or let it drop to the floor.

He grabbed it.

"Evelyn." He dropped into that register — the one for housekeeping staff, junior associates, anyone who needed to be reminded of their position. "You need to calm down."

"I am calm."

"You just lost—" He paused, recalibrated. "This has been a traumatic night. For all of us."

Clara produced the soft sound behind him. Practiced. Perfectly timed.

"The hospital will want you to sign a release form," Julian continued. "Standard procedure. No-fault acknowledgment, protects everyone including you." He folded the death notice once, precisely, and tucked it into his breast pocket like a business card. "I've already spoken to the administrator. Sign tonight, and we handle this quietly. No investigation, no press, nothing that complicates—"

"Your promotion."

He blinked.

"That's the part you left out," I said. "An investigation into Noah's death gets inconvenient for your board appointment timeline."

"That's not—"

"You're up for appointment in six weeks." My voice stayed level. I was watching his face the way you watch a road in bad weather — looking for the moment it stops being navigable. "A negligence inquiry attached to your name right now is a problem. That's why you want the release form. Not for me. For the board seat."

Something shifted behind his eyes. Not guilt. Something colder than guilt.

"Sign the form, Evelyn."

"No."

"Sign it, or I will make the next six months of your life—"

I reached past him.

The medical waste bin was mounted to the wall beside the supply cart — yellow biohazard lid, steel bandage scissors on a hook. Blunt-nosed, heavy, built for cutting gauze. I took them.

Julian watched with the stillness of a man who cannot quite believe what he's seeing.

His jacket was Brioni, custom-fitted, with double-breasted buttons he'd had made specially — small matte-gold discs with the Sterling family crest pressed into each face. Forty dollars apiece, he'd told me once. He'd said it the way people say numbers they want to impress you with.

I cut the top button off in a single clean snip.

It hit the tile floor. *Tink.* A small, precise sound, almost polite.

Julian's hand shot to my wrist. "What the hell are you—"

"Your lawyers will be hearing from mine." I looked down at his hand. The same wrist he'd bound two hours ago. The skin was still raw, the leather marks still visible. "You might want to let go."

He let go.

The button caught the fluorescent light from the floor between us. Such a small, expensive, stupid thing.

"You're out of your mind," he said. "You're grieving and hysterical and you're going to regret everything you've done tonight."

"Maybe." I set the scissors down on the cart, blade-side down, deliberate. "But you'll regret more."

Clara moved.

A sharp intake of breath — slightly too loud, slightly too timed. Then she swayed, and Julian turned, and she went down sideways, her shoulder catching the supply cart's edge on the way. Her bag hit the floor. The contents scattered. Lip gloss. A compact. Her phone, face-down.

And a folded piece of paper that slid out from between two other documents and came to rest against the toe of my shoe.

I looked down.

The header was printed in the clinical font of a medical laboratory. *OB/GYN Associates. Patient: Clara Voss.*

Below that, a date. Below that, a single measurement.

*12 weeks, 3 days.*

The room was very quiet.

Julian was crouched over Clara, one hand on her shoulder, calling her name. He hadn't seen it yet.

I stared at that paper for a long moment. The date. The measurement. The name.

Then I crouched down and picked it up.

Because Julian straightening up and seeing it in my hand was not an accident I was willing to let happen. I needed to know what this was before he got to explain it away. I folded it once and slid it into my coat pocket.

Behind me, the fluorescent lights hummed. Noah lay still beneath his white sheet. Clara was stirring on the floor, and Julian was bending over her with both hands, solicitous, practiced, a man performing the role of protector for the second time tonight with the same ease he'd performed the role of grieving father.

My phone buzzed.

A text from Hargrove: *Filings submitted. Board notified. Vance Medical shares transferring to your name at open tomorrow.*

I looked at the text. Then I looked at the paper in my pocket.

Clara Voss, twelve weeks along. My husband's child, presumably. The reason he hadn't answered nineteen calls while our son was bleeding.

I put the phone away and walked toward the door.

Julian heard my heels and looked up. "Where are you going?"

"Out." I didn't stop walking.

"Evelyn, we need to talk about—"

"We're done talking."

I pushed through the door and the corridor swallowed me, cold and white and fluorescent, and I kept walking, and my coat pocket held a folded paper that was either a motive or a weapon or both, and I was already deciding which of those it would be — and exactly when, and exactly where, I would use it.
